Whoever the Greek god of interstates would be, he's happy at the moment Now I'm in New Orleans. Not only was it the most uneventful drive on the US Interstate system I've ever taken, it was the easiest one I've ever heard of. If you've ever gone more than a hundred miles on I-Anything, the most vivid memory you probably have is the color orange. Orange cones, orange barrels, and orange signs. Slow or barely moving workers in orange vests, orange hardhats, and waving orange flags at you. Every state in the US claims the orange cone is their state tree, the hot planer is their state animal, and "slow construction zone" their state motto. Not this time. Not one holdup for construction, not one lane closing accident, not even any bad weather. The travel gods ... read more

Back in New Orleans. I’m still trying to get used to these short cruises! I find myself completely lost on what day of the week it is or how much time is actually passing when our cruise routine is 4 and 5 day cruises. I didn’t have anything exciting planned for today. The timing of when I signed on the ship is so off with the pay cycle, I’m desperately awaiting pay day and until then am rather limited for what I can go out to do. But some of the camp girls were going around the French Quarter so I tagged along. We wandered around the old streets. It was Erica’s first time out in New Orleans, so we made a point of walking up and along Bourbon Street. The girls were hungry, so we ... read more

Generally, my travel list of places to visit consists of far off countries. But then there’s a list of cities in North America that I’ve always thought one day I’d get to. Places that are great for long weekends, last minute getaways, the end point of a road trip. When I was told that in order to go to the Triumph, I would have to first spend a month on the Fantasy, the thing that made me excited about this month was the home port being New Orleans. New Orleans is just one of those cities that I really want to see. I’m at the halfway point of my time here on the Fantasy, but finally today was my chance to get up and get out in the city. First, there was a matter of business ... read more

Ok, I'm a little late in creating this, but hopefully I'll keep up with it from now on. Originally I wanted to travel this summer by myself, but then got to thinking and changed my mind - not about traveling, but about doing it alone. Johnny, my cousin from an aunt on my dad's side of the family, is graduating in May from high school and so I came up with the idea of offering him some travel options as a present. Long before I ever actually asked him I asked another aunt if his mom would think I was crazy for offering and when she said go for it I asked his mom. When all the permission-seeking was done I finally drove across the lake (lake Pontchartrain) with my ant Debbie to go over and ... read more

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting in the first one.” Mark Twain I will start with saying that I am sorry for being so late with this travel blog entry. I guess the good side of that is that I am busy having a good time rather than writing travel blogs. I keep a paper journal daily so no worries, you will still hear about it all. You will probably notice that the blogs now will not have as much detail. I have decided once I get caught up, I am going to write in the blog every few days instead of trying to separate it by states. What this means to you is that you ... read more

In the morning we woke up to get breakfast from the hotel, which was pretty average. They had an okay selection but none of it was stunning. I grabbed a couple of packs of the grits that they had there so that I could take them home and show them to people who have never seen them before. After we had eaten we grabbed things from our room and headed out to Jeff’s dad’s place which was in a beautiful part of the country. We spent a few minutes talking but had to head out pretty quickly to get to New Orleans and meet up with Dater’s brother Andy. The drive south was a lot of fun, the scenery was beautiful, even from the road. We listened to the Sister Act soundtrack amongst other things with ... read more

New Orleans can be the heart and soul of inspiration to any city. Driving into New Orleans is an adrenaline rush, as soon as your vehicle rolls into the city it's like you're holding your breath under water until you leave again. It's a great city but is in need of some attention. Tourists are the only ones that can further develop it and hopefully tourists create a chain reaction in a growing industry. I went on a mission trip to fix up houses after Katrina hit so unfortunately i saw a lot of the after math and not what it was like before hand. Everywhere you look you can see the evidence of the destruction the hurricane had. The only things that have been fixed up are the highways, the casinos and the main streets. ... read more

On August 30th, I got the call I was dreading and eagerly waiting for. I got the go to head to Louisiana for Hurricane Gustav. I was originally expected in Alabama on Sunday, they called me on Friday morning. I was in San Jose, CA. I got a reprieve to arrive on Monday. When I finally got to Dallas it became apparent that I would have to drive through the Hurricane to get to Alabama. At that point I was told to hang out in Dallas until things settled out. Then when the storm hit, I was told to head directly to Louisiana. Now this was all familar territory since I had been here only 2 and a half years before for Katrina. I was excited to see what changes had been made since I left. ... read more

It's bright and fresh in New Orleans. The sun streaks down the grubby but not filthy streets of the French Quarter. Bourbon Street is linen with peep shows, topless table top dancing and all night bars. On one corner a slow, lazy and drunken Jazz is played by a barley formed and half awake, ragged band. Booming, flatulent tuba bass is accompanied by rattled, jangle boned piano. The drums sound like they are falling down stairs in slow motion as an absentminded rhythm is stroked out by a guitarist who rocks back an forth in double time. The singer croaks the songs lyrics in cracked, broken and hacked tones and a trombone slurs out a melody. In a bar a few streets down a young man in dungarees, shaven headed, manically scratches out a rattled ... read more
