Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hello everyone We had a fantastic trip to see Ayers Rock which was more impressive than I thought it would be. We went with Mulga Tours which is part of Annies hostal where we stayed in Alice Springs. It was the cheapest we could find & I highly recommend them. Highly professional & efficient. There were 2 mini buses full of guests & we were looked after by Scooter & Fiona. It was a long drive, but well worth it. We had several rest stops along the way, including visiting a camel farm where some of the girls on our trip [View Full Entry]

As is the same since the start of this trip it’s another 5.15 am start getting use to it by now. Have a new guide for this trip that happens to love country music so its Aussie country music for the next 3 days. Stop[ first to jump on a camel ride and then drive further to see the Olga's which are pretty cool, before we see Uluru at sunset. The rock is absolutely huge, looks fake looking at it from a distance as if it's a cardboard cut out. Head for the camp site where it’s more swags and camp [View Full Entry]

1 Day stop in Ayers Rock 1st Day : Kata Tjuta Sunset & Outback Australian BBQ The first day we spent in Ayes Rock we went to the Olga's (or Kata Tjuta) in order to walk in one of the gorges and to see the sunset on this 36 rocks group from a viewpoint. We did this while drinking sparkling wine and eating wattleseeds dippings. It was fabulous. During the evening, we had an Outback Australian BBQ and were able to taste Crocodile, Kangaroos & Emu and cook it ourselves ! Very nice ! The croco has the hardness of calmard [View Full Entry]

16-18 March Over the Easter Break we went to Uluru and The Olgas with Alison. Both Rob and I had been several years ago and I forgot how red everything is in the centre of Australia. From the plane all you could see was red earth! When we first landed we checked into our place which was a two bedroom apartment. It was so hot we just went straight for the pool. That evening we went to watch the sunset. A quick burst of rain came through just before the sunset so as we were driving up there was a rainbow [View Full Entry]

We actually had a really good time and can appreaciate that it is much more than just a big rock. Although it is a very big rock.
We arrived in Alice Springs on the 6th after a 5 hour stop over in Perth airport. Alice Springs is a funny little town, it's much bigger than you'd think for a town in the middle of the outback, but seems deserted all the time! It's really sunny and hot in the day, but freezing in the night. We stayed in a caravan at a hostel, so it seemed a lot colder than it probably was. We did a 3 day tour to Ayres Rock (Uluru to give it its proper name), the Olgas and King's Canyon. This was absolutely brilliant. [View Full Entry]

We got on our plane in Tahiti on March 25th...but we arrived in Sydney Australia on March 27...we missed a whole day while in the air! Sydney, Australia is a wonderful city, and everybody spoke ENGLISH!!!!! You just have no idea how much you feel comforted by the sound of English until you are without it for a few weeks. We got off the plane, cruised through customs (they were ripping everyone else's stuff apart, so we got very lucky!) and headed over to the bank of phone with hotels and backpacker lodgings. (BTW: for travelers, there are two banks of [View Full Entry]

The Dingo...
Ayers Rock at sunset

Today was an early morning. We had a 5 AM breakfast, and then headed off for a sunrise hike around the base of Uluru. However, the weather was even worse than the night before, and we proceeded to be rained on for the entire 9 k hike. yuck! The bad weather did have some upsides; it meant that there were virtually no tourists besides ourselves walking around the base, and it also meant that there were waterfalls flowing off the rock. We are now officially part of the <1% of Uluru visitors who see waterfalls and rain (on the ride out, [View Full Entry]

Getting up at 5am is not the best when our room was next to the bar and it was very loud until quite late. Dragging our sorry backsides up we headed off for our free breakfast in the hostel. The kitchen was very busy as there were alot of people disembarking on tours that morning. There was one toaster with only two slots working and 3 mugs which were taken so it was not really the best start to the day. Still once we had woken up we were both quite excited about heading off to Uluru. I have always wanted [View Full Entry]

Wonderful Uluru

We arrived into Ayers Rock this morning, and when we first saw it, Mel's intellectual comment about one of the amazing natural wonders of the world was "It's just a big bloody rock", glad to know I am travelling with someone who appreciates natural beauty... HAHA We got to the resort, and were immediately attacked by about a million flies... It was really hot. We did a bit of shopping, and got some lunch from the supermarket. Mel says "Family and Andrew, I have bought you some presents, any ideas on what to get Nanna?" We were picked up by our [View Full Entry]
