The home stretch was in sight as we left Berlin. We spent two days in Cologne, in western Germany, enjoying non-backpacker-like luxury in a hotel overlooking the Rhine - other highlights of Cologne were the great food in the local breweries and the surprising number of professional beggars crowding the entry to the local cathedral. We then flew to London for a few days and finished off some essentials before heading back to Sydney - the National Gallery in London was well worth a look and a day trip to Oxford (didn't meet the romanticised image that I had in my mind), Stratford upon Avon (Shakespeare's home town, and Warwick Castle (where we played medieval aristocrats and militia for a few hours). Otherwise, it was comforting to get back to London for straightforward pub food and ... read more

Some of us were still on adrenalin highs from last night’s athleticism. My mood was purely tea and Tim Tam related after a morning of relaxation and gossip catch up with Eleanor and Andrew - the final episode of Home and Away in Australia being an exciting topic (I’ll hold off saying anything here as I’d hate to ruin the experience for many English viewers in 6 months time…). Even so we all looked fabulous as we arrived at the Royal Canberra Yacht Club at Yarralumla. The day was warm and a bit cloudy but fairly pleasant overall. The place brings back a lot of memories for us as we used to sail, catch yabbies and generally misbehave at the yacht club as kids. We paid a visit to the Lisa Bryce Memorial Window - destroyed ... read more

The Last Blog Home. Home sweet Home. Questions, Queries, Challenges, Confusion, Excitement, Anxiety, Sadness, Awe and Pride. Needless to say, at the end of a trip like the one we've had, a plethora of feelings and emotions come flying in from all directions. So, we're back at home. Are we different? Did we accomplish what we set out to achieve? Was it worth all that money? What have we learnt about ourselves, each other and the world? Big questions, no? And to be frank, I don't think we have all the answers. With more time and distance from our experience of 2006, maybe things will become clearer and there'll be that lighting-bolt moment. But for the time being we have to settle with what we have, and in this, our last blog, will attempt to ... read more

Tensions were high the night before the wedding - and that was just the relatives! We arrived at Belconnen AMF Bowling in sunny Canberra (after an adventurous lap of honour but that’s another story…) for a Marman vs Smith bowl-off. The Marmans started off in fine form with Mikey, Lisa and Bevan cutting up the lanes with some fantastic displays of bowling. The Smith family weren’t so bad themselves, although there were rumours of illegal substitutions. Undeterred, the Marmans pushed on and won with an average of just over 1 point per player. Well done all those involved, not to mention the support team. Our team went on to play another game and finished in fine form - I dare say a credit to the Marman side? He he he…... read more

... read more

Canberra is the national capital of Australia. It is a big city but small population, the just more 300 thausands of population is very similar to Yangshuo's.The most buildings are Garvement department and another countris' embssy.
