Geo: 45.5118, -122.676Day started with word of a flight delay, which might have helped our navigation through the Portland morning commute, but cramp our connection at JFK. Then, on way to PDX, there's a crash on I-5 that results in 45-minute delay, so -- thanks to Madame GPS -- we rerouted up the scenic 99E back way through Woodburn and Oregon City. Once in the air, though, it was smooth sailing through JFK and onto Prague. After a sleepless overnight flight, we're reminded how much we don't enjoy red eye flights! Next stop, the Czech Republic.... read more

Geo: 45.0148, -123.016Happy sunny afternoon from Salem, Oregon! (Dzień dobry! in Polish)We're packed and leaving on a jet plane in the morning for our Eastern Europe adventure. With the heat wave this year, and a newborn in tow, we spent most of the summer cooped up indoors... can you say "cabin fever?" We desperately needed to get away for a change of pace, a change of climate, and a change of scenery. Although we had talked about visiting Portland for what seemed like forever, it took me by surprise when Victor booked our flights to go, because it was so spontaneous and last minute! Even though this was our first time in the Pacific northwest region of our country, we instinctively knew we would love Portland. And with it's location being only a short 3 hour flight away, it was a perfect first time trip to make with our little baby girl. Portland, in my opinion, is a very impressive place. Geo: 45.7056, -121.52After finishing our hikes at the Clarnounit, we drove on to Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge and our hotel for the next two nights, the Westcliff Lodge. The lodge was originally the Vagabond Lodge when I made the reservations but changed its name a few weeks before our arrival. We had gotten an e-mail announcing the name change, but I missed it and Anne, though she remembered the e-mail, couldn't remember the new name. So finding it was a little challenging but after searching for a bit and actually asking for directions, we arrived and checked in. It turned out to be a very nice place with several buildings built right on the banks of the Columbia River with some really pretty views. Our roomwas on a ground floor of one of ... read more

Geo: 44.4683, -119.535Checking out of the motel on Sunday, wedrove back through Redmond and on to the Painted Hills, one of three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We hiked on several short trails of one mile or less through picturesque multicolored hills that apparently contained fossils of various types, though we saw none at this unit. After seeing all we could of the Painted Hills, we drove on to our lodging for the next night, the Fish House Inn and RV Park in the town of Dayville, OR. The Fish House Inn is named more for the decor than any other reason. It was a nice place with all we needed for one night though we had to rush to get dinner that evening. We arrived around 3:30 PM and were told ... read more

Geo: 44.2911, -121.548Since we had already done Smith Rock State Park and had no desire to visit it again, we moved up our plans to hike another section of the Pacific Crest Trail. This trailhead was about 20 miles west of the town of Sisters at the summit of McKenzie Pass on Hwy 242. The highway, also called the McKenzieHighway, passes through a large lava field that flowed from two volcanoes, Belknap Crater which erupted 1,700 years ago and Little Belknap which erupted only 1,600 years ago. The Dee Wright Observatory is in the middle of this lava field about a quarter of amile before McKenzie Pass. It is a structure built using the lava rocks that consists of a small room atop a mound of the lava. The room has view ports through which one ... read more

Geo: 44.2728, -121.173After our 13 miles of pretty exhausting hiking the day before, we checked out of the lodge on Thursday morning and drove on to our next destination, Redmond, Oregon, and what we thought would be a fairly short, easier hike in the nearby Smith Rock State Park. Smith Rock is a rugged section of an ancient volcanic caldera that is billed as one of Oregon's seven natural wonders and a mecca for rock climbers. The Crooked River runs along the base of the volcanic ridge that rises 1,000 feet above the surface of the river. It is quite scenic but the anticipated “short, easy” hike turned out to be anything but. We stopped at the visitor center and asked about the trail. The one we were interested in was called the “Misery Ridge Loop” ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Timberline Lodge August 16th 2016

Geo: 45.3308, -121.71Our flight left GSP at 5:30 AM, which meant getting up at “0 dark thirty” on Tuesday for the drive to the airport. The early departure from home allowed us to arrive in Portland around 11 AM (PDT) and then drive on to the Timberline Lodge where we would spend the next two nights. The author of the book “Wild” had described the sections in Oregon in such a way as to make the trail seem like a good one for day hikes, with relatively easy access to scenic sections at several points . The most promising was access from this iconic, historical Timberline Lodge on the south flank of Mount Hood where she had rested overnight before her final 50 miles to the Oregon/Washington border where she ended her hike. The trail crosses ... read more

After leaving Lake Tahoe we ride north for a full day and we still hadn't got out of California. Admittedly we did miss one of our turns, which fortunately led us onto an even better road up through the mountains (thanks Sally!), and we did stop for a swim and a picnic of hotdogs and pie by a beautiful lake. But still - this is a big state. We stop for the night at Burley, a key criteria for choosing our hotel being its proximity to the laundromat. At this stage of the trip, clean motorbike jeans are a real luxury. An early start next morning and by mid-morning we have finally made it. We're in Oregon. Maybe I watched too many Wild West movies on a Saturday afternoon when I was a kid, but for ... read more

After a nice night of sleep, I got up and drank coffee while watching two birds play in the bushes near my tent, I tried to focus on them and not think about the great unknown that lay in front of me. I had spent several weeks before my trip looking through tourist guides and internet forums, cataloging potential places to stay and things to see, starting with the northern-most section and working south. I had planned through Honeyman Park, and then simply run out of time. The entirety of my plan for the rest of Oregon was "head south". Before I did that though, I needed to head north. Rather than head for the next town, I backtracked to Florence under a misting rain. The first task of the day, as with so many mornings ... read more
