1st Stop North America » United States » Washington » Seattle By sabbytravelersApril 20th 2007 Our train loop allows travelers to get off 3 times in a trip. Our first stop was Seattle where we visited Pike Place, toured the underground and walked a lot! We also rented a car and drove north to the San Juan Islands for 2 days. It was extraordinarily similar to Maine with spectacular views in every direction. The cottage we rented was just 40 feet from the water and overlooked a tranquil little island, with British Columbia off on the horizon. Before leaving the mainland we passed thro... read more

After blitzing across America in 23 days, I am home. I am in serious food detox—trying to keep to a diet of Asian food, seafood (not fried), fresh produce, and green tea. I know I’ve scared some of you with the food I ate on the trip but I chose only to highlight (and take pics) of those dishes I thought would have the most effect. It worked. Hee hee. It’s also good to be back in the land of no-smoking in public places. The trip was fantastic. Cathy (as always) was a great travel buddy. She’s an excellent driver and has amazing directional sense, not to mention just being an all-around super kewl friend. The Road Chicks took the States and I’m glad all of you were able to join in the fun vicariously. ... read more

We made it to Seattle in one piece...we put our bikes together and rode around the city some. I've been slowly uploading some pictures to my flickr account, it's super slow. I want to write more but I'm really really tired. This time difference of only three hours is for real. So if you want to see some pictures, go to My Flickr Account...but for some strange reason a lot of them came out blue, I'm really not sure why... I'm also going to put up some pictures from our going away race and party. I was sitting next to the Sound today wondering what my wonderful friends in Philly were doing, and how much I wish they could be with me. Is Alice drinking a sparks? Is Michelle going "yeooow"? I always knew it, but ... read more

If today is any indication, I expect to have a terribly fun time this week dealing with Alaska Airlines. The schedule I have is unforgiving and Alaska hasn't exactly proved itself "reliable" in the last few weeks. It's really not fair to blame today on them but I'm going to anyways. I just feel like they've earned it. This trip started out with the obligatory "change your flight every day" phenomenon. The leader of our team called me last Thursday and asked me to move my flight from Monday to Sunday. We have been signed up for 6 cities in two weeks, capped off by $500-600 change fees for all my flights. Sunday was no good for me at all...Michelle was in San Francisco with a couple of her sorority sisters and wouldn't be back until ... read more

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to go on a cross-country road trip. My love for the open road began when I was young. As a child of the ‘70s, growing up in Los Angeles, my dad would pile the family into our 1970 blue Ford Torino (and later in the big bad Buick, which rode like a marshmallow) and we’d take off to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, the Central Coast of California, San Francisco, Las Vegas, wherever. I’m now living my dream and am on a three-week road trip from Seattle to Savannah and back. The goal is to hit as many states as possible, see cool stuff, be awed by nature, and visit great works of architecture. My fabulous friend Cathy and fellow road warrior is on ... read more

SeattleDave B 3/10/07 Helen and I got up around 7:00 and got ready. I fixed some pancakes as I needed to start using up the remaining food as I didn’t want to throw anything out and my US leg of the trip is quickly approaching the end. We quickly had breakfast and then headed to the bus stop so as to not deal with parking and the associated cost once we got down town. We had to wait for the bus for a little while and I was a little concerned about making it their on time as the most recent email I had received said any remaining seats would be given to those waiting in line. We got down their in plenty of time, but was not sure of the location. After looking around we ... read more

We eventually hobbled into South Dakota after two and a half days of driving and then straight to Walmart to get our driver’s side rear tyre replaced. After this slight setback we went to the famous Mt Rushmore to have a look at four of the president’s heads which are carved in stone in the Black Hills of South Dakota. After our initial shock that George Bush Snr or George Bush Jnr weren’t included we got down to some sight seeing. There wasn’t much to see other than the mountain. The presidents that make up Mt Rushmore are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. It is a very impressive American landmark and was probably just about worth the two and a half days drive. On our way out of South Dakota we stopped ... read more
