I have two days until I leave for Spain. I have packed my bags and I am now waiting for the day to leave. I really want to get over there and enjoy the country. I look forward to seeing a new country. I am going to keep a better record of what I am doing this time around, so do not worry. I have skype there I am pretty sure. Other than that, make sure that you subscribe to the page and get the latest on my travels. I have no clue how often I will blog, but it will not be enough to get in the way of my fun. I guess the first blog is going to be in Spain. Its going to be fun. Until next time,... read more

Today was yet another driving day, however we had a nice stopover in Charleston to break up the day. We arrived in Charleston around 10.30am and just wandered aroud for a while. I ended up buying a pair of shoes that were on sale, and also a University of South Carolina Gamecocks hoodie, which I promised Jaclyn I would buy while in South Carolina. There wasnt really much time to explre the town, so I spent a bit of time chilling out in the park before I headed back to the coach. Charleston is such a pretty town, in fact all of the little towns along the east coast have been really nice, I wish we could have stayed there longer. Our drive to Raleigh wasn't meant to be long, but it was very long due ... read more

On arrival at Washington Airport, I took delivery of an impressively large and sharp-looking red Pontiac, definitely an upgrade from what I had booked. I drove this diagonally south-west across Virginia and (without adequate maps) down into Tennessee, at one past Dollywood. On Easter Saturday, it seemed like a good idea to get back to Virginia, so I had a day of driving the longest distance I’ve ever done (beating Warwick to Arbroath the previous autumn by 6 miles). At the north end of North Carolina, a pebble flicked up from a vehicle in front and I watched as it sped towards my windscreen. Had the glass given way, I wouldn’t be writing this! In the event a small crack appeared at one edge of the screen and I drove on. Overnight it snowed and by ... read more

On the last day of being in Beijing, we started off our day by visiting the Bird’s Nest; the Olympic stadium that housed the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Building for the most part is exactly what it seems like on TV. It was still really cool to be there and I enjoyed seeing the stadium. The better part of being in Olympic Park was seeing the Water Cube. The building was cooler to be in than the bird’s nest. The inside had eateries (I had way too much ice cream), a water park, and the pools of the Olympics. One of the pools you can swim in so a lot of our group went there. It was really something inside. Would like to know if the water park was there during the Olympics, ... read more

North Carolina Museum of Art I spent today in only one site, but it is a very important one: The North Carolina Museum of Art. This museum is very unusual in that it is owned and run by the state. It may be the only state art museum on this scale in the US. The museum currently covers two buildings. The older one is an international style brick box built in the 1960s. It reminded me of a well decorated office building. The much newer building is a high tech warehouse. There are very few permanent interior walls. The ceiling is covered with oddly shaped skylights that light the galleries naturally. All of the walls are white. It reminded me quite a bit of Dia Beacon (see ). It is 9:22 pm on Monday night...Steve and I are doing laundry, packing and attempting a "quick" clean of our home. My pile of clothes to bring is much larger than Steve's few items. But no worries, I am set with kleenex to use in the public restrooms! : ) A couple of more coca-colas and we should have our packs all set to go. Joleen will be arriving at our place in the morning to bring us to the airport. Stay tuned...... read more

It was a good plan - leave the house at noon, make the 5 1/2 hour drive to Raleigh, check in to the hotel, find someplace nice for dinner ... Well, we left home at 2:30pm (we got carried away doing 'last minute' yard chores we should have done a few days ago!). Immediately the GPS warned us of a 2-hour delay on I-95 south of DC. So, we took the non-highway route for the first 2 hours of the trip. Once we got back on the interstates we made pretty good time, rolled into Raleigh at about 8:30pm. Found the first suitable-looking restaurant (since we were not very suitable for any place 'nice'). Now it is 10pm, we are checked into our room, and we'll have no trouble sleeping tonight. There's a restaurant across the ... read more

I am leaving for Ghana in 21 days and could not be more thrilled about it. I will be leaving from Raleigh, go up to NYC, then take a lovely 10 hour flight straight to Accra, Ghana. I have done most of my preparations for the trip but still have some last minute things to do. I just wanted to test out the block and make sure it would work for my trip. Hopefully I will be able to type up a blog everyday but it depends on my internet time and such. I will probably be on facebook occasionally, have a skype account, email, and this to communicate. I'm looking forward to this experience and everything I will be learning about the people there and about myself. Hope you enjoy my blog during my journey. ... read more

Day Twenty Five 9 March 2010 Location: Charleston, Wilmington & Raleigh Hotel: Marriott Hotel, Charleston & Marriott Hotel, Raleigh We awoke early as we had a long day of driving ahead of us and we wanted to see a little more of Charleston before heading up the coast. The night at the Marriott had been enjoyable and comfortable. I often stay at Marriott hotels when I travel for business and I have always been satisfied with the rooms and staff. It was also nice to have a more suitable bathroom and amenities that were not present at the Disney World Resort. Check-out was a breeze and we loaded our bags into the car and were off towards the historic district of Charleston which we had visited the night before. We managed to find parking, this time ... read more
