Recently, my husband and I were able to sneak away for a short trip up the coast of New England. Though there were stints of work in Philadelphia, we made the most of our time together and, as neither of us had ever ventured north of Virginia, we made it a point to see some of the tourist destinations that we had missed growing up. Two of our favorite places to visit were Newport, Rhode Island and Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. Though the coastline was similar to the beaches we were accustomed to in North Carolina, there was a crisper feel to the air up north and the sunsets were nothing short of breathtaking! We came away from our brief adventure determined to take our children back to those same places one day ... read more

We slept well enough awakening with a growing readiness for tomorrow when we will be embarking on the Voyage of the Vikings. This last day on the East Coast will find us in Rhode Island later this morning where the plan is to meet up with Rhode Island Ruth. Sharon met Ruth the first time in person on a HAL cruise on the Rotterdam (the same ship we’ll be boarding tomorrow) from Rio de Janeiro that went down to Antarctica and then on to Santiago in early 2008. She had met her online a couple of years earlier when Sharon took her first cruise (to New England) alone after her husband Jim died. Sharon was posting along the way and Ruth provided some very nice and supportive responses that helped her get thru her first solo ... read more

Build Day! We awake at 6:45am for a 7:30 departure to our build site. In typical fashion, we are all dressed and ready to go in the van and waiting on Chris. It only took until this very morning for NJ to realize that we are always waiting on Chris. Always. Which ensues in a raised NJ voice freak out, lol. We all (impatiently) await for him to lollygag out of the host and into the van--must be nice to be the last one out of the host and manage to score one of the best seats in the van. I pitch the idea of us getting tanks made since my good friend Amanda Seal just sent me a proof of artwork to approve. I send it out on the GroupMe to get a read on ... read more

**Unless a local has ridden on the roads you are about to ride on, never trust them when they say "its all downhill from here!" because then the joke will be on you when karma comes back to give you the exact opposite. This is what happened to us today.** This morning we woke up and our wonderful, gracious hosts were busy in the kitchen preparing a delicious breakfast for us. Once I got dressed and packed up my bag and took my bike outside, I went into the kitchen to try to help them prep breakfast. Though they said they didn't need help, I insisted and helped with a few things here and there. Breakfast is served buffet style and there is no shortage of food and snacks. We eat to our hearts content and ... read more

I awoke at 6:30 to the stillness of the boat. We were no longer moving; the vibrations of the ship had stopped. I went to the balcony curtains, opened them, and went out on to the balcony. We were anchored off Newport, Rhode Island, the port side (our side) of the ship was facing toward a bridge with a small lighthouse on the rocks below the bridge. The sun was just coming up and the morning fog was starting to burn off. It was cool to see the sailboats anchored in the harbor near the stern of the ship. Soon there was a knock at the door and I let in room service that we had ordered the night before. We ate breakfast on the balcony, and watched as the tender boats (the Crown Princess lifeboats) ... read more

Hello Everyone Thank you for travelling with us,have been away with Ruth and David to Boston and Rhode Island Newport,we had a fabulous few days away, arrived in Boston in the evening, dumped our stuff at accomodation and went down to the Harbour to spend the evening having a meal and refreshments. Next morning went to harbour again to take photos and more refreshments,we just missed the the protest rally that was held later in day, which was a relief to us. We then travelled to Rhode Island,on the way we stopped at a cafe where one of Ruth and Davids friends was playing the piano and singing He was brilliant,it was all for charity. The Next day we went to see ll the Newport mansions and went on a audio tour to the house called the Breakers built ... read more

Our rest time in Lowell has come to an end, and it is now time to get back on the road and get back to our wanderings. After a quick breakfast, we loaded up the bike and bade Lowell goodbye as we began our journey south. We will miss Elliot's Hot Dogs and the Owl Diner, but the weather is great and hopefully it can only get warmer as we begin our southern journey. Our first stop along the was is Sturbridge Village. There are interstates that lead there directly, but we stuck with the secondary roads as we were not in a hurry. There is no single secondary road from Lowell to Sturbridge, so we ended up with a wonderful ride on many small and winding roads through towns like Westford, Stow, Marlborough, and Hudson. ... read more
