We battled through the snowstorm in Maine while driving to a social function. In the car my sister, her husband and I were frantically trying to stay warm before making a dash through the driving snow and into the venue. We awoke the next morning to find the whole neighbourhood blanketed in nine inches of perfect snow, providing a beautiful backdrop with an outside air temperature of minus 17 degrees celsius. Wait a minute ... was this some kind of vivid dream? I'm from Australia and I've never experienced anything like this before! But that's one of the joys of travelling and has become my new life for a time, as I visit family in the gorgeous Maine suburb of South Berwick during a northern hemisphere winter. Playing uncle to the two kids and raving on ... read more

A Solstice Pilgrimage For over ten years now I’ve traveled north to New England for Christmas. The drive is always too long, longer than the sunlit hours, stretching into travel advisories and severe weather warnings. Rush hour always hits somewhere along the way, be it Wilmington, Delaware, the New Jersey Turnpike or Connecticut. And yet every year I return to the north country, renewing my soul in its snow- covered hills. At least once a year I like to get out on my skis and feel the rhythm of kick-and-glide, kick-and-glide. There is a starkly beautiful border between trudging on skis and skiing, when you kick free of friction and glide effortlessly across the snow, kick and glide again. Yet the zen-moment of kick and glide is fickle and fleeting. How much easier to bolt your ... read more

This is my first post on travelblog.com. Just discovered this through a Web-search. Anyway, this is going to be cool. First of all, I love to travel, but unfortunately not as often as other users who use this site, but I have always wanted to document and keep a journal of my important trips online. The two states in America that I spend most of my time are Maine (my home state) and Massachusetts (relatives...... and Sports events). Anyway, here is my biggest anticipation: Albuquerque in April 2006! My grandparents recently moved from Washington State to the Suburbs of Albuquerque. I will visit their new home and the surroundings. In the past I have traveled to Ireland, Washington/Seattle, Nova Scotia, and Upper Atlanic Coast U.S. for a baseball extravaganza (which included Philadelphia, Washington DC, Baltimore, and ... read more

What a FAB-U-LOUS time we had at Christmas Prelude!! It was my first visit to the Kennebunkport area and I LOVED it...it was the quintessential Maine I imagined. We got to town around 11:30 and drove to Cape Porpoise to see the Lobster Trap Tree...definitely the first lobster trap tree I've ever seen. Then we headed back in to Kennebunkport and put our name on the list for Hurricane...only had a 45 minute wait so we hit a couple shops. YUM YUM YUM doesn't even begin to describe the meal. As usual, the 3 of us ended up doing the communal meal because we all had delicious food - Maine Lobster Chowder, Five Onion Soup and Fall Harvest Soup (pumpkin, squash, cinnamon, nutmeg and cream base...it was like eating pumpkin pie), Fresh Maine Lobster Roll, Grilled ... read more

I spent the past weekend in Biddeford, ME (that’s Maine for all of you who don’t have your abbreviations memorized). We had a very smooth and easy, two hour ride on Amtrak to Meaghan’s hometown. Both Sr. Maria and I had never been to Maine so this was an adventure. Friday night we drove around Portland, ME (setting of many of Stephen King books) and looked at the HUGE OLD houses. They are massive homes of former maritime workers. Then, we went to the Portland Art Museum. Every Friday afternoon it is free to the public. Currently they are featuring a Rockwell Kent exhibit. You should check him out. For dinner that night, I possibly had the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. It was a frozen pizza from Sams club. It was ... read more

Maine! It’s the devil you know! And after days and days of travel I have started to get homesick. I miss my bed, I miss my cats, I miss waking up and not having to do anything. I miss my own toilet. Gosh do I miss my own toilet! Today was a day where I just went through the motions since Maine wasn't really on my to do list. I am stuck in Bangor since the bus to Stevensville doesn't leave until tomorrow morning. I had 24 hours to do something but like I mentioned, I am tired. I went to an O'Brien's for the first time ever. It is weird going to a grocery store that isn't an HEB. Also found a little comic book shop and caught up on some comics. Then I just ... read more

The owners of the campground have a habit of throwing a lobster bake for their workampers a few times every summer. Our first one was in July. They help finance the lobster with the money the workampers collect doing the recycling from the campground. In the playground area is a large fire pit. They start a big fire going and have a huge iron saucer like metal thing (about 4 feet across) they put on top of the fire. Then they pile on wet seaweed then lots of lobsters, clams and potatoes then more seaweed on top. Then they let the whole thing steam for awhile. They also stash corn in the fire to cook at the same time. When it's lobster time (kind of like Miller time but much better) (did I mention this is ... read more

8/23/03 Finally got around to exploring the nearby village of Bethel. We pumped up the tires on our bikes tossed them in the back of the beast and headed into town. Bethel is 7 miles away from the campground on very pretty US route 2. You may wondering why we don't ride the bikes into Bethel. Some people ride their bikes on US 2. We don't feel that brave. It is a 2 lane highway (the only north/south highway bisecting Maine) and fairly level. No real hills or difficult areas. The problems are the logging trucks and semi trucks and monstrous RVs that whiz past you. The backwash can almost knock you off the road, especially as there is no designated bike lane. I don't know how some of these bike riders we see do it. ... read more
