So i have been in Australia for a little over a week now. And already met so many people and did some pretty exciting things. I had not much time to update my blog, and even now i have to hurry because we are going to drink a few beers tonight. After the first 3 days settling in i decided to move to another hostel, in another part of Sydney called Manly. Its a little bit bigger then where i stayed the first 3 nights, and there are more clubs. That night people from the first hostel called me and asked if i wanted to join a beach barbecue, and it was close to my new hostel. So i joined, and it was an amazing experience to have a BBQ on the beach. Though the new ... read more

One of my first overseas trips was to Vietnam, in December 1996. Like much of my travel, it was a somewhat random decision and I hadn't done much in the way of research beforehand. So I was open to lots of advice. As it turns out, all the advice I received was from people who had never been there, but all assured me confidently that I was bound to get ill, it's too hot, and I would most certainly lose lots of weight. I could almost guarantee coming back slimmer and trimmer. As it turns out this was absolute nonsense. The food was sensational, like nothing I'd had before. Bursting with flavour, it was fresh, delicious, not to mention more-ish, and not wanting to miss out on the incredible array of new culinary delights I tucked ... read more

Together with some friends, we did some more exploring of the Sydney suburb of Cabramatta, which is home to the largest Vietnamese community in Sydney. Cabramatta is located about 30kms south-west of the Sydney CBD. The primary reason for our return visit to Cabramatta was to show our friends Chung and Ha around as they were keen to see the area they had been told about back in Vietnam. We met them at Cabramatta railway station and took a walk past the Friendship Arch, which is located in the Freedom Plaza. We then headed to a shopping arcade where Terence knew of a good eatery run by a friend’s family. We shared a nice lunch, with a variety of foods and did lots of people watching, as shoppers busied themselves looking at the fruit and vegetables ... read more

Lorenza and I have been a bit house bound of late, so this morning we decided to get and do something other than stick around home. We made a quick list of the ingredients for a Vietnamese dish we wanted to try cooking called "Bun Bo Xao" ... wok fried beef salad with vermicelli noodles, plus Nuoc Cham sauce (fish sauce, chilli, garlic and lemon juice). With our shopping list in hand we took the one hour drive to Vietnam (well the nearest thing to it - the Sydney suburb of Cabramatta). Our first stop was Pho 54 for some lunch. We enjoyed a Saigon style beef pho and watched the sky outside turning very black. Once our meal was done the sky opened up and dumped a torrent of rain down. It was such a ... read more
