It is March 14, or National Pi Day, Happy 3.14!!! Mathematicians' favorite holiday is coming up! Pi Day 2023, which falls on Tuesday, March 14, is an annual holiday devoted to celebrating the one and only true magic number: π. Sure, pi is 3.14, a mathematical constant, never-ending, the circumference-to-diameter ratio of a circle — you know the drill. But it is also the perfect excuse to indulge in pies of all sorts, thanks to the restaurants and bakeries who celebrate the fun holiday by offering deals, discounts and freebies. Whether you're a fan of pizza pies or traditional dessert pies (or both, of course!), it's likely you'll be to find a deal that will satisfy your craving and save you some cash. This year, we're seeing fun deals from our favorite pizza joint... read more

Yesterday I saw a PSA (public service announcement) that the Federal Emergency Management Agency put out using clips from the film Zombieland. There was a gag in this movie where the main character explained his tips or rules for surviving the Zombie apocalypse. So, FEMA had bent those into a PSA with rules for dealing with an emergency, such as an earthquake or tsunami. I bring this up because I could probably put together my own tips for global travelers in like manner. The first tip would be: Be Ready For Surprises. You will be surprised by the smells and the sounds. You will be surprised by strange sounds and strange animals. You'll be surprised by people, frequently. The money, the rules, the gestures, you're gonna be surprised by a lot of things. One of the ... read more

It's funny how things happen sometimes. Yesterday I logged on here to catch up on some travel blogs from my recent trips. Are there more important things I can be doing? Yeah, probably. But the travel blog was one of my favorite adventures and I love writing. There's no shame in doing something that gives you joy and causes no one any harm. While exploring the back-end features of travelblog.org (unfamiliar to me now after more than a decade away), I stumbled across the inbox of Private Messages. Convinced that I had never seen these messages before (about 40 of them), I spent several hours yesterday writing replies. Yeah, that was a pretty goofy thing to do. I wasn't able to get through them all in the day, and so I logged in again this morning ... read more

Does having the most coffee shops per square mile mean that you have the best coffee? Yes, there is a Starbucks, and usually one other competitor on every block. There are a few Peet's (our favorite), so there is hope for this city. But do they have really good coffee? Here is an "expert" at the Stranger: Coffee shops in Seattle function as social clubs, community forums, shared office space, and study centers. Even the most utilitarian place offers mind-boggling overheard conversation and fascinating people watching. In my opinion, Starbucks's coffee tastes burned and people look dumb walking around drinking coffee out of giant paper cups like they're constantly at a high-school kegger. Espresso is best sipped scalding hot from a ceramic cup without a weird plastic sippy-cup lid filtering it through a petroleum product. Try ... read more

Or as Nicholas Cage says to Sean Connery in "The Rock" regarding Connery's prison hair style, "it is a grunge thing!" This is what Fodor's says about Seattle grunge. Grunge means grime or dirt—which went on to define a new sound coming out of Seattle in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Fusing metal and punk rock, grunge incorporated fuzz effects, feedback, guitar distortion, and anguished lyrics. The music form jumped onto the scene with C/Z Records’ release of Deep Six in 1986, introducing the world to Melvins, Green River, Malfunkshun, Soundgarden, Skin Yard, and the U-Men. Sub Pop, another record label founded in 1986, signed up major grunge players including Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney; they’re often credited with kick-starting the “grunge movement.” Although the sounds have changed, grunge (along with flannel shirts and... read more

As the song says, "It never rains in California", but I retort, that "it always rains in Seattle." Tell me, why I would fly to Seattle in December, and go to a Niner-Seahens game on a cold and wet December night. I must have a very good reasons. Yes, my buddy, Big Bob, who moved to Idaho, will meet up with me for the Niner game. We were at the NFC Championship game in Los Angeles last January. If you thought that was crazy, sitting in the freezing cold and rain is even crazier. He even went to Green Bay to see the Cheese heads on the "Frozen Tundra" of Wisconsin last January. Though I have visited Seattle numerous times in the past, both for business and pleasure, winter is not an ideal time to visit. ... read more

We’ve become so absorbed in our travels, we left a few blanks in our blog, and now is a good time to catch up a little. The first place we really need to add information is about our stay in Lynden, because we really did enjoy our time there. The community and the surrounding area are filled with really nice people, and we had the pleasure and privilege to meet many of them. We’ve already written about some of the events we attended, so forgive me if I repeat anything, but our time in Lynden was very, very nice, and the people were a very big reason for it. When we first checked in to the Lynden RV Park, Natalie asked the lady at the desk for suggestions about restaurants, she suggested Burnt Ends, a barbecue ... read more

After 2 years of waiting, this day has finally come. A week ago, I decided to move up my trip 4 days so that I could add Tokyo to my itinerary. In doing so, I had to change carrier from EVA Air to ANA. This is my first time flying on ANA and from the reviews I have read, it is not quite impressive as EVA's Business Class. Upon boarding, the disappointment began as my seat was not thoroughly cleaned - crumbs and candy wrapping greeted me. So I flagged out one of the flight attendants, showed her my seat and she was shocked and embarrased. She and the lead flight attendant apologized and quickly took action. The Business Class section was only half occupied to my surprise though pleasantly as that meant less traffic going ... read more
