We left Wash D.C. and headed West to Indiana for a quick visit with Tom's daughter Kathy and our 2 grand daughters. Since you all ask, we can say our little miracle child Megan, and her sister Taylor are doing great. Then off to the Adirondacks where we had no cell phone because Tom lost it in a 2 hour tubing trip that took 5 hours. The water wasn't moving, the sun went down and I got shaky cold. Tom said "save Karen or save the phone?" mmmmmmm. So I dried out and we headed to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Spent a few days on a little island. Beautiful. Now we are in Kalamazoo, Michigan, waiting out storms before we go to Mackinaw Island. We miss all our friends and thank ya'll for responding to our ... read more

North America » United States » South Dakota » Pierre August 24th 2007

Got back from a trip to South Dakota late last evening. On the agenda was a stayover in Pierre, SD where I had a couple hours to drive around the city. I have been to Pierre several times but it's been a year since my last visit. The town is experiencing a little bit of a building boom with some new retail and housing being built. For a capitol city, it's a small city (about 14,000); however, it is extremely pretty. According to wikipedia, Pierre is one of only 5 state capitols which is not served by an interstate highway system and it is about a half hour from the interstate. There are lots of open areas on the Capitol grounds with various state building located around it. Several memorials, statues and fountains make up the ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida August 24th 2007

Everything is back to normal in Merida as I can see on my little north end of town. I have heard from my friend in Veracruz and all is well on that end. The Diario de Yucatan, http://www.yucatan.com.mx/, reports this morning that there is a preliminary official count of 10 dead across Mexico because of Dean, but that those who passed away prior to, during and after that are attributed to various 'points' as they call them are not considered in the count. A fall from an upper portion of a house, an overturned car, a falling limb during cleanup, an electrocution of a home owner trying to repair a damaged line, a drowning by one who ignored safety personnel, etc. Storm didn't actually cause the deaths. Article continues on to say that all was not ... read more

Zuerst mal Sorry für die lange Abwesenheit!!!der Travelblog wollte unsere Berichte nicht updaten.......aber jetzt: So, die Grenze war kein Problem. Nur kurze formalitäten und die obligaten Fragen wie do you have weapons und whats your buisness in Switzerland….and what do you want to do in Alaska….was wohl?

North America » Canada » Quebec August 24th 2007

I’m just back from a five-week adventure in another French speaking place-Québec! After some debating between returning to France for the summer or trying out Québec I decided to enroll in a 5 week intensive language program in Chicoutimi (a town of about 70,000 people 2 hours north of Québec City) at the University of Québec. It was marvelous! After Paris I completed my degree at CU Boulder, but, sadly, did not have the time to take any French courses. So I was rather rusty going into this program after a year away from the language. Anyway, I grabbed a plane to Montréal and took the city, and the start to my five weeks, by storm. The last time I visited Montréal it was in the dead of winter, so this was an entirely different experience. ... read more

Good evening all! Currently typing this from a internet cafe in San Fran! Only got about 4 days to write about so not too bad for once! 19th August - San Simeon, - We left our LA hotel at around 8.30 after meeting the new girl who was joining our group - she seems pretty cool and should be able to handle us guys for the next few weeks! After driving up through the Hollywood hills to get a closer look at the hollywood sign we hit highway number 1 which is one of the most scenic drives you will ever take! After stopping off in Santa Barbara (the old hollywood) we continued on our long journey to San Simeon picking up some hitchhikers on route which was quite random! The guy we picked up was ... read more

Morgen ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Rocky Mountains August 24th 2007

Wow- after getting back from 3 days in the Rocky Mountains, I was blown away by how pretty they are, and the variety of flora & fauna. Every 30 mins the scenery changes, and you enter a different climate with new animals. It's really amazing, and you get really entranced by driving through it or hiking. Becca & I left Boulder after the triathlon on the 22nd (or rather after our nap after the triathlon), and headed to Estes Park, on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The drive there was really nice, but we were both really tired, so we pitched a tent in the Moraine Campground and found a nice joint for some bbq ribs for dinner. Sleeping in the tent is something that I am not really used to (the 3 ... read more

After 3 days in DC and busily helping to set up Sierra in her new environs we fled to a people-less area, and are staying in a pretty amazing hotel in Warm Springs over the Blue Ridge Mnts in Virginia. The Warm Springs Motor Hotel - which says nothing about the fact that it is the old Warm Springs Courthouse and we are staying in the converted jailhouse. It is very plush and totally filled with collectibles ranging from confederate soldiers to art deco tables and lamps, African carvings, deep south antiques and monkeys - both real and fake. People with great drawls live here, and I’m tempted to say ya'all as well. Jule has deteriorated into sentences like “Now that we’ve aten lunch, les go” This is the same hotel we stayed in 13 years ... read more
