Day 7 - We were a little late leaving Klamath Falls today, as when we purchased out National Parks pass in Bakersfield, the lady got the cards mixed up, so we had to visit the forestry office early to get it sorted. We were helped by Joan, great lady, who helped us out of trouble, so we left her with an Australian tea towel with our thanks. She thought it was terrific. So once on the road, we headed for Crater Lake. The temperature was down to 49*F at its lowest as we climbed the mountain to 8500 feet. We had our extra shirt and winter gloves on. Nifty had his heated vest and heated grips on, so I insisted he lead today, least he could do seeing as he was warmer than Ange & I. ... read more

I thought I'd start this blog entry with some excuses.....or explanations at the very worst! Please excuse any spelling or grammatical errors in these blogs, as I write after a long day on the road, a few bourbons & a feed and man fingers with a small keyboard! I will be referring to temperatures & distances in Fahrenheit and Miles, so if you wish to convert, use Mr Google, he is your friend! Also, please don't forget to click on the images for a larger view. On my last entry, I mentioned that we were heading off to dinner at the Branding Iron Restaurant, well let me say, what a great dining experience. Excellent service by our server, George, who gave us the low down on their specials and all the good stuff. Clam Chowder to ... read more

We made it to the Pacific Ocean today! We started the day in Yuba City, California and arrived In Newport, Oregon just after sunset. We drove through the beautiful Central Valley region of California, enjoying the lush, green orchards of fruit and nut trees. It was amazing to see the contrast between the bright green, irrigated rice paddies and the dry, golden fields of grasses native to this chapparal climate. We drove through this landscape until lunch time when we began to enter the mountain passes near the beautiful Mt. Shasta and continued to wind through southern Oregon toward the coast. Our first glimpse of the ocean was at Hobbit Beach where we stopped for dinner. It‘s hard to believe that less than a month ago we were camping with friends at Cape Henlopen on the ... read more

Hard to believe we've been gone ten days. After an overnight in Mammoth, we stopped in Tahoe and are now in Bend. Crown Villa RV park is a step up from our usual parks (see the pictures). Along the way we've hiked to an alpine meadow, followed the river in Bend. Today's adventure - we washed clothes. Cool laundry - takes credit card and will notify you by text when wash/dry is done.... read more

" And then there is the most dangerous risk of all - the risk of spending your life not doing what you want on the bet you can buy yourself the freedom to do it later." Randy Komisar Routing Seattle- Ocean City SP- Nehalem SP- Carl G. Washbourne SP and Harris Bay SP. Distance: 912 kms. Total distance to date: 4300 kms. Once again applying travel logic to thinking, it seemed to make eminent sense that heading south on Memorial Day would “work” as many people would be heading home from the south where the holiday week end had been spent. A good call as the compass, after being firmly stuck in a northerly mode, spun around and HW 5 South was confirmation that we had the direction correct. The basic plan was to allow “Doris” ... read more

" I travel a lot; I hate my life disrupted by routine." Caskie Stinnett. Route travelled: Yakima to Seattle. Distance: 228 km. Total distance to date: 3388 km. Back on the road after surviving the Yakima mosquito menace, it was time to ponder the journey thus far. A total of 3160 kms chalked up and we had travelled through and seen a tiny fraction of this vast country. But here’s the thing. Many Americans we had chatted to up to this point hadn’t been anywhere near some of our destinations. With the striking, flat open vistas surrounding us as we edged towards Seattle, I had time to reflect and came to a simple conclusion. The best way to truly see and experience a country, it’s beauty and it’s people, is to undertake an RV (Recreational Vehicle) and ... read more

As expected the weather on the Oregon coast is poor but we nevertheless manage to have a good day here with some excellent wildlife viewing even if it isn't the best day for outdoor activities. Just south of the appropriately named Pacific City and right by the road is a blowhole and with the sea rough today it is blowing nicely. Further south we stop off at Cape Foulweather which was named by Captain Cook after encountering stormy weather here. The weather today isn’t great for views but we do catch a glimpse of 2 grey whales cruising just off the head. We pay entry to see the Yaquina Head area. The lighthouse has tours but these are all booked up but we walk around the headland and see the discovery centre which has some interesting ... read more

Although everyone thinks it rains all the time in Portland we have a relatively dry day here, and it’s not until late afternoon when we need to don our rain jackets. We hear it isn’t actually as wet as they make it out to be and it’s become a bit of a myth the Portland folk like to peddle so to keep away all those southern sun seekers. We have come here via the Columbia River gorge where we found another boondocking site to pull up deep (well 5 miles) into the state forest. It’s certainly not the best time to tour Washington, many of the attractions are not yet open for the season and the main appeal of the area are the outdoor activities which the current weather rules out. We pull up for petrol ... read more

I left the Canyonland part of Utah and moved on to the Needles area, the hiking was fantastic, met a lot of interesting people, there is something very peaceful about the scenery here I would like to come back and spend more time. Went to Mesa Verde next in the south west corner of Colorado, this was the home of the poabloen indians about 800 to 1000 years ago, they had an amazing culture with agriculure, livestock and a rich heritage of weaving and pottery and then they all moved away, why? The buildings they constructed were amazing, and the fact that there are still remnants after all this time is a testiment to their construction. Went on then to a small town in Utah called Bluff that was founded by mormen pioneers after the most ... read more
