Sunday, October 9th, Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY Mileage 18074. Gorgeous blue sky. Lovely Fall day. Watched the riders drive their light buggies and run the course near the campground before we drove down about a block to the entrance to the Horse Park itself. We spent the day until about 3:30 at the horse park. We took in the museum that plays homage to the horse through the ages by displaying pictures, dioramas, wall hangings, and life size replicas of horses and their interaction with man. Had lunch at their cafeteria and then walked around the park looking at bronze statues of famous horses. Sat in a small grandstand and watched the Parade of Horses where young costumed women show various breeds of horses in an arena. For example, a young woman dressed like a ... read more
Try not. Do or do not. There is no try. -Yoda Wise words indeed. Welcome back faithful reader to the great mystery/science fiction/comedy/broadway musical that is my life. Yes, we've laughed and cried together, waited impatiently for the next blog and been inndated by whimsical nonsence, we've won awards and had to hide from the paparazzi, we've... Well, that's not really true. But maybe you've enjoyed it nonetheless. In the classic form of presentations (note, if you will, that for the purposes of this sentence I'm pronouncing that word "preeeeeeeeeeeeeezintashins" and imagining myself wearing a monacle - not 100% sure why), I plan on telling you what I'm going to tell you, then telling you, then telling you what I just told you. Shall we begin? Of course we... shall. What I'm going to tell you: ... read more
Horse Capital of the World
Published: October 21st 2010North America » United States » Kentucky » LexingtonHi Everyone!! Yesterday morning in DC we hit up a few museums; The National Geographic Museum and the Holocaust Museum. The National Geographic Museum was alright, they just had a couple exhibits (the Gecko exhibit was the biggest). Getting to the National Geographic was sort of a hike, but it gave us a chance to see a different part of the city that we weren’t staying in. The Holocaust Museum was the one that we really wanted to go to and it was amazing… it was four floors - you take an elevator up to the top and work your way down (i'm so bummed because pictures weren't allowed) it was intense and emotional, I feel like we could have spent a few hours in there but we were trying to get on the road at ... read more
The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, "What is the use of climbing Mount Everest?" and my answer must at once be, "It is no use." There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behavior of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to raise food. It's no use. So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man ... read more
After you've done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully. After five years, look at it with suspicion. And after ten years, throw it away and start all over. ~Alfred Edward Perlman, New York Times, 3 July 1958 Welcome back Constant Readers! Some of you might have thought me dead. I am not. Some of you might have thought me injured. I am not. Some of you might have thought me stupid and lazy. This, in fact, I am. There can be no excuse for my long absence, but what I can say is that the past two years have been one of enormous change and growth for me, and that the next two look to be even greater. When I last left you (and I had to go back and ... read more
“Redbud Season” in Kentucky is like “Leaf Peeping Season” in Vermont. Special tours, designated routes, photo ops galore! This is our fourth time to stay at the RV Park at Kentucky Horse Park. Obviously, it suits us. The actual Horse Park will be the venue for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games from Sept. 25- Oct. 10. Equestrians from around the world will compete in eight sports including jumping and a 100 mile cross country endurance ride. The horse park is worth a visit just for the exhibitry, which includes daily live appearances by New York Bred Derby and Preakness winner, Funny Cide, who was born at McMahon of Saratoga, making Joe & Anne McMahon the breeders of record . We had a surprise visit by our great niece and nephew, Madison and Aiden McMahon ... read more
Bowling Green and Lexington, Kentucky
Published: July 12th 2009North America » United States » Kentucky » LexingtonYesterday we went to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington which was wonderful. We got to see many of the most famous horses of all times and even pet Cigar the horse to make the most money and he made millions before retiring. They were all so beautiful and the place was truly spectacular. Then we drove out to Shaker Village and ate lunch at a Shaker restaurant and toured the grounds. We passed Boone's Cave where Daniel Boone spent a winter. We got into Cave City in the evening and toured Dinosaur World and then had a poolside picnic at our motel. Today we went to Kentucky Down Under and saw the animals and wonderful cave tour there and then we went out to Mammoth Cave Nat'l Park. Then we toured the National Corvette Museum ... read more
High Hampton Inn and Kentucky
Published: July 10th 2009North America » United States » Kentucky » LexingtonOur last day in Hendersonville we hiked nearby Triple Falls in the Du Pont Forest where they filmed the Last of the Mohicans and then we drove out to the area my ancestors settled in the 1700's (Candler, NC named after Zachariah Candler my great grandfather back 8 generations). We found some old family graves I had looked up last year while doing geneaology research. It took hours to find them since they were from the 1700's and not even in a real cemetery---people own the property now that was once my relatives' land 200 years ago and the family plot is unmarked and on the property above a meadow---we had to ask many old locals who sent us from one place to another until finally one elderly lady about 80 years old told me she ... read more
Day 14 - Kansas City MO to Lexington KY
Published: July 12th 2008North America » United States » Kentucky » LexingtonWe drove through mostly farmland again from Kansas City, MO to Lexington, KY. We crossed the mighty Mississippi River in St. Louis, MO where the evidence of the swollen river was all around. This is where we were to pick up I-64 from I-70 but we were surprised to find signs telling us it was closed. Karen called the Road Conditions number given her by AAA to get redirected. After a few minutes delay we were back on track toward the familiar I-64 - the road HOME! At 7:00 pm we arrived in Lexington but had to make one more stop at….WalMart. The last provisions stop. The unfortunate thing about a small space is there isn’t much storage room for food for 4 people, so we had to stop frequently for food stuffs. We finally pulled ... read more
