Memphis - New Orleans Wednesday 1st October (Day 37) Today we had a little time before leaving Memphis, but didn’t have much time to really go back into the city or any last attractions before needing to get sorted, so we just had a quiet morning at the hotel. We caught a taxi to the airport, bound this time for New Orleans. Of course, as with our last two flights, we could only get there via Atlanta, Georgia, so we were able to see the city for a third time from the air, while catching our connecting flight. We were both keen to see New Orleans, although we had been told to stay away from the French Quarter at night time, as it could be quite dangerous. We were also especially keen to visit the city, ... read more

Jambalya- it's a word from Scrubs that didn't mean much until we got here. It's a local dish here in New Orleans. Haven't had much access to the internet because it's not free here like it has been in all the other hotels we have stayed in, but i decided to suck it up and pay for it. A lot of people on the flights we have been on have been ill, so consequently both Lozzie and I were sick while we were in Cancun, and I haven't quite recovered yet. The 3 flights we took to get from Cancun to N.0 got me pretty congested and yucky, so on the first morning we got here I got up really early and went out in search of a chemist. AND IT WAS SNOWING! It hasn't snowed ... read more

A Week to be Thankful For Wouldn’t you just figure! This week freakin’ flew! It was SOOOO good to see my mama, though! We spent the week hanging out with Tammi over coffees, puttering around town and enjoying our (my last) week at the Portz’s. My favorite part had to be “girls night” when Lem and Katie left the kids with the daddies so they could join the moms and I watchin’ “A Death At A Funeral” and playin’ charades. Katie took the cake with her rendition of FRIED CHICKEN! She was the fried chicken…picture pregnant woman sizzling in a frying pan! Leslie was a close second with her impression of the poor bird that died in the pool earlier in the day! Tammi was extremely dedicated to her role as a paraplegic. Needless to ... read more

New Orleans is a party city, at the same time there is an incredible amount of poverty. The cab driver that dropped me at the hostel told me “It’s a great place to visit but a bad place to live”. He also told me that the only safe place I town was the famous French Quarter. Everywhere else he recommended not risking it. Unfortunately for me, the India House Hostel I was staying in is about 2 miles from the French Quarter. The only real safe and cheap way to get between the two is by streetcar (really old trams like the one at the Beamish Museum in Durham). Although the neighborhood was bad, the hostel was good fun. It’s made up of about five small wooden buildings facing onto a courtyard and swimming pool there ... read more

Wanderlust was growing so we decided to do a weekend in New Orleans to bridge the gap between other adventures... Always wanted to visit here; the music, the food, the culture, and for the most part we weren't disappointed! Arrived around noon to a wonderful blast of heat and humidity (starting to get cold here in Canada) we made our way down to the French Quarter and our hotel, the Andrew Jackson. Perfectly situated on Royal St. in the heart of the Quarter, it was a great launch point for all the activities... First on the agenda, pint! Okay, we did a bit of walking; checked out Royal St. and the antique shops and art galleries, took a stroll down Bourbon St. to get our bearings and then ducked into the great courtyard at Pat O'Brien's ... read more

Feb. 15 - We left Chattanooga at 7 A.M. The morning was beautiful. Old Lookout Mt. showed up in all his glory. We passed through the grass regions of Tenn. Most of the country of Geo. and Miss. was very poor. We saw our last patch of snow about 100 mi. out of Chattanooga. About 50 mi. south of that we saw the first cotton field & from that on there were many, although not such large fields as I expected to see. We saw oxen and windowless houses, just shutters. Much of the country has a rundown appearance. As the train was several hours late, we did not see much of Louisiana. We reached New Orleans at 11 P.M., too late to see the Mardi Gras parade. The Cosmopolitan was anything but nice, rates were ... read more

Day 83- Friday This is my third day in this great city and I am just about to check out and make my way to Memphis for the weekend. I am pleased to say that there seem to be quite as few tourists (mainly from the US) here at present and it seems to be business as usual for most.. Nevertheless, lots of places are still awaiting restoration and some have closed down. I think Amtrak must have a death wish. Not only do no US residents know anything about Amtrak passes such as we have enjoyed for $350 for 30 days but Amtrak do not even seem to care about the customers they have. I have mislaid my pass but have email confirmations of my bookings but Amtrak will not honour them. They say I ... read more

New Orleans After a long but very comfortable train ride we arrived in the Big Easy. We stayed the night with John & Abigail (CS) in the garden district. We ended up having Abby’s apartment to ourselves while they slept at John’s down the road. We did go out for a quick drink and bite to eat with our hosts as they wanted to partake in a celebratory birthday drink for one of their friends. The next day was spent exploring the French Quarter including Bourbon Street, Jackson Square and beignets (donut-like delights) at Café Du Monde. We partook in a walking tour around the streets enjoyed with a ‘to go’ Daiquiri. Unfortunately that was all we got to do in New Orleans as a mandatory evacuation was announced due to hurricane Gustaf. The Amtrak and ... read more
