Some one has suggested that the planning is half the fun. Maybe, but getting out there and discovering fascinating places beats the planning bit. However, without the planning, we wouldn't know where to poke our noses. We generally make the first day driving short so that the morning of departure is easy getting the house mothballed for the period we will be away. As it happened, that was all done, washing dry and stowed, and we were ready to leave a couple of hours earlier, so we travelled to the border town of Wallangarra for our first night out. It is a couple of years since we drove out towards NSW via this rout. Last time, Cunningham's Gap where we drive from the plains up through The Great Dividing Range to the plateau, the road was ... read more

Yesterday was a maintenance and blog day. Then today, before we set off for Coonabarabran, I picked a few of the black olives to use in cooking (we don’t like eating them straight). The owner of the park gave me a paper with the instructions and recipe for bottling them, after first soaking out the bitterness for ten days, so I’ll have a go. On our journey, as we entered the town of Gilgandra, we kept seeing references to the “Coo-ee” town and had no idea how a town could lay claim to a call so we stopped to find out. At the Tourist Information Centre, we were directed to a display which showed the story. It seems that “coo-ee” is an Aboriginal call used to communicate in the bush that was taken up by Bushmen ... read more

Geo: -31.7117, 148.663We departed sunny Brisbane at 5.15am. Its still dark, so how do we know its sunny? We are looking forward to the biggest road trip we have ever undertaken and this one will make Route 66 look like a drive to the local store. We estimate we will travel approximately 12,000 km in 26 days and only cross one long section of road twice, that being the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor Plain.Today's Challenge - To check the theory that every town must have a Chinese restaurant before they are valid to apply for a Post Office. At 100 km we have driven through very heavy fog and now the sun is just starting to peek through, so I reach for my new sunny's. We are already sick of counting the headlights pearing through the ... read more

We always like being in the country where the views are of sweeping plains and far horizons. We had some time in the interesting old town of Gulgong, the town that once graced our $10 note, along with it's famous son, poet Henry Lawson .. before both were replaced with other bards - Banjo Patterson and Dame Mary Gilmore Every June long weekend - which in fact will be next weekend - Gulgong celebrates The Henry Lawson Festival, with a parade down the main street and various Lawson works being performed. Of course, as is our way, we were too early for it all, (always just too early or just too late) although we did see Gulgong's windows dressed for the coming festivities. After discussing beef and wool prices with some of the locals, we then ... read more
