Today was mostly driving, with a little sightseeing thrown in. I hated to leave the coast, especially since Portland is under an excessive heat watch starting tomorrow, but I wanted to check out some things in and around Portland. I left the very chilly coast and headed back the same route I had come in on. I really enjoyed driving along Highway 6 through the Tillamook Forest. The road is never very steep and it winds through the hills with green trees all around. I don't know the highest elevation in this area, but the one sign I saw said 1500 feet. It was still cool and cloudy through the forest and that made for a nice drive. My first stop of the day was Oregon City, home to the terminus of the Oregon Trail. Now ... read more

Today was my last day on the Oregon Coast and I decided to head south again to see a whale one last time. The day started out very chilly and foggy and I thought it would never clear up. Most of the drive to Newport was through the mist on the 101. I stopped at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Park again to check out the tidal pools. The pass I bought the other day was actually good for three days so I was able to get in without paying again. Unfortunately, the tide pools were still closed. I didn't see any seals on the beach, but maybe there was one just out of view. The whole rest of the area was pretty well covered in mist so I wasn't able to see very far offshore at ... read more

I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do today, other than I was going to drive north. I thought I would go all the way up to Astoria, but I never made it past Cannon Beach. This morning it was quite cold and cloudy. I had some guests out in the water to watch while eating my breakfast, two sea lions! They were right up by the shore looking for fish I suppose. A nice start to the morning. I headed north from Tillamook on the 101. Here the road winds along Tillamook Bay with some nice green hills on either side. Beautiful scenery, even with the clouds! There are plenty of pullouts for checking out the views and I would recommend stopping at several. Most have information signs about the area and most ... read more

Every time I travel to an ocean, I always say "this time I'm going to see a whale" and every time I'm let down. Yes, I saw some way far off in Hawaii once, but they were far off dots on the horizon. I want one to be close enough to see the size and beauty of it. Today, my whale dream became a reality! There are so many things to see and do along the Oregon coast so its hard to pick and choose when you have limited time. I decided it would be a good idea to head south again to try and find the elusive whale. All the guidebooks and area magazines say the resident whales hang out around Depoe Bay, about an hour and a half south of my hotel. I found ... read more

Today was spent following the Three Capes Scenic Loop. I'm not sure why it's a loop since it runs north to south and is not a circle, but there are three capes and it's scenic and we'll leave it at that. Being on central time, I woke up at a normal time for me of 5:30, which is only 3:30 out here in Oregon. Not much to do that early in the morning so I dozed in bed and listened to the waves. Eventually I got up and had breakfast. This hotel does not offer breakfast so I brought my own oatmeal cups and got juice at the store, which is enough to fuel me for a morning of exploring. I took Highway 101 south to Pacific City rather than drive the scenic loop route so ... read more

Heading out on a week-long vacation to Oregon, one of the few states I have left to visit. The problem with this trip was deciding where to go, as every part of the state had something of interest to me. In the end, I decided to spend the bulk of my time on the northern coast and the last few days in Portland. I'm hoping to see lots of beautiful views, lighthouses, cheese factories, cute beach towns, giant bookstores, gardens and maybe even a whale if I'm lucky. All this in a little over 7 days! I was finally able to find flights that worked with all the airline miles I have so am flying basically for free both ways. United to Portland on August 26th and then American back by way of Phoenix on September ... read more

I can now cross another state off my list as I have made it to Oregon! I'm very much looking forward to recharging my batteries out here and i can feel it happening already. My wonderful sister took me to O'Hare early this morning for my flight. I knew this trip was going to be good when my gate was right after I came through security. How often does that happen! The flight was an uneventful four hours and some change. The descent into Portland was pretty cool with the mountains on either side of the plane. I don't know which one was Mt Hood, but they were all beautiful. The Portland airport was quiet and easy to navigate. I made my way to the rental car counter, checked in and even got a free upgrade ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Baker City August 21st 2017

Lähdettiin liikkeelle jo klo 3. Ajettiin Baker Cityn ohi etelään ja pysähdyttiin paikalle, jossa oli jo auto tien poskessa. Näkyi tähtitaivas, Venus kirkkaana. Lämmintä oli vain 7 astetta. Monta tuntia odottamista. Paikalle ei tullut muita. Käytiin jututtamassa läheisen auton kaveria. Hänkin oli Seattlesta. Marko otti osittaisesta vaiheesta kuvia kameralla zoomilla pimennyslasien läpi. Peitin oikean silmän lapulla, jotta sillä näkisi paremmin täydellisen vaiheen aikana, joka alkoi klo 10.24. Pimennys näkyi hienosti pilvettömällä taivaalla. Katsoin pimennyslaseilla aurinkoa, kunnes se peittyi kokonaan. Sitten paljain silmin koronaa. Ehdin nähdä Venuksen ja pari tähteä. Sitten kaikki oli ohi turhan nopeasti. Lähdimme heti paluumatkalle. Alussa oli ruuhkaa tietyön takia. Kävimme kasinolla lounaalla. Colombia-joen ylittävä moottoritie oli poikki. Piti kiertää idempää. Lisäksi Seattl... read more

We were all very worried about the predicted apocalyptic traffic before and after the eclipse, on top of the usual morning rush hour traffic. Portland hadn't seemed crowded while we there so I'm not sure where all the "added millions of people" were hiding. Just in case, we still got up early. My dad wanted us all to be in the "path of totality." He and my stepmom (and now my daughter) were all camping in their RV in Albany. I didn't want to risk going so far and then back with all the crazy traffic AND a toddler. So we agreed to meet in the middle. Woodburn had a large park with a playground and was reportedly allowing eclipse viewing according to the internet (and a bbq I never actually saw happen). David and Cory ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Pendleton August 20th 2017

Heräsin klo 5. Päästiin liikkeelle klo 6.30. Marko halusi ehtiä ajoissa ennen ruuhkia. Tankattiin auto sillä seudulla, jossa oli kuvattu Twin Peaks. Pysähdyttiin kerran kuvaamaan ja kerran vessan takia. Majoitus oli varattu Pendletonista, josta jatketaan aamulla pimennysvyöhykkeelle. Oltiin perillä jo klo 12. Lounaalle. Marko osti kameran. Hyödynsin kaupan wifiä. Hotelliin ostin 3 dollarin wifin, jota saatoin käyttää vain yhdessä laitteessa. Valitsin tabletin. Pulahdin uima-altaassa. Illalla käytiin näköalapaikalla mäen päällä ja kasinolla intiaanireservaatissa. Siellä seisova pöytä. Siitä sai vielä yli 50-vuotias 10 % alennusta.
