We got up early today before our flight to 'Bike the Bridge'! We hired mountain bikes and off we went cycling for a few hours along the waterfront (up and down some hills) to the fog covered bridge. I presumed that Rich knew his way around a mountain bike until I heard him wailing at the bottom of the first hill that 'he couldn't do it' and 'nobody told me' and 'my bike is stuffed' so I tried to give him a few lessons on the art of changing gears and after a few more huffs and puffs he was away (see attached photo!) So off we went, cycling along the pedestrian path although we didn't go all the way to the end as it was very low fog and we couldn't see too much of ... read more

Would you believe that our bus into New Orleans actually arrived early - this is a definite first for Greyhound buses since we arrived! Our hostel was just one block from one of the main streets into town so good for location but did seem to be home to some people who live there permanently and were slightly weird but quite friendly. Let's not even mention the state of the kitchen though which meant our good intentions to stay in and cook failed. Oh well, more time to go out and enjoy the New Orleans nightlife! We didn't realise that we would be here on the 2nd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina which meant New Orleans has been all over the news for the past week and the President was in town at the same time we ... read more

... read more

Okay, so. Due, in large part, to my laziness, I have decided to stop preparing for India for a while. Well actually, it wasn't so much a decision as a gradual increase in inactivity and a gradual decrease in production. I am tired of pondering such exhausting questions as, "how many pairs of underwear do people typically go through in one year?" or "how many bottles of travel-sized hand sanitizer does the average India resident require each year to prevent horrible sickness?" I'm pretty sure that Indian people do not use travel-sized hand sanitizer--and even if my hands are as sterile as the counter top in a computer-manufacturing lab, my food will probably still be writhing with parasites. So I don't care. Instead, I have began taking a new approach to my preparation, doing things like: ... read more

Written: 8/29/07 Before heading to Russia my sister and I flew out to New York City a day earlier than when I was supposed to meet up with my group. We arrived in New York around 6 p.m. And then we headed to our friend Jodi’s apartment in Queens. That night my sister, Melisa, Jodi and I drove into the city for dinner and to see the town. That night I saw Rockefeller Center, Times Square and Madison Square Gardens. When we were getting ready to head back to Queens, we met up with Theresa, a girl who was in my study abroad group. It was exciting to meet her, especially before meeting the whole group. The next morning Melisa, Theresa, and I took the subway to Ground Zero and then headed to Central Park. We ... read more

So, how can you pass up a $300 round trip ticket to Hawaii from San Francisco... home of the cold summer? The answer is, you can't! So this bear is back in paradise for 6 nights of relaxation and sitting on the beach. I boarded an American Airlines 757 on Wednesday morning and made it to Oahu on-time. And just who knew that gate agents could actually be helpful? I inquired at the gate about purchasing an upgrade and the agent actually tried to use my status to get it for me and when she was unsuccessful, she sent be back to the electronic check-in kiosk and guess what, I ended up in first class. And, I have learned something new about American... check in at the Kiosk, it is the only way to obtain a ... read more

Okay, so it is day two here in paradise and somehow for the second time that I have been here on Waikiki in the past year, there is a parade. In December it was, of course, the Christmas parade, this trip it is the Okinawian Festival parade, who knew Okinawians had their own festival? Early in the morning I visited Ala Moana Mall that was engineered by my papa. It had been YEARS since I had been there... and my how it has changed. It was a quiet day otherwise, I loafed around the pool and then finished the day with a beautiful sunset and the registration party at Hula's. It was very fun and great to meet what seems to be a very fun group of guys. Tomorrow it is off to the windward side ... read more

North America » Bermuda August 31st 2007

Greetings from Bermuda! Since arriving on Tuesday we've been busy visiting the Crystal Caves, Horseshoe beach, snorkeling at St.Catherines beach, zipping around on scooters, boating, and more snorkeling. Kathie's sister Elizabeth has been a fantastic hostess showing us everything Bermuda has to offer! The weather has been a mix of hot and humid, rainy and humid, and cloudy and humid. It's a bit of an adjustment from the dry Calgary weather. We're slowly working on our tans (although it's so much easier to burn - the sun is so strong here). Kathie's favorite part so far has been the afternoon naps on the beach and feeding the fish at the shipwreck. Jordan's favorite part was floating in the cove at paradise lakes for 2 hours trying to wait out a rain storm. The rain didn't go ... read more

Left Mt Rainer NP and headed to the ocean. It was a bummer day for us, coming out of the back country and into civilization again. We ran into a huge traffic jam in Olympia - a ten-mile backup. For the last week and a half, rush hour traffic for us consisted of seeing another car heading in the same direction as us. Dave saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time in Wetport, WA. He was surprised at the slate color of the sand and the fine texture like talcom powder. It packs down so hard below the high water mark, that you can actually ride your bike on it with realative ease. We traveled down the coast and came to our destination of the day, Cape Disappointment at the mouth of the Columbia River. ... read more
