I don’t know why I’m writing this blog anymore. Nothing is interesting or exciting. We had tickets to hike Diamond Head this morning at 6am. Kamie said he wanted to return to Pearl Harbor and do a guided tour on the USS Missouri. The idea was to hike Diamond Head then Uber over to the Missouri and back. He wasn’t up in time for Diamond Head so we lost our ticket time (reservations only there) and we left late for the Missouri. Don’t get me started. The USS Missouri was the last battleship ever used by the USA and the site of the surrender signing by Japan in World War II. It was an okay tour but then it got hot standing out in the sun listening to the guide. We found out on the way ... read more

October 24, Tuesday Today was a lots of walking and exploring day – chilly, like 50, but sunny for much of the day. NO RAIN, that’s really all that matters. We enjoyed a lie in – the bed is very comfortable! Till about 7:30 ish, and were off on a 4.5 mile walk. Both coats, hat and gloves were needed to start with, much less to end! It was probably a mile too long, but at least there was only about 450’ change in elevation. It mostly followed the river, which was nice. LOTS of mountain bike trails off to the sides, but we sedately followed the biking, walking, cross country trail. When it’s snowing, this entire place must be hopping indeed. There’s much more to do than ski, obviously. Only a few chickadees and a ... read more

I was awake around 4:30am Hawaii time (which is 9:30am Missouri time). It was dark and pouring rain outside. Our waitress at dinner last night had told us they were in the middle of a drought and had been praying for rain. Well, they got plenty this morning. I went back to sleep until around 6:30am. Kamie had stayed-up half the night on the balcony so he was in bed snoring. The rain had quit so I walked around the resort to see some areas I had not checked-out previously. Our resort is 22 acres. I walked almost the entire resort this morning so I’m getting my steps in every day. This place is full of early morning walkers and people getting their daily exercise on vacation. The resort is beautiful and very well taken care ... read more

Savannah, Georgia is sublime. There have been a handful of places that I’ve been reluctant to leave on this trip. I was heartbroken to leave Savannah. What is so marvelous about this small Southern city? Forsyth park, Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room, Bonaventure Cemetery, E. Shavers Bookstores (both of them), Bull Street, Riverfront, Doki Doki, Leopolds, Slyders, SCAD, Tybee Beach, Tequila & Tacos, The Wayne Mansion, Vintage & Thrift Stores... The moss laden trees lining street after street of houses, from very small charming bungalows to mansions that would rival any in California. The city has managed to maintain the famed southern hospitality without seeming too sweetly hospitable. The modernity of Savannah doesn't overshadow the old fashioned appeal. We have been to a couple of dozen towns and cities on this trip and without a moment's hesitation, ... read more

From StarsInsider, and me, of course. In Europe, Asia, or anywhere else in the world with advanced railroad systems, you can easily hop on a train that'll take you from one major city to the next. However, those who wish to travel to further destinations will have to undergo train rides that will last for hours. Naturally, many of us will get bored along the way, because we don't think there's anything to do on a train. But that couldn't be further from the truth! In this article, we'll show you the true joys of being on a train compared to other means of transportation. I have done my share of rail travel: the longest was the Trans-Siberian Railway across Russia, a total of 5772 miles (9289 km), over eight time zones, and built by over ... read more

We were away from our lovely spacious Montreal flat by 8:15, fortunately heading away from the main flow of traffic. Within 30 mins we were out of the city and into the calmer countryside. As we drove northwest towards the national park, we realized that we were indeed late for the leaves, but the tamaracks were still brilliant. Kent Ohio has some of these artic wonders – deciduous but with needles. A local told us that the recent rains and winds made everything fall a bit early. Once at the park we dutifully paid our entrance, even though no one was there. The roads were sometimes paved, sometimes not, but were a lot better than the state parks in upper Michigan where we go looking for petosky stones. We were soon rewarded by seeing a Rough ... read more

Woke Up In Paradise this morning – How about you? Okay. Just kidding. Today was a loud wake-up from Kamie’s mom at 5am with a text saying his 101-year-old granny had passed away in her sleep overnight. We took showers and left for our 8am reservations at Pearl Harbor. Our Uber said 12-minutes from Hilton Hawaiian Village to Pearl Harbor Memorial Center. We grabbed an Uber in a stinky vehicle with a guy bumping his stereo speakers for an hour through congested rush hour traffic. Why are these people not working from home? Hawaii needs to get the memo that WFH is here to stay. By the way, Hawaii has a major littering and soil erosion problem. Typical island sites but you would think because it’s an American property, the Hawaii DOT would clean-up the sides ... read more

Another long day of adventures in French-speaking Montreal. We didn’t rush to awake, which made for a lovely lie-in. We walked the 3 blocks to the closest Metro station, Cadillac, and figured out how to ask for 2 day passes, and which line and platform and even negotiated the change of lines half way in. We were about 8 stops to the east of where we wanted to go in the Old Town, also called the Old Port, full of cobble-stoned streets and shops that didn’t look very busy. The Basilica was busy with morning mass until 12:30. A kindly lady saw us reading our maps, asked where we wanted to go and gave us a hint. We walked past the Basilica and just wandered a few circles in the Old Town until it was after ... read more

My alarm beeped at 3am and I hit snooze and closed my eyes again. Another day starting before 4am. Surprisingly, Kamie didn’t protest about today’s six hour flight so I suppose he was only silently hating me now. Ha We checked our bags and breezed through TSA Pre-check (thank you Lord for this wonderful option). I will say, at Springfield TSA Precheck and LA TSA Precheck, both times, Kamie was pulled aside. He looks like a drug lord but no big o’ bags of money to be found. We both grabbed some Starbucks for breakfast (this specific location in the airport was completely SOLD OUT of the iced pumpkin chai latte). It was cold in the airport and Kamie was cold on the plane yesterday too but he chose to not bring his jacket even after ... read more

For about the past six months, we’ve been living and working in Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois, just 35 miles west of Chicago. When most people think of Chicago, they think of the United States' fourth largest city with about 3 million inhabitants. Toss in the total number of people that live in the suburbs and that total swells to about 10 million. We are going to save all that for the next blog and spend our time here describing some of the unique and cool things we did outside of this area. We’ve managed to do a lot of exploring and certainly do not want to provide a blow-by-blow of every weekend, but did want to talk about some of the highlights. If you are in the area visiting and venture away from ... read more
