Time to head home. We’ve had a great holiday, but it’s really not the best time to take a holiday with so many other people taking time off around Christmas and New Year and, of course, the school holidays. Everything is more crowded and more expensive than it would be at a less popular time of year. It has been great though with the birthday party providing the catalyst to spend NYE in Sydney. We have long talked about witnessing the Sydney fireworks firsthand just once in our lives but, until now, have not made it happen. With a celebration on in northern NSW on the 6th of Jan it provided the perfect opportunity to turn it into a road trip and do the fireworks and then continue north to the birthday party. We were up ... read more

Well here we are in Yass a country town about 50ks from Canberra but to get here we had to travel through some beautiful grain growing country. We left Cobar and headed for Dubbo City famous for it's zoo and historic jail.We stayed at a C/P just out of town, having heard that the parks in town were the subject of thefts from caravans and cars.We found the town clean and well spaced out, saw a couple of the other C/P's one having a barbed wire perimeter(which we later stayed at).As usual we visited the tourist information and loaded up with local information and wandered around the main street and town. The famous Dubbo jail is on the high street being, built in 1847 as a court house lock up, later upgraded to a jail in 1859 it ... read more

Thursday 27th October – today, with the weather fairly pleasant, we decided to spend some more time in and around Yass. So after a fairly casual start we went to the Information Centre to gather some details on a place called Wee Jasper. It’s about 50 kilometers out of Yass through very rural, farming country and Caroline and Andy had recommended it last night. Armed with a picnic and a flask, we set off at about 11:00am and just meandered slowly through the beautiful, undulating countryside. We almost ran over a snake which seemed to be basking in the midday sun but we knew we had missed it as, when we reversed to take a photo, it slithered off into the long grass. Occasionally a view of a lake was visible which supported our mistaken view ... read more

Monday 24th dawned after a pretty comfortable night. The Colour City Caravan Park had proved to be a little “gem” and, in terms of value for money, is one of the best parks we’ve stayed on. We didn’t have a lot to do to get ready to move on but, because of my very late night, what with the rugby and the Skype chat, I chose to have a morning shower. This made our departure time a little later than it might have been but it didn’t matter too much as we had a choice of two places to stay tonight depending on what sort of progress we made. We battled through the rush-hour traffic – a pretty unusual phenomenon for us – but it gave us another chance to appreciate the city centre. Wherever we ... read more

Here we are in Fingal Bay! Fingal Bay is part of Port Stephens on the central coast of NSW & our Dad’s Uncle Ross lives here. We are staying at his house from Wednesday until Saturday. Today Uncle Ross showed us all around the place, including places like Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay & an old lighthouse. There is also a Coastal Rescue station at the lighthouse & Nathan got to go up & talk to the rescue crew & watch them work. There was also a museum there about Nelson Bay & all the things that happened here over the years. This included the ship ‘Lady Nelson’ which is now docked at Hobart! Yesterday, Uncle Ross took us to his work at Williamtown Airforce Base. He works on the F-18 Hornets & Hawk 127 Lead In ... read more

Today we left Mark & Maria’s in Echuca on the way to Yass for a night in a cabin (I thought this was meant to be a camping trip?). It was a good night last night, with pizza ready for us on arrival at around 6pm. It was a funny drive up from Melbourne to Echuca yesterday. Phil, Kathleen & Jen were leading the way when they pulled off the freeway to head toward Echuca. We were a car or two behind & went to pull into the slip lane when the yobbo in the Common-dore behind us decided to speed up & take our spot in the slip lane. I slowed down. He slowed down. Then the opportunity was past, so the Peterson’s in the Maverick headed up the freeway for 10 odd kilometres before ... read more
