Leaving DC, for our last drive of the trip, we headed into Maryland (where we ate an amazing last breakfast in a really old diner in Jessup). After driving through Baltimore we crossed the northern tip of Delaware and into Pennsylvania where we skirted Philadelphia and crossed into New Jersey at Trenton (where we said goodbye to two of our group). We arrived in New York in time to grab an early curry with the rest of the group and say our goodbyes...sob! Yesterday evening (Sunday), after taking a cab to our hostel, the seven of us who were still in the city met up for an evening walk, taking in Times Square, Broadway, Central Park (best done at night in a group of 7!) and the Rockefeller centre (where people were ice-skating). We said goodbye ... read more

Monday morning I woke up, after sleeping in past my intended wake up time, quite sore from the miles we walked the previous day, but refused to let that hinder me from walking the same amount or more for the second day in a row. My Swiss friends were off to work and so I was solo today. I arrived at the same central bus station as the day before and felt I had good bearings right away. I headed the opposite direction from my walking tour the day before, planning a walk in the general direction of MOMA, which was my final destination. The first sight of the day was Bryant Park with its lunch time ice skaters enjoying some outdoor exercise; there was a mix of people enjoying the opportunity, including those dressed in ... read more

By my second "i'm-going-to-see-everything-this-darn-town-has-to-offer-just-you-try-and-stop-me" day, I'd managed to figure out the ferries and the piers and the times and the locations of the whole thing. So I gave the cruise another shot. With the Circle Line ferry leaving from its pier at 12:30, I had my arrival timed to perfection. The Law of the Sod, however, decrees that when a good idea has been had by one person, millions of others will also have been blessed with said good idea, and so all shall descend upon this same little pier at the same little time in order to bombard the humble 'sailors' with their presence. You're sensing my joy right now, I can tell... So the queue was huge, and after I'd stood in one line to buy my ticket, I then stood in a larger ... read more

After a bout of freezing-get-your-coats-out-folks-we're-snowed-in-til-March weather, it's suddenly turned really warm again. I can wander freely around the city wearing a jumper and still be warm (note: yes, this is in addition to other clothes. No silly comments please!). This was of course remarkably handy when it was decided that Saturday was going to be a night out on the town, venturing out to 40-40, the favourite haunt of my flatmate Lydia. I'd heard rumours of ghetto-like suuroundings and that I would be the whitest person there, but after having survived the Kings Pharmacy Ball earlier on this year, I thought I'd give it my best shot (after all, I did learn how to dance to bhangra). That didn't really happed though. The plan was that Kate, Jenny, myself, Kate's friend Cecily from school (she was ... read more

I was traveling to New Jersey for work, so I decided to take a couple of extra days to tour Manhattan while so close by. Conveniently my hotel in Secaucus was near a bus route that was a 30 minute ride into Manhattan’s Port Authority bus station. While waiting for the bus Sunday mid-morning I met up with three Swiss men there on a marketing business trip, which were staying at my same hotel in N.J. and also took an extra ‘free’ day to tour Manhattan. They had no specific plan however for seeing the city, and since I had some ideas and a loose plan, we decided to hang out together for the day. It was great to have some fun and interesting traveling companions and made the evening much more enjoyable! The day was ... read more

Ok, so it was a round-trip of Manhattan island, but considering all of the communities and the ethnic microcosoms crammed into that 23 square miles, it's almost a trip round the world. I decided sometime in the middle of last week that I'd been spending far too much time piddling around New Jersey and not enough time actually seeing Manhattan itself. Sure, I spend every single day traveling in and out of the place, walking past the Empire State and the Chrysler buildings, but for some reason I just don't feel like sightseeing at 8:15 in the morning. Or 6pm for that matter (it's dark by 4pm now anyway, boo!). Instead I decided to dedicate my precious weekend to the pursuit of looking like a geeky tourist and seeing a bit more of this infamous city. ... read more

For all of the press it gets, the Empire State Building is an alright building. It's tall, it's more elegant than some of the 1960s monstrosity skyscrapers around the world and there's definitely an air of something special about it. The throngs of tourists alone are a little clue there. But you could quite easily miss it as you walk past. Well, if you can fumble your way though the queues. I've not been up it yet. I'm waiting for a cold winter's day that'll make my cheeks ruddy and raw, but also guarantees bright blue skies. Even if my hands match the colour of the sky, I still think it'll be worth it. The Trump tower is a whole load of... well, trump. Frankly, people keep pointing it out to me and I keep forgetting ... read more

Dear All, We left DC on the morning of the 4th November with Jeff and met Julian at the halfway point to Hershey PA. From there we drove through some of the most beautiful countryside we have seen so far. The autumnal colours were out in full force and the Appalcians looked amazing. Pennsylvania has some of the most wonderful countryside and is the perfect place to view the Fall in all its glory. We arrived at Julian and Jeanettes' beautiful house in Hummelstown and had a quick lunch before Jeanette took us on a drive of the local area. One of the most impressive things we saw was the school run by the Hershey Foundation. They have set up housing, and a fully comprehensive education for children from troubled backgrounds. That evening we were surprised ... read more

Oh my. I'm so so sorry I haven't written anything in so long, but then I always was hopeless at keeping a diary of any sort. In my defence (with a C, not an S), I've barely had time to sit down and call people, not to mention e-mail or blog, and I kind of wanted to wait until I had some pretty pictures to show you and exciting stuff to say. Now I have both and I can hear the roars of appreciation from you all, so here goes. Over the next few days, I'm going to try and write a couple of blogs on a variety of different topics, rather than just bombard you all now with one momma-sized entry. These will hopefully cover my job, my apartment and NYC/NJ life in general. I'd ... read more

As I left off saying, Milwaukee was our next stop, however, because of the atrocious Monday morning Chicago traffic mixed together with the fact that we didn't know what the hell was going on it took us a good 3 and a half hours to arrive at Sussex in Milwaukee. The company we visited was called Autologic and they develope and sell gas anylizers and smoke meters among other things. We only had a 2 hour window to receive a quick rundown on the equipment we wanted and it was straight onto the Hwy again for Milwaukee airport heading for Cleveland. Our flight was originally scheduled to leave Milwaukee at 6:55pm but that was not to be (AGAIN!!!) due to the air traffic control and about 3,000 planes in cue on the tarmac! We eventually arrived ... read more
