Sunday 24th September 2023 at sea Monday 25th September 2023 - Sydney, Nova Scotia As it was, we left at 08.30 am and apart from a lecture in the morning about the Mi’kmaq indigenous people of Nova Scotia, didn’t do a lot else except whale watching, and sitting in the sun!! (making the most of it!!) Arrived in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia about 8.00am but had to wait for a tender until about 9.00am and the ride took about 20mins! There didn’t seem too much to do in Sydney itself and there were another 3 big cruise ships in Port, so we managed to find another couple (Hong + Connor!!) to share a taxi with us to do part of the Cabot Trail with us and also see the pretty town of Baddeck (Can ... read more

Thursday 21st September 2023 8.00hrs – Saturday 23rdSeptember 2023 19.00hrs St Johns, Newfoundland Boy was I glad to see land again, especially when we heard that some of the Bridge windows had smashed in the storm as well!! It seemed quite rough as we were approaching ‘The Narrows’ where we had a good view of Signal Hill and all the old houses that seemed to tumble down into the water, as well as the Cathedral and “The Rooms” high up on the hill!! ‘The Narrows’ is a small stretch of water that opens into the sheltered bay of St Johns. John Cabot discovered Newfoundland in 1497 and St John’s is the oldest Port in Canada but the first English fishing Captain to enter St Johns was ‘Admiral of the Harbour by Ancient Custom’ and Sir Humphrey ... read more

After our stay in Austin, we continued eastbound by going north first to Weatherford, a city just north of Fort Worth, to visit Natalie’s cousin. Neither of us have many relatives left, so we try to stay connected. It is so great to lay eyes on their new home and hear their plans to make it their own. They are RVers too, so they are a great resource to talk with and get new ideas. One thing about visiting friends and relatives is they know the best places to eat. We had fantastic BBQ at the Natty Flat BBQ in Weatherford. The BBQ restaurants go to great efforts to create their own unique character and it’s Interesting to experience their efforts. This one had the world’s largest cedar rocker outside and was very rustic inside. (Side ... read more

Where does everybody go when they go? … I am here. I’ve already seen the bottom so there’s nothing to fear. I know I’ll be ready when the devil is near. I am here. I am here. All of this wrong and I’m still right here. I don’t have the answers but the question is clear. “Where does everybody go when they go?” I am here! You ever know what your life was meant to be? What in your past led you to be the person you are today? Questions that don’t normally cross my mind, that is until Tuesday night. One minute I am jamming out while watching the 82nd Airborne Choir sing their rendition of the Pink song, “I am here”. The next minute I literally turned into a puddle of raw emotion ... read more

We collected our moho on Friday and headed east towards Bend where we stayed for 3 days. We had a "quick" stop at Walmart which took 1 hrs and 20 minutes for groceries. After 90 miles of driving we stopped at Detroit Lake State forest recreation area at 5pm. Joni and Jim the camp hosts were great and gave us a spot right next to the lake. The Lake is a dammed river which they use for recreational purposes during the summer. About now they start to open the dam intime for winter rain to fill it up. Oregon don't do ordinary roads they have scenic Byways and our journey took us through two. They do what they say on the tin supply stunning scenery. We travelled along Cascades scenic byway through McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass scenic ... read more

The Sierra Nevada mountain range lies mainly in central California, between the central valley and the Nevada state border. Millions of years ago, granite began forming deep in the ground, and then began to rise due to tectonic movement. Finally glaciers shaped and exposed the granite into the range that exists today. The name of the range comes from a Spanish translation, meaning "Snowy Mountains". Native communities inhabited lower lying areas of the region for thousands of years, and American exploration began in the 1820's but was not fully explored until the 1910's because of how difficult the range was to access. The range spans about 640 km (400 miles) north to south, and 80-130 km across from west to east. The southern part of the range tends to have the highest elevations. Much of the ... read more

Wisconsin Dells, a city in southern Wisconsin, lies on the Wisconsin River in a region of glacier-carved sandstone formations. Its numerous theme parks and entertainment centers include Noah's Ark Water Park, and Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park. We camped at Mirror Lake State Park, a forested reserve surrounding the namesake lake, is known for nature trails and camping. The leaves were starting to change into beautiful red and orange colors. We took an afternoon and strolled the downtown area, stopping in many of the souvenir shops. Like so many tourist towns there were many t-shirt and fudge shops. We managed to resist the temptation of both. We took a morning boat ride through the Dells. We sat on the top deck and had a spectacular view of the sights! The boat stopped twice, first at ... read more

After Livingston, our next stop was Austin, where very good friends from Lynnwood had moved. We stayed at a wonderful RV resort park in a community just north of Austin named Lakeway, and it turned out to be an excellent and lucky choice because it was very close to our friend’s home and we had an excellent time with them. It certainly is wonderful to reconnect with friends, even though time is always too short. But then, it gives very good reasons to return. As we traveled from Livingston to Austin along lesser traveled highways, we noticed 2 things: There must be some unwritten regulation requiring 5 miles between Dollar General stores, if that much. Churches seem to be intermixed with them. For those who live in the northwest, this makes sense. The foliage and terrain ... read more

I wrote last week about the city, San Francisco, that many of us fell in love with during the 60s. Today, everything is much different, challenging, dangerous, filthy, politically divided, and in many areas, a quagmire. First some facts (from A Piece of Travel) to back me up: The rising cost of living and lack of new housing developments has led to an increase in the number of unhoused people on San Francisco’s streets. url=https://original.newsbreak.com/@b-rose-1684746/3040385423763-san-francisco-s-homeless-crisis-reaches-unprecedented-levels-in-may-2023-prompting-urgent-actionRampant drug use among the unhoused population is commonly blamed for the uptick in city-wide property damage and petty theft. As of 2022, San Francisco has the third-highest rate of homelessness in the nation, after Oakland and Los Angeles. According to the url=https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/s... read more

After the majestic beauty of Mount Equinox, we headed south for a very short hop of about 50 miles into The Berkshires, a highland region, back in Massachusetts. We will be staying at a place called The Vacation Village in the Berkshires, near a small hamlet called Hancock (on the Massachusetts/New York State border and a few miles south of the main town in the area, called Williamstown. Effectively, we will be in the very north-western corner of Massachusetts and about as far as you can get from Boston, whilst still being in the same State. This drive should be a doddle, especially in the beautiful weather, giving us time to explore a couple of places on the way and so we pulled off the freeway, intending to visit the town of Bennington, but when we ... read more
