After a good night's sleep, another day begins without fanfare. A few hunters left way too early, so we stayed in bed. This is not a working vacation. As usual, the chef prepared an awesome breakfast. Eventually, the chef even got dressed. This is one major advantage of RVing: bedclothes are just fine when you don't even have to emerge. After a while, we took another little stroll around the park. It is a nice park, and this time, we walked through the kiddie play area. They have a good collection of playground toys and games. There's even an RC car track. (The cars are available for rent from the office. Fancy that.) We might even have to try that out. You see, Natalie beat me at checkers last night, 2 out of 3, so we ... read more

Now that we've been here for a whole day, our 2nd night went well because we've become somewhat used to the different kind of sleeping arrangement, today is sort of a normal type of day. The point of the RV rental this week is to learn about the RV life and whether it will be to our liking. If everything went perfectly, it just wouldn't be a realistic learning experience now, would it? So, the first difficulty came up when we hooked up and turned on the water supply: the water just poured out the onboard tank's overflow. There shouldn't be a connection between them. A call to the dealer led us to decide to just keep the onboard tank full and live off the tank. Yesterday, we found the water spits out the faucets like ... read more

We decided several months ago to do this experiment, and wait until kids should be back in school. (Vacations seems to be more peaceful when children are in school.) You see, when I retire in a couple years, our temporary plan if everything continues well, is to sell our house and move into an RV and travel until we find a place we want to settle down. It really wouldn't work well if we buy the RV, use it for a month or two, then decide we dislike the whole exercise. So, if we learn about RVing first, we won't make that mistake. After reviewing RV rental outfits online, we decided to rent from Ryan's RV Town, and are quite pleased with the choice. They are very friendly and considerate, and they rent late model, quality ... read more

Well, we got up early to a gorgeous morning. Love this campground, as it is very beautiful and peaceful. Of course, being we're the only two parties in the place, it would be peaceful anywhere I guess. After a great breakfast, we got off to an early start at 7:30. Pretty amazing getting John and Diane going this early. This is going to be the longest leg of our trip, taking in two significant areas, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Ranier. We started off going East on the Spirit Lake Highway. This takes you to a place called Johnston Ridge, which overlooks the Lava Dome of the Mountain, Spirit Lake, and the wasteland below the mountain caused by the eruption. What was fascinating is that there is still considerable volcanic action going on, with vents spewing ... read more

Woke up in Hoodsport pretty early, as we got to bed early last evening. The RV Park, Glen Ayr, was pretty nice. Had full hookups and decent WIFI. It’s located right on the Hood Canal, and has access to a marina. After a nice breakfast, we departed for Quinault, WA via the Olympic National Park. This trip allows us to visit three National Parks that we’ve not before seen: Mt. Ranier NP, Olympic NP, and Crater Lake NP. We passed Lewis and Clark NP, but didn’t stop. As we headed north on US101, we intended to make stops at the Light House in Dungeness, WA, as well as 4-5 stops within the National Park. We soon discovered that the signage to these places was very poor, or not existent at all. We could find no signs ... read more

The beginning of our day was pretty leisurely. We got a late check out from the hotel, and after having breakfast, we vegged in our room until noon. A cab picked us up and brought us to the Cruise America rental location, and they processed us as soon as we arrived. We immediately left for the local Fred Meyers grocery store to stock up on our supplies for the next 9 days. Our grocery cart looked like we had 8 kids back at home we were trying to feed. After stowing everything away, we hit the road. Destination - TOTAL WINE store. Taking care of procuring our most important staples, we headed out once again, up US 5 for Toutle,WA. Traffic leaving the city was quite heavy, and just north of Portland, the smoke that is ... read more

TRAVEL DURING COVID In order to allay my daughter’s fears about my bringing home Covid from my trip to Mexico I followed suggested guidelines from the Covid Prevention Center while traveling; avoid crowds, wear a mask, and keep a safe distance apart. As an additional precaution when I returned to the United States, I decided to self-quarantine, camping alone for two weeks in a State Park. (The weather was so nice I actually stayed 21 days). I am a backpacker and have hiked in the Cascades in Washington State for almost thirty years. Usually, my trips are in the high country. Sometimes I hike with my daughter and sometimes with friends, but I often hike alone. This is however, a high-density camper area and I am rarely truly alone anymore. Someone is always passing me on ... read more

Today seemed like a great day to revive my old blog. Not a special day by any means, but a good day for reflection and to edit a lot of my former posts (HOLY DRAMA, BATMAN. Those entries had to change). Four days ago, I completed something that I never thought that I could: I hiked 30 miles in ONE day. Well 30.2 plus maybe another quarter mile to check out a viewpoint. But I'll get to that. First, an update. What a year it has been with COVID-19. Who knew that I would be sent home from work in March and told to telework until further notice. Who knew that "social distancing" would become the norm, and facial coverings would be mandatory whenever leaving the house. Who knew that life would change on a global ... read more

Now, many of us have our favorite sign in America. It could be the famous Las Vegas sign on the Strip, or the big Hollywood sign in the hills above LA. It might be Nathan's on Coney Island, or Randy's Donuts in LA. Some of you like Wrigley Field in Chicago or Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Any of the Route 66 signs evoke childhood memories of cruising down the highway until reaching the famous Santa Monica Pier. One of my favorites in the Pike Place Market sign in Seattle. Each of you probably have a favorite. And I may have missed a few, like Disneyland, Times Square, Gaslamp San Diego, Cafe du Monde in Nawlins, or Acme Oyster House in Boston. So, if I had to pick one sign that means the ... read more

My spouse Jeff was invited to referee a diving meet in Federal Way, south of Seattle. As airfares were reasonable, I decided to tag along and enjoy a long weekend in the area. Incidentally, this was the same meet I followed Jeff to two years ago. Jeff arrived a few days before I did. Revisiting a One-of-a-Kind Museum I arrived in Federal Way mid-morning on Friday, February 28th. I decided to remain in the Federal Way vicinity that day as I wanted to revisit the amazing Pacific Bonsai Museumnearby. After checking in at the hotel, I consulted my Apple Maps app for directions for the three mile walk to the museum. When I did this walk two years ago, I walked through a slightly iffy area, and so I felt relieved when the app suggested a ... read more
