We were in New York from Jan. 12-16. Rather than giving you a play-by-play of our weekend, we wanted to provide a list of what we enjoyed. In order to put our experience in context, 2 things are important to know about us. First, we're not big museum people and rarely do anything touristy in New York. We like to walk around the city and take in all of the different interesting neighborhoods. Second, we like cheap delicious food and like to treat the city as one big tapas menu so we have a little bit to eat at a bunch of different places. Things we loved: 1. The Colbert Report - We hadn't really watched this show more than a couple of times but we both loved Stephen Colbert on the Daily Show so we ... read more

Why work Rose and I are officially unemployed and homeless. Yet everyone envies us. Why? We're off to see the world. Logistics The logistics of leaving home for a year are mind-boggling. US Health Insurance is not valid overseas. Travel Insurance is not valid in US. Bills need to be paid. It goes on and on. To learn more, I spent time at ThornTree "Gap Year" Forum at LonelyPlanet.com (to get destination advise), and on FlyerTalk.com "Airline Alliance" forums (to get transportation advice). Basically, choice came down to "pay as you go" airfare (too expensive for us) or pick one of the three Global Airline Alliances and go with them. Enter GlidePath Travel When researching the trip online, I came across this guy Gardyloo (John) who kept posting really good answers to questions others asked. In ... read more

I'm not sure which is more challenging.. living the dream, or writing about it. I'll try: ...It reverses. As this huge powerhouse virgin atlantic boeing 747 prepares for lift off, so do I. And as I stare out of the window, with tear stained cheeks, I fly out of LHR with the utmost conviction that this journey holds more than I imagine possible... ...As the plane made it's descent through the clouds, I caught my first sight of the Atlantic ocean - a vast, dark and dangerous blue, carpeting the earth's surface.. and then.. land. The US of A. Landing at JFK, I am, despite the long flight, boundless with excited energy and immediately feel a sense of ease and grounding. My first sight of the New York City skyline, an amass of sharp, solid grey ... read more

I'm not packed yet and the hours are ticking away. Jill is out buying a new cell phone she wont be able to use for the week. Peter is running around looking for Tivas and Mark seems to be the only one of us who is calm and ready... I've done my last Tiki Tan session and last trip to Target. Tomorrow, we meet at Newark Airport. Jill and I drive up at 5 am and Mark and Peter coming in from the city by rail. We arrive in San Jose at around 11am. And the adventure begins... ... read more

New York is pretty great. We've been doing heaps of stuff.......i think there is sooo much stuff to do that i might not be enjoying it as much because its just so much. Either that or I have been travelling for too long and have already seen so much other stuff. We got these passes to do pretty much every touristy thing in New York so we have been maxing it out and doing a lot. Went to the MET art museum. There was so many famous paintings and ancient arts and crafts, it was like an art textbook but in real life. But went through it pretty quick, although even if I had the whole day there, i still think i couldn't appreciate it all. Saw Beauty and the Beast on broadway. Was pretty good, ... read more

It's going to be almost 60 degrees today. Isn't it nice the weather is getting us ready for the equator? The up side of global warming. Soon the Ticos will be moving to Asbury. I know one person on a lake that would be cheering... Got my hair cut and the prerequisite gay mans wax yesterday. I’m getting looks when I tell people WHERE I am going and WHO I am traveling with.... The look of a prisoner as he watches his fellow inmate escape from Sing Sing... Dan excerp from email from Jill Ahhh yes... I too got the prerequisite hair cut and waxing (just eyebrows) yesterday. This am woke up and decided it would be a great morning to pack all the toiletries (sp). Yep, so I separated them into "like" categories...toothpaste with toothbrush, ... read more

Hi all, Well the blog is a bit late, but better late than never aye? So... after spending Xmas up in Newcastle with Kristin's sister Ann, and the boys, we finally got on the plane on the 28th bound for NYC. On arriving in NYC at around 11pm local time, we headed straight for the hotel. The hotel is in a fantastic position, right on the park on the upper west side. Unfortunately it would seem that an arm and a leg doesn't buy you much in Manhatten so we were greeted with a room barely big enough to hold the bed! Not to worry, we weren't planning on spending much time in there. On the morning of the 29th I awoke somewhat early to the sound of heavy rain above us? I took a quick ... read more
