It was a cliff-hanger but Santa Maria pulled it out -- 5-3 in 11 innings. After 4 innings, SM trailed the Community Bank (Wichita, KS) Cowboys 3-0. With runs in the 5th and 6th innings, SM pulled to within 3-2, and then a run in the 8th made it 3-3. A 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 11th brought home the 5-3 win for Santa Maria. From the 8th inning, the radio announcers were commenting that it was the best game so far in the World Series (and it is going to be hard to top it). JJ entered the game in the middle innings as a pinch runner. Wes did not play. With the extra innings, though, both players can expect some playing time in the next two games. For a complete play-by-play ... read more

With less than 24 hours notice the Patriot Guard was asked to provide escort to a young Marine that was coming home from Iraq. Well, that is what we like to do best - Welcome Home servicemen. We are to meet at Doc’s coffee shop, they don’t even bother telling us that it is more commonly know as the McDonalds at 87th and I-435 in Lenexa, KS. Anyway we are to meet there at 2PM and then at 2:15 we will head out to the airport. The plane is coming in at 3:30PM. The group gets together, at the McDonalds. There is plenty of time to chat and say hellos. I had been gone for a week so it was good to see the guys again. One of the guys and I wish I had ... read more

I was in CO on a riding tour with HOG (Harley Owners Group). On the ride home from Breckenridge CO to Kansas City, KS., I decided to take the long way. That route would be to NM, then OK, TX and back into KS. I am on my 2005 Harley Davidson 883 Sportster. My favorite form of transportation. I love Hwy 54 that goes through the southern part of KS, its like Route 66, except the stuff on Hwy 54 is still open. Greensburg, KS., is located on this stretch of Hwy 54. So I pulled over to observe the progress of recovery of this town. It was hit by a tornado the first week in May. May 4th I think. The President, FEMA everyone seems to be helping. A little background. Greensburg was/is the county ... read more

I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. My last day, I am on the way home. I am ready to be home but I have one more night out. I am heading to Garnett, the home of my parents. I promised I would stop there on the way home. On this bright morning the owner of the motel came round as I was packing the bike. I told ... read more

It was titled Kanza Art. Kanza is the Indian Nation that Kansas is named after. The Whirly Gigs along Hwy 54, in southcentral Kansas, has caught my eye every trip through here. This trip was going to be the time when I pulled it over and go check them out up close. From the Hwy they are a sight, most are flapping or rotating and the bright colors combined with the ingenuity brings a smile to your face. The gigs are lining a railroad track so they sit off the Hwy quite a few feet. As I zipped by the gigs I saw them and made a u-turn in the highway. You have to love traveling on a sporty, turns on a dime and the start of a line will allow very few other bikes in ... read more

Friday, June 29, 2007 Woke up and left Hays around 10:30ish after having sandwiches for breakfast. The only difference today in regards to the view is that it is sunny, other than that it is still flat farmland. Today seems more beautiful though, maybe because we are getting used to the view? I do like mountains though and there is not much water around either… Much easier to tell the difference between cattle and bales of hay in the sun too! Thank you for the clarification Susan! Elan: “We couldn’t have done it without you Aunt Susan!” ☺ Also bales of hay are brown while the cattle are sometimes brown but often white or black! Lots of fields of corn everywhere. We read that Interstate 70 is Main Street, USA. It goes from Washington, D.C. to ... read more

Friday 22JUN07 The saddlebag fiasco from Thursday night means that I packed late that night. I got the saddlebags back on the bike, but that required a run to 2 stores trying to get the right hardware. I took the saddlebags off because I was getting new tires. Well, one night and the better part of the next day later, we finally rolled from the train station in Newton, KS. Since we were leaving around 5:00 we knew we’d be traveling in the dark for much of the 14 hour ride, so when it started to storm nearly immediately after we boarded we knew there was only one thing to do - get a drink. We stowed our stuff, and made our way back to the lounge and viewing car. Even though we were going through South-Central Kansas the views were, at times, interesting. We saw a few small towns resulting in a lengthy lament of the decline of small-town America - literarture and John Mellencamp came up - we saw some rolling prairie lands, and at one point I saw a cattle processing ... read more
