Cori and Emmanuel de Ricard

After living in Seattle Washington for 11 years, we have decided to pack up our bags and leave for new horizons, at least for the year. Our choice, Paris!! This was appealing for us because we will be able to return to Seattle with a direct flight if needed, we are close to family in the south of France and we are also very central in Europe which allows us to travel to England, Holland and Belgium with ease. This is also a prime time in the kid's lives to try out a new school without them hating us for the rest of their lives! After years of education at the French/American school, we are going to test out their skills and see if they can fit into the French Educational System.
We have left behind many people who mean a lot to us. We would like them to feel close to us and experience some of the things we are going through. I would also like to share our discoveries. There are so many hidden secrets in Paris and I would love to reveal them or at least entice our friends to come for a visit!

Seriously, did any of you see this year go by? The last time I actually wrote in this blog was almost one year ago. My intentions of being a regular blogger were good but it seems as though real life got in the way! Anyway, it's that time of year for catching up with everyone. I'm not sure why we decide to do this only once a year because we sure think of you a lot more than that. Today as I was sitting on the metro with Tatiana on our way to her theater class, two rather good looking men, dressed in black suites with ties, red shirts and Santa hats, blasted Diana Summer's "Hot Stuff" from their speakers. Tatiana and I looked at each other with a wondering eye and focused our attention on ... read more

We want to wish you all the best for 2010! We were very happy to hear from many of you and to receive your good wishes and each time it warmed our hearts! Although we were very happy to be in France for the holidays for the first time in 11 years, we were missing our friends and family that we often see. You were all in our thoughts and we hope that you had time to relax and spend time with family and friends. Since I last wrote, Tatiana celebrated her 10th birthday! Since the space at home is limited, we searched for options to accommodate 8 girls and came up with Aquaboulevard which is a gigantic indoor water park. A life size whale hangs from the ceiling as waves move the swimmers around and ... read more

Could it be the overly generous piece of 70% cacao Lindt chocolate that I had a little too late in the afternoon yesterday washed down by the full on espresso that keeps me awake at 3 am?? Maybe it's just the need to reconnect and let you all know we are alive! This sleepless night or "Nuit Blanche" (white night) as the French say, reminds of Paris's " Nuit Blanche which was held in October. This is a night when the city stays even more awake than usual and artists come out of hiding to show off an idea or a theme. Emmanuel and I put the kids to bed and went out for a stroll only to be swept away in the waves of human energy and joie de vivre! African steel bands marching down ... read more

Finally, we've got it under control and have it all figured out. The routine, that is. Four full weeks of school and work under our belt, still hard to believe. All of the mysteries have become crystal clear, well, kind of! One of our reasons for giving Paris a try was a change of pace and this we have managed to alter drastically. Instead of driving close to four hours a day, back and forth to school and activities, we now spend an average of 30 minutes walking back and forth to school and going to soccer practice. All that extra time! In my dreams I am visiting museums, discovering parks and rooting out cute boutiques. But alas, I must be serious and have started working with Emmanuel in earnest! It feels good! I actually feel ... read more

As I listen to the wind blowing through the trees and the pigeons cooing just outside our living room window, I still can't believe that we live in the very center of Paris! Over a week in our new home and we are settling in just fine! We are in the very famous and historical district of "The Marais" which is full of history and charm. The Bastille is directly East of us. Right now, discovering every nook and cranny seems impossible, but I am sure with time and some money, we will make our way around this enchanting neighborhood. When I start thinking about the fact that this is only one of twenty neighborhoods to be discovered, I become overwhelmed. Emmanuel and I wanted to simplify our lives and I can say that Yes, we ... read more

Well, I'm sad to say we have made our last stop on this world tour but did we go out with a bang! While in France we were frantically searching for a place to stay in Dublin only to find out that the weekend of our arrival was also the semi final for Ireland's Gaelic football teams. Time after time we heard "Sorry, all booked up that week." This was the first time on the trip where we actually wondered what we were going to do. Luckily we kept our cool and Emmanuel's rental savvy kicked in. A few emails later Emmanuel had found us a two bedroom apartment in a very nice residential area of Dublin right next to the Dart which took us everywhere we wanted to go. We were grateful for this rental ... read more

Two weeks in France with all the friends and family that we cherish is not enough time! The whole experience went by in a flash but with so many connections made. As most of you know Emmanuel comes from the town of Toulon which is between Marsaille and Nice on the Mediterranean. A land of beautiful weather and therefore lots of Nordic vacationing tourists. The mood is one of relaxation and festivals especially during the month of August when most of the country is on vacation. Soon after our arrival we left with Emmanuel's parents to their country home in Aveyron, just west of Montpellier. Going to the countryside in August is like one long continuous family reunion interwoven by social gatherings and accentuated by what the French do best...eat and drink! The tiny village of ... read more

Time has wisped us away to France where I am finally finding the time to write about our wonderful stay in Greece. Travelblog had a crash for about a week which didn't allow me to write just after our travels. By the way, if anyone has printed out South Africa, Reunion Island, or Egypt please let me know because either all or part of these entries have been lost and I would like to recover them. During this period we were already in France and we headed out to the countryside, west of Montpellier to Aveyron where we found ourselves in the calm and without internet access. Already back in Toulon I am stealing away for a few hours to catch up on all that has happened in the last weeks. As planned we met our ... read more

Well, we were in South Africa up until last night. I worked on the pictures on our way to the Johannesburg airport and had to leave the details until our arrival in Egypt. We are now in Luxor after a very long and exhausting journey. 4 hours of car to Joburg followed by waiting at the airport and a 7 hour night flight to Cairo!! Just shows you how huge Africa is! Once in Cairo we found out that our flight to leave in one hour (8am) was changed to 9pm!! Not good news for weary travellers! Anyway, we talked our way onto a noon flight and found a spot to squat until boarding. We are now in Luxor and have one night in a hotel before we get on our cruise down the Nile. ... read more

No, we are not in Madagascar but when I tried to enter Reunion Island travelblog did not recognize it and therefore I had to go with the next closest place. The fact that a well used travelblog site doesn't know about Reunion says a lot about how far away we are from everything! Imagine a small volcanic island in the middle of the Indian Ocean not far from the Tropic of Capricorn with a circumference of 200 km. On this island there are over 200 microclimates created by the various elevations that make up this tropical paradise. In only one hour you can go from the sandy beach up to La Fournaise which is an active volcano that erupted for the last time in April of this year. (This eruption actually cut the bottom of ... read more
