There are times in your life when all the elements seem to come full circle and you are struck by the patterns and pathways that have formed you. This past week certainly has been that. As a young child one of my favorite places to visit was to my mother’s cousin Natalie Frohock and her husband Brick, a professor at Harvard, in Cambridge, MA. They lived in what seemed to be a huge home near Harvard and there was always a somewhat mysterious air in the house – Brick was in his third floor study doing serious, intellectual work, Natalie had just come back from a trip to the gourmet grocer Savenour’s and was cooking something marvelous in the kitchen and my two cousins Natalie and Sarah were off and about in Harvard Square, seemingly much ... read more

On the 4th of April we had the privilege of visiting two of the most prestigious schools in the world Harvard and MIT. I’m sure most of you have seen Legally Blonde and 21, how they try to capture the lifestyle at these schools however they do little justice for them as they don’t show what’s beyond and within. Antony’s friend, Martin is a Kenyan who graduated from MIT and now works at Harvard in the Treasury Department. Despite his busy schedule he managed to give us a day long tour around the two campuses. Elvis the only Kenyan senior at Harvard gave a short tour; we went round to their dining hall and met their friendly Dining Hall Manager who told us that their number one priority is preparing good quality meals for the high ... read more

There is always some plan to avoid the jetlag. "I won't sleep before the flight so I'll be very tired and fall asleep easily during it it". Yeah. Rubbish. I didn't sleep more than two, maybe three hours on both flights. From the minute I took off it was light and food all the way. Even managed to get me a couple of Frankfurters and beer in, well, Frankfurt. Oh, and you really shouldn't drink beer when you're so tired. It doesn't agree with your head and didn't make me sleep at all. The only thing that does work is making sure that eventually you go to sleep in the evening and not before. That is why I'm still up for the last way-too-long-time (I really lost track). Landed here in the afternoon and kept walking ... read more

Wednesday morning, we drove back to Portland from lovely Bar Harbor. We hated to BH, since the people were so nice, the weather cooperated for a change, and the Maine lobster was outstanding if not better. So, in a driving rain storm for most of the three hour ride back, we hit the highways and byways of central Maine. We must have hit every road delay with one way traffic. But as we pulled into Freeport (home of LL Bean) for a brief stop to stretch and have a little soup, we were glad to be back in the city, and on the irritating toll roads. Thursday, we are continuing the drive back toward Boston. So after a hearty Maine breakfast at Becky's Diner, we will head south. We may stop in Kennebunkport to say hello ... read more

Before i hopped on a plane back to Mickey Mouse's home of Orlando we grabbed some dunkin donuts and headed off to the prestigious Harvard University to walk around the campus. There is an unofficial tour of the campus but we opted to wander aimlessly on our own. The weather definitely had a change of heart and we got a day of the sun shining as we walked around.... read more

Herein begins my journal about Boston! I'll try to update when I travel as well. The move from San Diego to Boston (which I did with Jaime) was a bit of a whirlwind. I'd miscommunicated with the Harvard Chemistry Department, and realized that I was supposed to be on campus a week before I thought. As a result, we cut out drive a day short, and I flew from Indiana to Boston as soon as I could. Regardless, Jaime and I had a grand old time on our trip. She'd planned an excellent route, with overnight stops in rural Utah (at the oldest functional bed & breakfast in the state); Boulder, CO; and Kansas City, Kansas, where much of her extended family lives. On the drive, we passed through a number of national parks, including Zion ... read more

Wednesday 2nd Jan - Well happy new year and welcome to blog two of 2008. Hope you all had a good one. I stayed in for the first time in probably 12 or so years, but it was enjoyable all the same. As U2 say, nothing changes on New Year’s Day. Well except the date and the year, but we’ll forgive them that small error. Today I got a lift with laura to her work in Sheila’s car, whose TomTom has John Cleese’ voice - scary! - as I needed to return some thermal bottoms and an adidas (oops, it was a Laura xmas prezzie!) Top at Marshall’s which believe it or not is more of a bargain than TK Maxx. Have to go back in there sometime - king of the bargain hunters that I ... read more

Robyn and I toured around Copley Square where there was a farmers market going on. We bought a genuine American apple pie to take to dinner tonight. Then we walked down Newbury Street and window-shopped for a while. I persuaded Robyn to go with me to see the spot where the Boston Tea Party took place. We went down to the river but had a hard time finding it. Finally, after much searching online on my phone I realized that the museum that commemorated the event had burned up and was still under construction for another year. We saw where the burned up building was, so I guess that’s where all the tea took a swim too. However, it was just our luck that a art project was going on right there, so our trip hadn’t ... read more
