The plan - To ride my W650 Motorbike from Thirroul NSW to Melbourne via the Snowy Mtns over 3 days - board the Spirit Of Tasmania and spend 5 days with my sister and her family in Wynyard - return by boat to Melbourne, then ride home over a different route via Rutherglen ....... Day one didn't start too well. First of all I suprised myself by waking up early. By 7am I had just finished loading my gear onto the bike, clad myself head to toe in wet weather gear and went to roll the 200kgs of loaded bike off the centre stand to see it fall flat on its side. It seems waking too early has its drawbacks - lack of common sense - I should have been sitting on the bike to do ... read more

One week before we set off on our long-awaited journey overseas, we enjoyed an 8-day adventure in the Snowy Mountains with my (Hero's) mother, Deborah, good friend Kirsty and her son Ethan... and it was a beautiful way to say au revoir to our gorgeous home country. Throughout our time in the Snowy Mountains, we had two magnificent days of fresh snow that provided a wonderful (and fast) foundation for our toboggans to race across, and a much-cherished source of hydration for us all. I don't think anything tastes better than fresh snow... especially when it is topped with maple syrup! Well well, after 3 and a bit months in Melbourne it was time to leave and it almost felt as if we were leaving home. We had a going away night on Monday at a pub called Pugg Mahones which is a usual monday place to go with the hostel. It was really good, but sad that we would never see any of the buggers in there again. Anyway we rented the same car that we got for the Great Ocean Road and hired it for 3 days to make the 8 hour drive to Sydney. I think that the time was probably meant for people who were taking a direct route... we managed to drive for about 25 hours because we stopped off practically everywhere on the way. On the way out of Melbourne we ... read more

It had been planned for a while, so we were not to be put off from our quest to climb Mount Kosiosko - Australia's highest mountain - by the torrential rain. We met our fellow explorers early on Saturday morning, and told ourselves that the weather could only get better. It didn't, but having driven all that way, we decided we might as well as least take the chair lift from Thredbo and 'have a look'. The chair lift was wet and cold, and we decided we'd walk just to the look-out. And anyway - wasn't the rain easing a little? At the look out (from which we could see precisely nothing!), we decided to go 'just a little further'. To cut a long story short, we made it to the summit, on probably the ... read more

The begining is always a logical place to start. Seen as we have not had many visitors to Tumut, here's an update. It is a small country town of somewhere between 7,000-11,000 people. Jake and I are right into our innercity living, so are in the CBD, a 4 minute walk from our desks @ work. It is at least a 10 minute walk until you are close enough to the countryside to see cows and suchlike. It is hot and it is cold....in the past 2 weeks we have suddenly had to cope with temperatures ranging between 30-40 degrees celcius to a sudden nasty drop of temperatures in the 9-20 degree range...ouch! The town has a big river, great for kyaking. It has a mountain bike park right on the edge of town. It ... read more

As it was Canberra Day (and a long weekend), we headed off to the Snowy Mountains - which are not at all snowy at this time of year- to do some walking and enjoy the autumn weather. It was grey the day we arrived, and pouring with rain the day we left, but on Sunday we had fabulous weather - a clear blue sky and hot sunshine. We took the chair-lift from Thredbo village to the Eagles Nest, and from there walked first to the Kosiosko lookout to get a glimpse of Australia's highest mountain (really more of a bump than a mountain, but it's the highest point on the continent!), before following the track across the ridgeline and through Dead Horse Gap, back down to the valley and back along the river to Thredbo. ... read more

We had a great few days staying with Bridget and her family when we arrived in Sydney. The first night John cooked the biggest steaks that you ever seen on the BBQ, making Sam’s week! Bridget took us on the Manly scenic walk, which is a lovely 9km coastal route, passing through lots of harbour beaches where families were out for the day swimming and having BBQs. It is strange to see areas of the sea cordoned off for swimming but necessary, as there are harbour sharks! We finished at Manly beach where the boys went for a swim and just as the lifeguards were announcing that there were lots of bluebottles appearing in the water, Sam got stung by one! They are jellyfish like creatures, and it managed to practically wrap itself all the way ... read more

Russell - We headed out of Melbourne on the Hume Highway or the Sydney Road as it is called there. It is the fastest route to Sydney but we weren’t going to be taking it all the way. We wanted to take a detour through the Snowy Mountains to see just how snowy they were. The drive north through Victoria is surprising long however and actually quite dull. We stopped for lunch in a rest area overlooking a lake with a sunken forest but apart from that there wasn’t much to tell. We did cross the no fruit fly border but we were sad to see that there weren’t any fruit flies loitering at the border waiting for the opportunity to rush it. It was just a sign in the road. Eventually we came to our ... read more

hey! right well we started the trip early- or 4 me just an extension of the previous day! and set off to wilson's promitory! this is a beautiful national park, where we saw wild roos, several different wombats species(amber), emu's etc. this place is absolutely huge an so diverse, we started off in the plains with the animals, then ventured a little further to this stunning little bay where we saw a (snowy) wombat- not entirely sure that’s right but he was just wondering across the beach. what was so cool about these animals is that they're wild and et they let you just wonder through their territory totally unbothered by us. we then went to another beautiful reserve, where you can camp which had they most beautiful scenery- blue blue skies(also was feeling heat), mountains ... read more
