Georgetown is wicked! The Rodeo was in town & we spent Sunday there from around 9am. We initially looked at skipping Georgetown so we could spend an extra day in this area (Karumba) but I am so glad we didn’t. I had the time of my life, grabbing photos of riders, talking to locals & indulging in 20 VB cans or so. Due to the lack of good beer up here & my reduced budget I have moved over to VB as everything else in the cheap skate price range has no taste. We saw all of the event types & the kids & us had the greatest time. In the arvo the girls took the kids to the local pool & the boys stayed to watch the arvo card which was barrel racing & the ... read more

At Sunset Caravan Park, Karumba, where the Outback meets the sea. Famous in Australia for prawns and barramundi. Today we got up “early” and biked into town about 8kms each way. Wanted to have a coffee at the Hot Bread Shop, but they didn’t have any milk. Bought a couple of very nice pies and rode home. Mucked around. One of Karumba’s unusual features is that it usually only has one tide each day. Apparently the land configuration in the Gulf of Carpentaria is such that every second high tide is cancelled out. Tides range from about 1.4m to about 3m. Next day teamed up with Peter & Leigh Purches from Sydney and we drove back to Normanton to ride on the local train. Its run a diesel railcar since the 1920’s and runs as an ... read more

Boulia used to be a major town in the days of sheep, but is fading away as the area has dried out and shifted to cattle. Cattle are much less labour intensive and the advent of the huge stock trucks (capacity of 120 animals) means that there is no infrastructure need, either. 3 May 2011 First we played 9 holes of golf, artificial tees, sand greens and fairways. The fairways were only cracked red mud and bindy grass. Then we loaded up and headed to Mt Isa. This was 301km, our longest tow to date. We had thought of stopping at Dajarra, but were advised not to! When we got there, a local advised there were 200 people living there, 10 of them white. The area looked like it with piles of rubbish everywhere. When ... read more

Lawn Hill and Karumba In the last entry we left you at a free camp called Wonarah Bore, just east of Barkly homestead. We camped there rather than the homestead (which is more of a motel/roadhouse) as on our last trip through here in 2008, we swore that we saw Ned Kelly standing by the fuel pumps, and had no intention of filling his pockets with our hard earned! It was the best of an ordinary lot en route to Mt.Isa. Mt. Isa was not on our itinerary, but we had time to kill before arriving at the Lawn Hill National park which we had booked (and postponed) whilst in Melbourne. So we decided that there was no real alternative but to stop over there. We did find a far better caravan park than we had ... read more

Day 110 - Chasing the sunset at Karumba Just a quick birthday shout out to Sarah (Kowalik) at Tradeteam. Hope you have a great day chick. Thanks for the facebook message, great to hear from you. We both slept pretty well last night, one spate of dog barking but that was it. At first light Dar went off for a shower and I buried my head back in the blogs trying to catch up! When we’re doing so much in the day and early evening there’s obviously less time to write it all but we want to keep doing it so we don’t forget what we’ve seen on this amazing adventure. The fact that anyone else is reading it is rewarding and uplifting bonus so do please carry on! In fact, whilst we’re out here if ... read more

In Normanton we went to the Railway Station. There were some Brolgas outside that were fed every afternoon with some bread. I liked them. In Karumba I got a sunnyboy. There was not much to do so, when we did what we had to do, we left. After a long time, we came to Dunbar Station. In this station people were branding the cows so they wouldn’t get lost. We camped at Mitchell River you could not get across because there was no ford in the water. If you tried to get across and you got stuck it was $500 to get towed out. As well there was “salty’s” (salt water crocodiles) in the water. ... read more

Hi everyone We are back in communication again! after Sapphire we headed west. We had an overnight stop at Barcaldine Show grounds (over 200 powered sites ), then stopped at Ilfracombe and walked and looked at the Machinery Mile - lots of old graders, tractors, trucks and other machinery. Graeme and Rick would have loved it!! Then on to Longreach, where we stayed for 3 nights. We did the tourist attractions there, including the sunset cruise on the River Thomson (reminded us of the cruise at Inaminka), Qantas Museum, Stockman's hall of Fame and even a Cobb and Co stagecoach ride out into the countryside. We also visited the School of the Air. From Longreach we drove on, north west to Winton, where we were entertained in the campground to a great country singer who had ... read more

Hello everyone! Well, I managed to get 4 days off (horray!) from work to come to Karumba with Sheridan, who I work with, for her 22nd birthday! ...she said I looked like I needed the break from work haha So anyway, we arrived here on Friday at about 1, checked into the 'gone fishing motel' which is opposite the sunset tavern and on the beach. Its so beautiful here and the beach is lovely but were not allowed in the sea becuase there are too many sharks and crocs! So we spent most of friday afternoon drinking Kaluhula and milk and sitting in the spa (which was rather nice). I managed to amuse Sheridan by nearly getting myself in on a four day fishing trip... I was simply being friendly and walking out of the shop ... read more

Hello Again Well we have moved out of the Outback now and have moved to the coast. We both commented that we are really water people. We have loved the outback experience and it got better as we moved along although Cloncurry still rates very poorly on our list. We have covered close to 6000 km now and are doing between 300 km and 500 km on our 'transfers'. A very manageable thing. Rhonda is going well with her 'disability'. The pins protrude from the skin so they catch easily and that gives her 'larry doo'! What I haven't mentioned is that she hurt her ribs an the right side. They give her a lot of grief and it seems that perhaps there is a crack in there. Still, she's a soldier and keeps taking up ... read more

After the rigours of the Cape we completely spoiled ourselves on our anniversary by checking in to our original honeymoon spot at Crater Lakes Rainforest Cottages in the Cairns Highlands. A more idyllic place you’ll struggle to find and it never fails to get me extra brownie points as Debbie has totally fallen in love with the place to the extent that she’s sworn to buy it if it ever comes on the market. Its the kind of spot where the most taxing thing you’ll do all day is pour yourselves a double spa bath, pop open a bottle of champagne, and enjoy some bubbles in the bubbles. Afterwards you’ll lounge on the sofa in front of the open fire, after which, well, you might just fancy another spa bath if you’ve brought some more bubbly, ... read more
