Being of able body and mind, and having nothing to satiate the angst that has formed in my life as of late, I take this pledge to embark on my own journey of self discovery. While there is a destination, a means, and a rough time frame, all else I plan to leave unscripted and let the gods of the road write that story as they will. Many moons have passed since I initially dreamt of a cross country trip. A trip that would allow me to discover this America I spent four years of my life fighting for. The time has come, for it may quite possibly be the last chance before I sacrifice my life to the gods of the business world. Now is the time to sink or swim, to do or to ... read more

The thing that is so weird about America is how familiar it all is, yet I seem to be experiencing some of the strangest kind of culture shock of my life! It's as if someone has taken all of the over-the-top, in-your-face hyperbole of every bad Hollywood film or American sitcom and plonked it into real life... only the sad thing is that it's the other way around. It is ACTUALLY like that! Everyone is shouting all the time! Everywhere...EVERYWHERE there are advertisements demanding you buy stuff... or ELSE! There is a looming ominous feeling that you are about to be sued, shot or shafted by someone. At this stage, I'm just trying to adjust myself in order to be able to connect with someone on a human level. I'm going to be staying with a ... read more

Hey! I hope I'm posting this in the right spot. This site is awesome and I'm sure it makes it a lot easier for you to keep everyone posted. I'm surprised Austin didn't have something like this for his trip to Brazil. Reading your latest entry makes me really appreciate my home. I wish you luck and I'm sure you're very appreciated over there!... read more

After all this time the trip is right around the corner and it is time to wrap things up at work. Just trying to get the hang of this site in hopes that I can keep people posted on our travels. Mom, Dad, Jamie and I heading out on our big adventure on Sunday. Two more wake-ups! ... read more

When I got home from Valpo before Christmas, I thought, Oh I have plenty of time before I have to leave. I can just relax until Christmas...then it'll be time to start preparing. When Christmas rolled around, I thought, Ah, no big deal...the start of the new year will really mean it's coming up fast. Then all of a sudden it was New Year's. I thought, Ok, so it's January. I still have a whole month to go. And now it's the end of the month and I have only a few more days left in the US. I'm basically freaking out. Actually my whole family is a bit overwhelmed I think. Everyone's kind of on-edge and cranky. There's still a lot to be done...mainly laundry. Which reminds me, I have some things to take out ... read more

I'm two weeks away from departure. I'm a little bit nervous, just because there's so much left to do! Mostly bank stuff and packing. I plan to be packed by thursday, since I leave on sunday. That will give me time to rethink everything I packed (and hopefully unpack some of it). During the last 6 months or so of planning, I've come across a lot of good resources for travelers. Here's a short list of the highlights: SkyScanner This site lets you search for cheap flights for non-students. It's cool because you can look at a whole month's worth of fares in either a calendar format or a bar graph. You book the flight directly through the airline. STA Travel Best site ever for students. They have realllly good fares (mostly for students) as well ... read more

Well I just got my passport and visa in the mail. Thank goodness. My experience at the French Consulat on Monday was downright unpleasant. We found the building just fine, but we wanted to find a place for my mom to park while I went in. After driving around the block and getting a little bit lost, my mom just decided to drop me off. I hopped out and went inside. What an odd experience, getting to the consulate offices! You have to go up an escalator to the lobby, then go to a desk and show ID. They give you a little pass and that gets you on the elevator. I got up to the correct suite and followed the signs to the visa office. It turned out to be just a little room with ... read more

I just got an email from url=http://badgersabroad.wisc.edu/blog/index.php/archives/category/study-abroad-correspondents/pooja-singhmy good friend Pooja saying that she arrived and got semi-settled in in Montpellier. She missed one (or maybe two) of her connecting flights and had to be rescheduled! Stressful! But I'm SO happy to hear she's there safely. Tomorrow she's moving in with her host mom!!! Last weekend our friends threw us the best going away party everrr. We're big into parties with themes, so this was the Masquerade/Mardi Gras party of the year! We had a chicken dish, a salad, crescent rolls, a green bean casserole (French cut green beans...I told you we're loyal to the theme!), and of course sparkling grape juice "champagne" Then, as a craft project, we all made masks and took a bunch of silly pictures with them. Then for dessert we had petits ... read more
