I'm a huge Texas history buff and have wanted to visit Frontier Texas for a while now. For many reasons the timing was just right this last Wednesday. I loaded up the three oldest grandbabies and off we went - Trevor 3, Audrey 7 & Blake 9. It's only a two hour drive due west down I-20. A few stops in town and on the road by 9 am. Stopped at the Ranger Hill Rest Stop - our program here in Texas to remodel or build new rest stops is working. So pretty and felt safe/secure. Made it into Abilene about 11:30 and had Subway for lunch. Then onto our first stop of the day. Fort Phantom Hill - We just made this a quick stop as it was already very hot. Most of the buildings ... read more

Well, like all good things, this summers journey to New England has come to an end and we are on our way home. We left Connecticut on Tuesday the 15th of October and headed west. Spent the first night in Johnstown Pennsylvania which was the same place we stayed our last night on the road in June when we were going to Connecticut. Took I-70 to Effingham Illinois where we had dinner with Linda and Roger West and their daughter, friends we were stationed in Germany with in the mid 70's. It's been almost 20 years since we were last together. It was great to get together again after all these years. From there we went to Mexico Missouri. Mexico is a small town in central Missouri where Sally grew up as a little girl. We ... read more

If I made a prioritized list of all of the states I wanted to travel to in the U.S., Texas would be at the very bottom of that list. But, on the top of my list of people to see is Juli “Juju” Ragan. Juli and I played Rugby together in Alaska the year before we both left, but long before that we were bosom friends. We had a long history of dressing in full body spandex outfits, singing karaoke, dancing our lives away, and supporting each other through some crazy situations. Here are some things you need to know about this girl: She is an American hero, serving in the Air Force almost four years; she has the best dog, Maude; her car has a mustache; the closest thing she eats to vegetables is drinking ... read more

Well folks, I will be off to Kenya here in about 700 hours! Can you say EXCITED????? Yes I am really excited to be doing what the Lord wants me to. Am I nervous? Yes! Who wouldn't be? But it will be fine. I have been to Kenya a number of times. The last one being last year in June. Wow! Did I ever have fun! I was able to read to the orphans a book in their language Kenya Sign language (KSL). I work in the US in a deaf education program, so that is where knowing the ASL (American Sign Language) comes in handy while in Kenya. Their KSL is similiar to ours with some thing different. Having the background in ASL allowed me to pick up some KSL varily quick. Watching the children ... read more

Well there is just under 2 months left until i head back to one of my favorite countries that ive ever wandered around: Thailand. People always ask me why do i love Thailand so much and for some reason its tough to answer. I can not just name one thing that makes me want to go back there again and again. I love everything about that country from the amazing beaches to the nice people and not to mention its extremely cheap. The food is amazing and it is probably in my top three of favorite kinds of food. Theres nothing better than buying some chicken on a stick on Khoa San Road and strolling up and down looking at all the tourists buy the things tourists buy. I am not a tourist. Backpackers are ... read more

Yesterday was my 23rd birthday, and today, the first day of my 23rd year of life, I began walking... A LOT! I started at KMo's place off of Campus Court in Abilene. She had been letting me sleep on her couch for weeks. I put on my pack and started to walk to a few key points in Abilene before I left. Starting with ACU (right across the street) to get a new school ID. Then to the Bank of America in the Enterprise building to cash a check from my grandparents. Then to the DPS by KMart to get a new driver's license. And because the Texas DPS is so incredibly efficient, I was only there for 5 hours! (note: heavy use of sarcasm) I think I finally got on the road and started hiking ... read more

June 19, 2010 (Saturday) I heard about an outdoor play which is performed in June every year in Albany Texas so decided to check it out. I called a friend (Leigh Ann) and asked her if she was interested in going. She was so we headed to Albany. The play is called Fandangle and has been performed for the past 72 years. There are about 400 cast and crew members, most of which are volunteers. Albany's population is about 2000 so most of the town is involved in some way. We had several hours before the play started, so decided to check out the town. The lady at the visitors center suggested we see the Old City Jail. It now houses an Art Museum. When the new jail was built, the city was going to ... read more

Hello Everyone The last two days have been very busy. Left New Orleans on Monday morning and here it is Thursday, and I am sitting in a hotel room in Albuquergue New Mexico! We drove through Texas in 3 days, stopping in San Antonio and Abilene. Visited the Alamo - I was fascinated by places such as "The Crockett Hotel" and "Crockett St." given that this was my mom's name. The actual site of the Alamo is very large and made up of several buildings that housed a mission which was attacked by the Mexicans. And I am proud to say that it was, most likely, one of our ancestors, who emerged as the "hero"! There are many artifacts from the era and the attack, including letters and other documents written by Davy Crockett. It is ... read more
