For over 30 years management biologists have been annually surveying elk herds during the spring from fixed-wing aircraft in west-central Montana. Observers record the ratio of cow elk to calf elk to measure the productivity of the elk herd, i.e., high calf:cow ratios equate to a productive, growing elk herd. Since the late 1980s biologists have observed a progressive decline in the annual production of elk calves. My research empirically tested 3 hypotheses in an attempt to understand this trend: A) calf declines are the result of nutritional deficiencies resulting from high elk densities and/or changing habitat conditions; B) calf declines are the result of predation resulting from an increase in the abundance and distribution of a suite of predators; C) calf declines are the result of an aberrantly low proportion of mature bulls within herds ... read more

Editor Note For those of you who can't wait: as you probably know thanks to relay from Anne, we landed safely in mid-afternoon at Black Hills airport in South Dakota. Account of today -- which has three minutes left in it in our time zone -- and yesterday are pending as soon as we can get to them. I had this text finished last night, but it takes another half hour to upload and annotate pictures, and it was after midnight when I got that much done. In case you're wondering what's so hard about writing a blog entry when we only seem to fly less than four hours most days...so much of the average day is spent figuring out whether or not we're going to fly. That's Job One, and so bashing away at the ... read more

We all got out of Walla Walla and have landed safely in Missoula. We've now passed over the highest of the mountains we will cover on this trip, though we have some more to go. We decided to launch based on best available information, and to continue based on en route Flight Service weather and some local views. We had filed for S95 - Lewiston - Missoula -- Helena, with the general intention of stopping at Missoula at least to consider whether or not to go further. Just after departure We did indeed thread through scattered clouds around 5500 that cleared up as we moved eastward. For a while, it was smooth air and really lovely flying. Bob had been prepared to call it quits at Lewiston, but things were looking good at that point, and ... read more

So, now we are in Missoula, Montana. As Heidi said, today's drive was not too bad, after the initial hour or so. The scenery was amazing. I can only imagine what it would all look like in the summer...on a day where there is no cloud in the sky. We saw the "Crazy Mountains", yes that is what they are called. We saw parts of the Rocky's too. I found out that my belongings are still in Chicago. They have not even left yet...so, needless to say, I won't be getting my stuff on Friday, like I had hoped. The "delivery window" is until the 8th of January...so I don't anticipate it coming any time soon. I had a mini break-down, and now I'm ok. I know I can't do anything about it anyway, so why ... read more

It is Day 4. We drove from Sheridan Wyoming to Missoula Montana today. It started out the same as it ended yesterday. Nothing but snow and ice on the road for the 25 miles to the Montana border and then it was about 97% clear the rest of the way. We went through two passes in Montana, the Bozeman pass and the Homestake pass. There were lights flashing and warning signs about the snow and ice on the roads, but luckily it was pretty clear, just a bit slushy. So that was a good thing. The scenery was spectacular!! The latter part of the drive today had my 3 of my favorite things. Mountains, horses and cows !!!! Lots and lots of each of them. We wanted to perhaps venture a bit further today since the ... read more

Well, I spent the 12th through the 15th with Patrick's family. Patrick had to fight fire aka work and/or spend some time on call with the forest circus. So, I spent alot of time with Cody and Wyatt. I actually babysat for a few hours!!! Y'all believe that??? Wyatt had his moments and I was happy to give him back to his mother. Missoula was still a fine town and fall is a special time in Montana...But, time to get on the road. I think I missed my 4x6 tent...... read more

070817 Missoula MT to Wenatachee National Forest Washington Here's a picture of what I looked like when I got off trail....nice and dirty. Missoula was fun, but I felt like I was imposing on Chad and Corey had things to do before he went back on trail next week. I heard that Kat wasn’t living in Missoula anymore and Anne was nowhere to be found. Friday Chad and I went to a place called Sandy Beaches…it’s a bunch of small sandy beaches along the Alberton Gorge. On the way Chad and I saw something that made both of us spontaneously explode with laughter for a good five minutes. Missoula was covered with a thick layer of smoke from many forest fires in the surrounding area. Chad’s roommate Sam had even asked us if we wanted a ... read more

We left Oregon on May 31, after a great month at the beautiful Nehalem Bay State Park, and after an overnight stay in a neat little Oceanside campground on the Washington coast, headed for southeastern Washington to spend a few days with some friends, Glen and Lori, from Vancouver, and Terry and Linda, from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, all of whom had worked with us as volunteers in Oregon last year. We stayed for 3 days at the Yakima Nation RV Resort, a nice resort and casino in Toppenish, WA, then we all moved about 100 miles east to the little town of Walla Walla. It’s hard to take seriously any place with a name like Walla Walla, but in 2006, Money Magazine named it the best place in America to retire. It used to be ... read more

3 bored law students on break itching to hit the open road + 1 borrowed car = experiencing an authentic Montana high school rodeo. We didn’t particularly have a destination in mind for our roadtrip as the general area of Montana was good enough. We weren’t sure if Sam would make it across the border as he had an incredibly old Hong Kong passport and an expired Canadian passport with no current proof of citizenship. Truth be told, we were half convinced that Sam would be rejected at the border or denied entry on the way back. Miraculously/sadly, neither happened. Perhaps the border crossing at Glacier National Park is more sympathetic to foreign looking tourists entering the country eager to snap photos of lakes and mountains. First stop was a small town called East Glacier ... read more
