It was in the back of everyone's mind at the welcome dinner the evening prior, though nobody dared mention it. The rain was pouring on Saturday, and we were going to drag our poor international guests across Puget Sound and to an exposed shorefront park in this weather? We might as well have rebooked their flight home for Monday morning! We woke up to a brilliant surprise however... Sun! Our biggest concern turned out to be sun burn. We met at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal at a quarter to nine, or thereabouts, and proceeded to fill the diminutive walk on waiting area with rambunctious students primed for a day of adventure. This would be a harbinger of things to come for our fellow passengers on the state ferry Kaleetan. We made our presence felt on board ... read more

Portland came and went! It's beautiful and green! We seem to be taking the sun every place we go. But not in Portland! It was nice to see overcast! The people are really nice and super laid back! There are all types of people in Portland. For example when we were driving through Astoria we saw a young girl with bright purple hair on her bright green bike....then walking behind her was an older lady with long hair weird looking parachute pants and baggy shirt "earthy grandma" haha.... We spent some time with good friends. The congregation there was very refreshing and warm. We did little sight seeing...but mostly relaxed and sipped on our coffee! =)... read more

We've traveled about 3,500 miles so far of the 10,000 that we anticipate going. Ron figured out how to add a map to our entry. If you click 'fit route' on the map it will show our trip so far. This entry will be lots of pictures so be sure to scroll past the map. Right now our camper is parked next to two enormous pines at Deception Pass State Park. We'll be here total of 8 nights - a very long lay over for us right now. It will be nice to slow down a bit. The park is on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle. This park is so picturesque, it is like camping in a postcard. Towering pine trees, ferns, huge boulders. I don't think pictures will do it justice. This is the most ... read more

Here we are again, quite delinquent on any recent site additions. What can we say? We have been busy traveling on the 'Fahrt'. There has been some internet access issues but mostly our time has been taken up with sailing, running and hiking, eating ice cream, and watching seals, orcas, and lots of birds. Madison did manage to catch the only fish so far (it was ugly too). We left Anacortes on july 24th on the Seefahrt, this was our maiden voyage in winds 15-20 knots. The boat likes these wind speeds. We started off in the San Juan Islands, part of Washington state and bordering Canada. We made stops at several islands and locations, such as Cyprus, Obstruction State Park, Olga, Rosario, Spencer Spit, Shaw, Friday Harbor, Jones, Stuart, and Sucia. We stayed several days ... read more

So here are some pictures of the fawns and otters. The fawns have various stories, although recently they have been suffering from some sort of parasite that causes hair loss. We gave them Ivermectin, but one very obviously is showing no imrovement, so she may have to be shot again. As for the otters, one of them came in with his brother because their mother had been trapped and relocated (again - ILLEGAL and particularly inhumane during the spring months). The brother is the one I mentioned that we necropsied last weekend. This one made it, however, and another local rehabilitation center (Washington is full of these places - it's weird being in a state where people like animals) had a single otter that they sent over to be with our lonely boy since otters do ... read more

I've definitely been slacking off on the blogging for the past 3 or 4 weeks. This is mostly due to me not wanting to drive anywhere in order to preserve my car so it will take me safely back to Kansas, so I haven't seen much other than town and work. I want to go to the other islands, but the ferry landing isn't in town on Lopez or Orcas (Isle of the Sacred Mountain) so they require a car to get anywhere, and of course taking a car on the ferry costs more. Plenty of amusements exist within walking distance on good old San Juan Island, however. Today I went to a necropsy at the Friday Harbor Marine Biology Labs (an extension of the University of Washington). I didn't take any pictures because I thought ... read more

After the parade I ran away quickly to get to Lime Kiln Point State Park by noon so I could go on the tidepool exploration walk. I was the only one there, so the guide took me to a more secluded area which I never would have considered going to by myself. The "trail" included a bunch of rocks that we had to climb down and walking essentially up the side of a cliff. She did it in a skirt, though, so I felt like I was being a bit of a baby. Anyway, we saw some neat stuff.... read more

Well, I think the only people who don't go to the Friday Harbor Fourth of July parade are dead, so I figured I better go. Actually it was really fun and worth it, although I could have done without seeing every single firetruck on the island drive by slowly. After the parade was over, I drove out to Lime Kiln State Park and explored the tidepools. Pictures of the tidepools will have to wait until later. I don't know why I felt the need to take so many parade pictures, but I just wasted two hours of my life uploading them, so I hope someone actually looks at them!... read more

I take terrible pictures; I did not get the good photographer gene shared by my father and sister. But you should sort of get the idea. They look a lot better as thumbnails. Biggest news: There is a stray cat hanging out near the apartment. I've seen him out the window for a couple of days, but last night he was right on the porch. He is SO skinny; I fear it's a case like Emmett's where someone went away for the summer and just figured the cat could take care of itself. I didn't have any cat food on hand (oddly) so I gave him some tuna last night. I didn't let him eat too much because I didn't want him to get sick, but I bought some real cat food today. I'm going to ... read more

So I've been thinking a lot about the parallels between the San Juan Islands and the Land of the Green Isles (I think everyone reading this realizes the Land of the Green Isles is a fictional place from King's Quest VI). Here, there is still a ferry running between the islands, which is inconvenient because it costs money. I would much prefer a magic map obtained at a pawn shop, although I don't have a pearl or an insignia ring. Maybe I could try getting one for my high school class ring? I realize that in KQ6 the ferry was always there, but it is sort of like living in a computer game because sometimes the ferry is there outside the window and sometimes it isn't. If I was in a game where the ferry was ... read more
