Welcome to clean toilets (with toilet paper!!!!!), friendly people and hot showers (first one in 4 months!!!). After waiting to leave Indonesia for so long we finally arrived in Australia & immediately loved it. Ayers Rock was amazing, we didn't climb it out of respect: the aboriginal people view it as sacred & request that you don't. We also visited The Olgas, which were equally as awe inspiring, & King's Cannyon.....all were truly magnificent but we were plagued by the thousands of flies! ... read more

Today we had the option of climbing Uluru or walking around it. There are signs everywhere strenuously requesting that you don't climb the rock (it's a bit offensive to stomp all over what the aboriginals consider a sacred object) and yet a steady stream of tourists can be seen moving up and down. It's actually quite a dangerous climb, a woman died yesterday and they landed a helicopter on the rock to collect her. That was also a deterent. In addition, you can see a visible scar up the side where everyone climbs which is kind of sad. Jesse and I didn't climb. Instead we walked around the base with Paul and Clo who we met on our tour. The walk is 10km but completely flat. Uluru looks like a completely different rock from every angle. ... read more

I considered today to be my real birthday since it's the 25th at home. We were up at 4:30am in order to watch the sun rise behind Uluru (Ayers Rock). It was stunning!! After that we did a long hike around Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) which was much easier than the King's Canyon walk but equally impressive. We also drove around Uluru and looked at some Aboriginal rock paintings and heard some Aboriginal stories and learned a bit about what the rock means to them and how they used it. (There are still aboriginals living near the rock but they no longer go there because of all the tourists.) In the cultural centre there is a book of letters from people all around the world who have taken rocks from Uluru and then mailed them back ... read more

After passing the Breakaways Rach, the two Irish John's, and Uver (he;'s german) and i switched busses and headed to Uluru. We camped in swags, think an candy wrapper made of canvass that you put your sleepig bag in and become a cocoon to avoid the frigid desert nights. At 5 am we got up to see Sunrise then hike uluru. Only Rachel and 2 japanese girls from our bus violated the wishes of the native owners to not climb uluru. So they when up, while the rest of us went around the base. Uluru is huge (which is why it is famous) and all red sandstone. The stone looks so different in the light and from angles. At points it almost looks like cloth, it has that drapery look to it. It is so beautiful. ... read more

25/05/04 Well well, 2days ago, I made history for myself as I finally left Alice Springs after three fantastic months. We left The Alice at 5:15am and made our way to Kings Canyon. The views were amazing. Andrew, our tour guide, is fantastic. Throughout the past three days he has tought me so much about the Aborigies spiritual belives and customs that is has inspired me to write a book when I finally return home (God forbid) I want his job!!! The next day, after spending the night in a swag whilst it was raining, we set of early from our campsite to see Uluru and The Kata Tjuta. We did a two hour base walk in 1 1/2/hours, had cake and set off to see how the Amangu tribe survived here before we came along ... read more

My watch alarm was set for 5am, yes five in the morning. After a heavy night, that’s all we wanted. Anyway, they were aiming to the bush camp by about 6am, which left an hour to get dressed, have breakfast and dismantle our lovely tent. There were some tired eyes I can tell you that morning. Some of the others were already up, dressed and having breakfast. Anyway, I stumbled out of the tent and got dressed. I was up earlier than most people, solely because I wanted to make sure I had the chance to get dressed properly. I didn’t fancy having a shower there as it didn’t look to clean. Once dressed and packed I left my bag by the coach on the tarpaulin, and got some breakfast: some bran-type cereal and a mug ... read more

I just had a great day in the Australian Outback. It all started at 4:55am with my early morning shower. I misjudged the Rock yesterday. Arriving before dawn was one of the greatest experiences and I cannot say that I have many like it. It rises out of the pre-dawn murk, like some timeless wonder. And as you walk around it you actually feel this elemental power. You feel the wind. You smell the red dirt. And you hear the sway of the bush grass as the outback wind whips through. The Aboriginal owners urge you not to climb it. That is not what this place is about. Rather, they urge you to listen to the story it has to tell. Today was full of truly unique experiences for me. With the red Rock rising ... read more

It's Monday night and I'm lying on a stretcher near Uluru. The stars are so clear in the desert sky. At first today I was just bumming about how this tour wasn't like the Kakadu dreams tour and how all the same people weren't hear. But then I realized. HEY FOOL YOU'RE IN THE OUTBACK IN AUSTRALIA. Snap out of it. This is where you have wanted to be for ages. I shouldn't get down about what wasn't, but rather should be stoked about what was. Ayers Rock was just as I suspected. It was a rock. It was there and nice to look at, but Bill Bryson blew out of proportion in his book. Tomorrow we wake up ridiculously early for an early morning walk around it. Note: The Aussie Diaries are a XX part ... read more

After a bit of a delay in Cairns due to mechanical problems, my flight to Ayers Rock got underway around 9:15 am, and after about 2 hours of flight, and a 30 minute time change (yeah, in Australia they have 30 min. time zone differences) we landed safely in the resort town of Ayers Rock, about 15 km outisde of the National Park. Ayers Rock resort is the only "town" in the center of Australia, and has only one purpose: allow visitors to be close to the Rock and the Olgas and enjoy the magic outback of the red center first hand. The only other access point to the Rock is Alice Springs, about 400 km to the northeast of here. The resort is actually quite amazing... all the land here is owned by the Aboriginals, ... read more
