Caught up with friends and family. Boys went fishing at the Calliope River and at last they caught something, well Emerson did. Bev and Lester shared some pointers about traveling… apparently it’s going to be hot in Darwin!! Bev stocked our kitchen with fresh fruit and veg from their garden and homemade pickles and jams. Lester kitted up the car with the biggest mud flap I’ve ever seen. The car looks real tuff now. We took their advice and the recliner chair did stay at Gladstone and we bought more practical chairs. Sunday afternoon at the caravan park Emerson felt quite at home sitting with the grey nomads listening to some golden oldies live music. Bless him! ... read more

Hi all We are now heading north again up the coast towards Cairns. After getting the van serviced at Caboolture, we spent 3 nights at Mudjimba, on the Sunshine Coast. It was good to catch up again with Jan and Rowan, and Chris and Kurt, but the weather was mostly drizzle and rain. It's the first time we've had to hook up in pouring rain in almost 2 years of travelling. Chris had to change his clothes before we drove off as he got so wet, even with a jacket on. Jan and Rowan decided to come with us (with their van), and we headed off to Hervey Bay for 2 nights in a council caravan park on the beachfront. Unfortunately, the birds had found it too - thousands of rainbow lorrikeets came in each afternoon, ... read more

Greetings from across the globe! We landed safe and sound at dawn this morning after a 14 hour flight to brisbane. I think it is Wed July 1st, which means we leap-frogged Tuesday. We spent the day driving up inland of the coast toward the Great Barrier Reef. Very beautiful countyside with brilliant sunshine and hills and forest. It's hot here! Winter my foot. We have stopped for the night in a town called Gladstone, which leaves us about a five or six hour drive tomorrow morning. It's a little scary driving on the left side, but we've managed so far. Also the metric system causes unnecessary math, which Megan actually enjoys which is even more unnecessary. Oh and Burger King is called Hungry Jack. The best part of the driving is when we try to ... read more

Thursday April 9th/Friday April 10th- After turning in a paper on Thursday afternoon I packed for Heron island and what would become the first part of the best trip and 10 days I could ever imagine. I packed pretty light for the trip figuring there certainly wouldn’t be very much besides the Heron Island Research Station and the resort on the island. At 1130pm Seth and I headed from King’s to the main bus stop on campus to catch the bus which would take us to Gladstone (where the ferry is to go to Heron). The bus ride was complete misery. It gave me flashbacks to the Greyhound bus ride to St. Louis for a hockey tournament after my senior year of HS. The bus was cramped and the seats didn’t recline. To top it off ... read more

Days 31=34 (+ probably a few weather days) Elliot Heads (35 miles), South of Baffle Creek (39 miles), Agnes Water (n of) (31 miles), Gladstone (50 miles) Cyclone ' Hamish ' is closing on land south of Cairns. Though I'm well south (in Gladstone), I think I'll wait out the winds and rain from it (rather strong), will probably be here a few days - as the weather isn't supposed to get here until tomorrow (and I don't want to be paddling in the Shoalwater Bay area when it does get here. On my last trip (in '06), Cyclone 'Larry' ('Hamish' is being compared to it) had me pinned down in Mackay a few days. I've been seeing quite a few sea turtles - but they spook easily (just as the camera is ready to shoot). ... read more

My final day in "Brisvegas" was a very satisfying sort-out day, which sounds dull, but if you know me well, you'll know the pleasure I get from sorting things out, writing lists etc. I went to see Slumdog Millionaire - great film, and good way to escape the humidity for a couple of hours. I also took a ride on the Citycat ferry and ran into Martha and Laurent (who I'd met, by design, in Sydney). The next day, I left a rainy Brisbane, heading for Noosa, where I spent a fairly uneventful couple of days. It was really too hot to do anything much - and actually it was Australia Day when I was there, so the town and beach was FULL of schoolkids enjoying their last day of freedom before term started again the ... read more

Day 211: Monday 26th January - Australia Day spent watching turtles nesting on the beach I kindly get a lift down to the marina in Gladstone where I’ve got an hour to kill before my boat transfer departs for Heron Island. I spend it getting breakfast - probably the most expensive beans on toast I’ve ever had at $8.50 (4 pounds)! The catamaran journey across to Heron Island is equally as expensive at $232 (110 pounds) for a return. Half way through and with choppy seas I’m feeling a little green so find it best to take a snooze before we arrive at Heron Island at 2pm local time (it being an hour ahead of Queensland). Heron Island was found in 1843 and named after the abundant reef herons here. If it was to be discovered ... read more

13th February 2008 The big storm has now passed but we are still having frequent showers. However, 30 degree rain showers do not seem too bad, they just cool you down a bit. There has been some flooding in the area and we saw some evidence of the floods where there was mud from the fields across the road. The first hundred metres of the sea is also turning a red colour as the earth from the land is washed into the sea by the small estuary near the campsite. We got up early today at 5-30am and after a cup of tea strolled up the beach. The public are not allowed onto the beach until after 6.00am when all turtle activity has finished. We could see the tracks of the Logerhead Turtles going up the ... read more
