You'll be wondering where all these blogs came from & them so up-to-date. Well we've been here in Port Macquarie since Tuesday & have had free internet access all that time so have been putting it to good use. Port is a big town with around 9 beaches...only visited the one & twas very nice. Not a whole lot of backpackers about. It has been a mixture of thunder showers & sunshine since we've been here so you might leave in the bikini & come home with the towel wrapped around to protect you from the showers.....as you can imagine it's a fruitless effort seeing as the towel is hardly any good for dryng you in the first place... We arrived here in the early hours of the morning but thankfully we had a charitable bus-driver ... read more

The days and nights are difficult, sleeping is near impossible......not really, we are having an amazing time. The first few days were spent in Sydney where we went to the aquarium and dined some expensive but wonderful cuisine (Craig managed to find a place on Manly Beach that sold Castle beer and Boerwors... he was a happy camper!). We left Sydney on Monday 1st October and headed for the Blue Mountains, after navigating the Pacific Highway to discover that it is a toll road that does not accept cards.....and we had 30cents - hmmmmm, Luckily Craig and his baby blues charmed us through it! We stayed one night in Katoomba, the scenery was stunning (check the pics!) Then we headed for the Jenolan Caves, down the most bendy road imaginable (or so we thought!) The caves ... read more

Jour 5 (24/09/07) 5h45, le réveil sonne ! Qu’est ce qu’il y a ? Pourquoi faire ?

After leaving a very slow Port Stephens behind, I was headed north towards Port Macquarie. It is small port located about 6 hours north of Sydney. It sits on the farth south end of the sub-tropical rainforest and is home to the largest population of wild Koalas. I caught an early bus and arrived around 1:30. After getting settled I wandered to town for Starbucks Coffee. The only place in Australia to get a cup of drip coffee. Everywhere either serves instant coffee or espresso style. I've been spending my money on expensive coffee rather than booze. I was up early the following day for a tour around the town. The bike only had one gear and to stop you needed to slam down backwards on the petals. This if fine if I was 7 years ... read more

So our journey west to the Blue Mountains was well worth it. We arrived at a campsite in Katoomba and pitched there for the night. The first night in the camper was a fun one, it was good to go 'back to basics' by cooking dinner on gas outside our van at the foot of the mountains. This was done in what felt like freezing conditions only achievable with a big box of red wine to hand. The next day we decided to take a days walk down and around the 'Grand Canyon' where we could get well in the mix of this national park wonder. The walk took a few hours before we jumped back in our camper and headed for our next stop, a rest area off the Eastern highway. These rest areas offer ... read more

We left sydney a day earlier than we had originally planned, and so we decided on our way to Port Macquarie that we would have a small stop in Newcastle. This was a very nice little place, but totally bizarre and very different from the real Newcastle! There was not much to do there, so we decided to continue our hunt for wildlife and hoped to see some animals there as it was not as built up as some of our previous destinations, and i guess we got our wish of sorts. Strange thinng about newcastle was everything was dead! We went to the beach and saw a few ded fish on the shore. I think there had been some kind of oil spill there recently, as the woman from the hostel mentioned that there had ... read more

So the excitment of living in a van down by the river has begun to deteriorate as quickly as our van itself. What we failed to mention previously was that our van had nearly 250,000 miles on it and we were driving a distance similiar to that of Seattle to San Diego. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if when we pulled into Sydney, the wheels instantly fell off and the engine died in a final plume of black smoke. It has already decided to be stubborn and either stumble or just shut off intermittantly while we are driving. We are kind of hoping that the last couple of hundred K's to Sydney are down hill so if worst comes to worst we can just soap box derby it into town. After leaving the Sunshine Coast ... read more

Well I am in Port Macquarie at the moment. It's sunny.. but still not as warm as I'd like it to be. I haven't ventured outside yet, so I don't have any news on what it's like.,.. but I did want to write about my journey up here. 24 hours exactly (minus 5 minutes I suppose) I arrived in PM. The busride wasn't as bad as most would think it was. I think I slept most of the time last night until about 10 when we were pulling into the sydney area. After that. I don't think I slept at all.. which is the downside to a good sleep the night before. On the bus I did meet 2 very interesting Brits, and a very nice local lady who was discussing her recipes with me.. they ... read more
