Mileage – 204.3 Remember Pictures are at the end of the blog too. (ie most of them) We wake early, eat, pack and head out before the crowds. Now as you know from yesterday’s blog, we were near the airport, but we really didn’t know how near we were. Seriously, the view from our room is of the runway. There is a plane at the end of the parking lot but, we heard no planes during the night. Our first stop was Target to get our supplies. As we exited the van I see scratches that were not noticeable last night in the dark. So out comes the cameras to document the damage so that we won’t get charged for it… We got most of the stuff on our list and we filled our coolers (yes, ... read more

Susan and Pam meet me at SAS and we load up Susan’s van with my stuff and head off to the airport. I tell Susan and Pam I actually was driving out of my neighborhood this morning and realized, I didn’t have my phone. I was lucky I didn’t have to drive back too far. Well, I did forget the maps. Oh well, we will find some along our route as we know we will be in areas where we won’t have reception. I guess I was stuck on stupid this morning. We park at the extended lot and lugged our luggage to the shuttle. The airport was non-eventful, but our flight took off a bit late. No big deal, we made time up in the air. Susan and Pam told me about their adventures driving ... read more

Greetings from Astoria Oregon! Today was a great day for riding, a mediocre day for food and a questionable day for humans. I left Arcata at 7:00 AM and headed north on US 101. You may have noticed that quite a bit of this trip is on the 101. There is a reason for that. I've always wanted to ride this particular highway from it's southernmost point (East Los Angeles, CA) To it's northernmost point (Tumwater, WA). Hence the reason for the first several days of this trip. I stopped for breakfast in Orrick, CA at the only coffee shop that was open. The folks were nice and the coffee was hot, so I decided to order a cheese omelet. This is where things get strange. The omelet arrived just barely cooked enough to hold it's ... read more

We arrived here in Coburg, Oregon on Tuesday and settled in at Camp Marathon. We always enjoy staying here as we have made many friends here since purchasing our bus in 2013. We spent Wednesday visiting and catching up with everyone as well as driving around to some of our favorite spots. I took some pictures of all of the beautiful flowers that they have around here. I would go crazy with the flower baskets if I lived here. It is too hot at home to have them but the climate is perfect here for them to grow. We also went to our favorite fruit farm, Deterings. They have all kinds of fruits and vegetables as well as jams, pies, and canned items. It's kind of like a mini Casa de Fruta. We have some shopping ... read more

We just spent the one night in McMinnville, so officially, this is completing the second leg of our multi-leg tour (well over a dozen I imagine) and commencing with the third leg. We had our complimentary breakfast at the Comfort Inn. We had a couple hours to kill in the room before we needed to check out. Today, we only need to drive to Portland, and we hadn’t much planned. Shirley was to be back at GenTog today, so we took our time getting packed, and moved our luggage down to the Jeep just before our 11 AM check-out time. On the way to Portland we decided to stop at Sherri’s Restaurant, a popular chain in Oregon that features wonderful pies. I chose the “Trio” which combines a sandwich/quiche, soup/salad and a slice of pie. I ... read more

We awoke to the sun filtering into our lofty abode, with the faint sounds of surf rushing to shore and a crisp breeze rustling the blinds as it refreshed us. We started cleaning up and rearranging things to be sure that we repacked everything later in the morning. It was then that I noticed that Sharon was mostly already packed while I still had much to do. Sharon spotted several deer next door, which seem to have an affinity for the garden flowers to be found there. “There are three, no four, I see three, no there ARE four!” Sharon exclaims. “Shoot them,” Sharon orders me as I’m about to do my morning Sudoku. Sharon claims that “she hasn’t had time” to keep up with our daily challenges, so I’ve racked up a nice little streak ... read more

The plan was to take Shirley to attend a Sunday Mass at the small Catholic Church on Rockaway Beach where she’d been a regular parishioner when she’d lived on the coast and also where they had the funeral for Sharon’s Dad; and, then to proceed back into Tillamook and have breakfast at the Pancake House. We’d all eaten there before and enjoyed its homey small town atmosphere. There was the option of going to the first mass at 8:30 and follow that with breakfast; or, to eat first and then attend the second service. We got up early enough to go with the first option. It was a bit of a drive to get out to the church, and already people were arriving at the church; still, we were able to get a primo parking space ... read more

The Pacific Shore has a later sunrise than we experience in Vegas being farther east and in the same time zone. Sharon got up more than once during the night to check on her mom downstairs. And every new noise seemed to spawn the automatic “What was that?” How am I supposed to know what that was? After all, I was sound asleep. We went to a local diner for breakfast; but, four of its five tables were already full, and the fifth was a tiny table for two. The waitress estimated a twenty-minute wait, with no place to wait and especially nowhere for Sharon’s Mother to sit. There was another café just around the bend; but, we were up for a coastal drive and drove a few miles south on 101. The GPS said that ... read more

Our Alaskan Adventure begins with a belated Mother’s Day Weekend on the coast of Oregon. Our neighbor showed up to pick us up, a few minutes early; but, just as we’d brought our bags to the curb. She had warned us that she’d taken the “Multi-Gen” room in her house as her room, both because the master bedroom was much too big to suit her (reading between the lines means it was much too big of a job to clean to suit her) and besides, her room at the front of the house allows her to be the Mrs. Kravitz of the neighborhood. She’d called just after our alarm awoke us and I answered asking if this was our Uber driver confirming our pickup. We got to the airport, quickly dropped off our checked bags breezed ... read more

Geo: 44.9332, -123.043Buonasera:Somewhere over the Atlantic right now, 3499 miles out of Atlanta. On the way home. Yea! First food service on this Delta flight just completed. Had pasta for lunch . . . Ha! Couldn't get enough in Italy, I guess. Goo Goo Dolls on the iPhone. Landed in Venice 10 days ago wide eyed and ready to explore places not seen or experienced before, except for a one-day trek on the trails and rails of the Cinque Terre five years ago during our trip to Florence.Had four wildly different experiences in the four places visited. It was like four separate mini-vacations, connected by train rides.Venice was intriguing; wouldn't go so far as to call it romantic. Its canals are its lifeblood, spirit, and intertwining thread.
