We leave Nelson Bay today. I really like it here, and hope I can come back one day. Spent a lovely half an hour sitting on "my" garden swing and listening to the birds. It is hard to convey in words just how loud they are! Loaded up the car and said thankyou and goodbye to the couple who run Port Stephens Motor Lodge. After a bit of stress, we got back on the Pacific Highway, and headed north. Quite a long drive. Stopped at a Koala breeding centre called "Billabong" near Port McQuarrie. The koalas aren't very interesting to watch! Thery hardly ever move, and 20hours of each day is spent sleeping!! Thery are SO cute though. There were also kangaroos, in an open enclosure, where you could walk around with them, and feed them. ... read more

G'day mate, After leaving Sydney, we were heading for Port Macquarie, but the drive was too much for one day, so we stopped for one night in Newcastle - aussie style!!! We got to Newcastle by the afternoon, so we had time to check it out. We stayed in a camp the otherside of the river to Newcastle, so caught the ferry across. Our first impressions were…well…a town of weirdos to be honest! The kind that you avoid on the street if you see them coming your way. We just had a quick look around the small town before heading back to the camp. Next day, we were up ready to go to Port Macquarie. We arrived by midday so got settled in and then went for a walk. The park was right by the breakwater, ... read more

After Boxing day the weather was still overcast so we decided to start the long drive to Sydney. We spent most of the day driving and with Tom sleeping most of the way it wasn't the most exciting drive - good job we had cruise control! When we arrived at Port Macquarie the sun was shining so we were really pleased we had come today! Port Macquarie is very popular with Sydney residents and was very busy as it was their summer holidays. Luckily we found a hotel right on the sea front - a 1950's throwback hotel which I found a little creepy but it was fine for what we wanted! The area is famous for its fishing and everywhere you looked there were people fishing and fishing boats. We had a wonder along the ... read more

There aren't too many better places to spend Christmas than Ange's mum's. They've built a fantastic house up in the hills overlooking the Great Dividing Range, the view from which is just about the best of any house I've ever stayed in. And it's got a pool. And a pool table. And a bar. And a hot tub. And a huge barbie. It’s the sort of place you'd kill for! It's big too. John took me for a tour in their 4x4 and it's about a kilometre from one end to the other up and down the top of the hill side. Incredibly steep in places too; loved going off-road, forcing our way through the bush tracks the firebrigade have put in. Can see why you do it now, Delfy! They have to back-burn every now ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry it has been a while since we last updated the blog but we have been busy travelling, you know!!! Since our last entry we stayed a bit longer in Kaikoura where we went swiming with dolphins and whale watching. Then we went to Christchurch and stopped on the way to Hanmersprings where they had some nice thermal pools. We then had to return the van, it was hard to leave our home behind but we were also glad to sleep in a proper bed in the backpacker for a few days. It was also nice to stop somewhere for more than 48 hours and to get to visit Cristchurch properly. Before we left NZ we took a day return on the tranzalpine train, one of the most amazing train journey there is. On ... read more

After our short stay in Newcastle we decided to let the kids loose on Port Macquarie for three days. We arrived quite early due to the roads being better the further north we have come. It took us 5 hours to drive 250 km earlier in the week and we did the same distance in 3 hours with a toilet stop. I couldn’t work out why until Chloe pointed out the speeds that I had been doing, the hand marks in the door handle and the fact that she was white as a sheet. Oh dear, Russ was over doing it a bit then!!!!!!!!!! We went to a caravan type site at the top end of town, only to find the place packed due to a music festival that was being held there on Friday and ... read more

You'll be wondering where all these blogs came from & them so up-to-date. Well we've been here in Port Macquarie since Tuesday & have had free internet access all that time so have been putting it to good use. Port is a big town with around 9 beaches...only visited the one & twas very nice. Not a whole lot of backpackers about. It has been a mixture of thunder showers & sunshine since we've been here so you might leave in the bikini & come home with the towel wrapped around to protect you from the showers.....as you can imagine it's a fruitless effort seeing as the towel is hardly any good for dryng you in the first place... We arrived here in the early hours of the morning but thankfully we had a charitable bus-driver ... read more
