Today is our last day around the Lake Chelan area so we said farewell to Don and Jane and a thankyou for their hospitality and home exchange. It has been a comfortable and relaxing place to be. We do recommend Home Exchange as an alternative to the usual way of travel. You get to meet new people and go to places you may not have considered. We certainly would not have considered coming here but for belonging to the huge world wide audience of Exchangers. You can choose non-simultaneous as we have or a direct swap. Requests come from all over the world and you can state your preferences on your own account whether you are interested or not. After a leisurely breakfast by the lake in the sun we walked up the road to Kelly's ... read more

Today was essentially a boat day. There are only two boats a day going up the Lake - a fast one and a not so fast. One would only give an hour at the destination so we chose the fast one up and the slow one back to give us 3 hours in Stehekin which still isn't enough but the best option. The Lake is a long 90 kilometres so we opted to drive up to Fields Point and catch it there saving an hour of the journey. When I consider the steep sided lake, they have an amazingly good road to 25 miles up then nothing from there on. It is wide and paved and certainly an improvement on what we're used to around our national parks. At Fields Point we joined the boat which ... read more

Today has been a day of exercise. We met Don and Jane at the house, adjusted the bikes, and set off up the Lake to the end of the road. At Fields Point turnoff we stopped for a catchup and I managed to get my foot stuck in the pedal and fell off. Not elegantly either. Lindsay and Don continued to the road end (2 miles ahead) while I went rock hunting with Jane (willingly or not) being educated all about intrusive metamorphic rocks. There was a pile of blasted out rocks so it was easy to check out pegmatite sills and quartz veins in the gneiss, schist and amphiboles. Interesting for me anyway. We all caught up again at Kelly's Store (Umbria Cafe) for an excellent coffee. The young woman there was most accommodating as ... read more

We started our day with a trip into Chelan to view some of the history of the area at the Museum. It is a small museum, well presented, and documenting much of what we have experienced in the colonisation of New Zealand with mining, logging and horticulture development but also including the Indian and trapping history. The latter were the major differences for us. There were Indian clothes made of animal skins, furs and beading. A huge collection of arrow heads and implements showed their stone age development and their local history in the area. On the immigrant side the fur trapping, guns, lake history were the major differences. The later history around 1900 onwards showed the development of the fruit industry followed by wine. More later on this. When you want a real coffee as ... read more

Excellent! We have sourced a great coffee location AND within walking distance. We didn’t know exactly where we were to go but did know it was a couple of miles (miles here) up the lake further so we figured after 45 minutes that Kelly’s Store must be it. It had a lovely sitting place outside right over the lake and the coffee was certainly up to scratch so we made the appropriate comments. We shall return. By the time we were back at the house it was midday and Don had left me a couple of geology books on the area to read. What an interesting location. I had seen the erratics, granites, basalts and marble along the way so it was great to put them into geological history. I would love to go out with ... read more

We had a comfortable night in our lovely room looking out over the Leavenworth Valley along the Wenatchee River. After an excellent breakfast of lemon soufflé, nectarines, grapes, sausage, fruit juice and coffee we said farewell to our most hospitable hostess at the Rohrbach B&B and headed down to the town of Leavenworth for a good look around. Even though the town has been created specifically for the purpose of reviving it, it has a most authentic German theme and obviously brings in huge crowds for the various festivals it holds. Three times it was voted Christmas Town of the year for the US. We left around midday and headed off towards Wenatchee, a town of 32000 along the Columbia River. We were surprised to find that along the entire route were vineyards and orchards of ... read more

Janine here - I have no idea what all this means, but for you fisherman out there, this is how the fishing was for Pastor's first day of sabbatical: The bite for the Laketrout here on Lake Chelan has been "OFF" one day and "ON" the next day in the Lower basin..The Pressure fronts that are moving in have been challenging along with all The Driftwood that has invaded our lower basin from the Meadow Creek Mud Slide. Today the Bite was real Slow the first hour and half then the wind calmed and the Laketrout started biting. We found the 9 Laketrout that we caught today off Minneapolis Beach in water depths from 130 to 180ft. The Ace Hi-Fly by Silverhorde was the Top Bait today. It was my Pleasure to have Pastor Chris Webb ... read more

Driving along the Columbia River staring at the white-capped peaks of the Cascade mountains was a beautiful way to start the morning. I met Joe at the launch by 6:30 and we were fishing by 7. It was a slow start for the first 2 hours, but I enjoyed taking in the scenery, learning how Lake Chelan was formed, and hearing Joe's story. Nearly 2 hours into our trip, we finally got a bite and I landed what ended up being the biggest fish of the day - 7 1/2 lbs. We caught a total of 9 and kept 7. I gave one to Joe, packed up 4 to take with me to Holden, and Joe will smoke the other 2 and have them ready for me to pick up on Memorial Day. After the adrenaline ... read more

Heidi, Ted, Max, Maik, Monika, Irena, Jochen and I were fortunate to be able to escape the rain, hail and thunderstorms in the west. We have spent the past few days here at Wapato Point on Lake Chelan. It has been both relaxing and active. We've spent time playing various sports including shuffleboard, tennis, mini-golf and teaching our German friends how to play baseball (at which Maik is a natural!). We've also had the chance to relax at the pool and stroll the grounds. Today we went on a hike on Echo Ridge for some spectacular views of Lake Chelan and the snow capped mountains. When we arrived and unpacked, Maik disappeared! It turns out that he had grabbed the basket for firewood and was out loading it up for us! This kid is a keeper ... read more
