Yesterday we took our first trial run on Caribee. Although we had done a test run before buying her, at that moment we were not controlling the boat, we were just passengers. This time she is our boat. We started the motor a day or so ago. It started right away, ran beautifully- it's ready to go. It was a fantastic afternoon. We put on the genoa at the dock because there was no wind. The sail is in good shape, we are pleased. Although it is a very big sail it is also light, so I am convinced that with a few more muscles I'll be able to pull it in even under load of heavier winds. I'll have to work on those muscles :) After securing everything on the boat and making sure all ... read more

We are in the water!!! Very exciting day for us. We had 14 seacocks to worry about, and none are leaking. We are relieved. Tonight Marty has just gone to get some food, we will rest and make some more plans, and tomorrow we open all the seacocks and test our plumbing in the daylight. We will also test the electric toilet system, flush out our big water tank because the water still smells like old vinegar (better than antifreeze I guess!), and get out motor going again after being winterized. We have batteries to install, more lights to change, and our dinghy and outboard motor to test too. Never a dull moment here... there will not be a weather window for about a week for us to move south, but we will not be bored ... read more

We are finally close to leaving Deltaville after about two months of non stop work on Caribee. The waste tank has been installed, we will test it tomorrow. Just that job alone took about two weeks, what a crazy exhausting project that was... mostly done by Marty. Trying to find place for the tube, cutting through bulkheads, fishing all the wiring for the tank monitor and the electric head, planning and building the platform for the tank in a geometrically challenging back locker, plumbing, connecting electricity..... the list goes on. It is amazing the work Marty has done for this waste system. I think that was the biggest project on Caribee, even bigger than stripping the bottom because there were so many different things to coordinate together. We hope all goes well on the test so ... read more

We have not written in a while, we have been busy taking all the tape off the boat, sealing windows and toe rails, putting back the anchor and chain, and most importantly running the tube for our waste tank. We finished it today, (day 3 of the project) after cutting holes through bulkheads and cutting up floors and bunks to pass it through. We will tackle the tank itself on the weekend with a little help from our guests.. my parents. They should arrive Friday around noon. We will work but of course we will also spend some relaxing time together, and we will be able to do that in a wonderful beach cottage that was offered to us by newfound local friends. It is an absolutely beautiful place right on the beach, it will be ... read more

The weather finally behaved and warmed up enough for us to get the paint on. It went well considering the boat was cold leading up to the painting and also she is in the shade of a big shed for most of the day. Caribee is now super white and shiny!! We have to add a stripe or two at some point and then we're done with painting. What a relief! We were very worried we might not get another weather window in time. It is getting late in the year, and even though Virginia can get some warm spikes they will be fewer and farther in between. We also have to leave time for the boat to cure at least 10 days before it can go in the water, so time was definately ticking. We are ... read more

Sad day for us. Simba died today peacefully in his sleep early this afternoon, only a half hour or so after we watched him have a drink, some food and then curl up in a ball on his favourite comforter. When Marty poked him to wake him up a half hour or so later ( good practise for older kitties so they don't sleep all day and keep us up all night!!) he was unresponsive. Although I am flattened by the unexpected loss of my loyal fuzzy partner, I am sooo happy he didn't suffer for even a second, and went the way we all wish we could- the best comfortable way for him and for me so I had no decisions to make on his part. How strange that Marty was just mentioning how he ... read more

Hmmmm Camp Caribee was a little less fun then usual this week, the inclusion of the Sandy game where you tie down all your belongings and pray for 3 days got old pretty quick. Boat rattling, people panicking ( the wal mart had bare shelves and they ran out of gas in many stations ) and the winds picking up all the time. All in all we were very lucky and blessed that nothing happened, the working guys at the yard did not seem to worry too much but then again they are not the ones that are sleeping in the boat when it is shaking like a leaf.... and they sleep well with a bottle of cheap burbon as a sleeping aid.... Needless to say the boat did not get painted last week and we ... read more

Quick update in case we lose power..... Sandy as of this morning has veered north and we are now out of the driect hit range. We hope the track stays this way! The last few days have been electric here- the yard even pulled out 15 boats yesterday until the winds got too strong and the yard was too full. Gas stations are out of gas, stores are out of supplies, boaters have stripped their boats of anything that can catch the wind. We took off all our canvas, outboard motor, lowered the boom since it is massive and tried to get everything streamlined. we have cleared all loose objects from around the boat and tightened all the pads. We have no other boats around us to worry about because we are still in front of ... read more

Hi again We are now finishing week number 4 here at camp Caribee, lots has been happening and many of you have seen the pictures now on facebook of the white primed boat. it has been a long week, with all the fairing and sanding and redoing the lines and redoing the tape it has been frustrating and a learning experience, I could say that we are now quite good at preparing hulls for painting. We will add that to our list of skills I guess. Today I am going to sand one side of the boat and one of the yard boys is going to do the other side, I really am up for the challenge but these guys do this all day long so we will see if my skills will be up to ... read more
