Well everyone, just a note to say that I am back home safe and sound! The trip to Zanzibar was amazing. When we got to the hotel in Paje we had to sit at the restaurant to wait for our room. It wasn't too difficult given the face the restaurant was facing the ocean. We sat on a comfy couch enjoying the soft breeze and green waves. Seriously, I don't think Karen or I said anything for a hour. We just sat and relaxed which was the perfect way to end the trip. We stayed at the Kinazi Upepo which was great and had a little bungalow on the beach. Paje is on the east side of the island and has powdery white sand beaches and light green water. I loved the fact that there was ... read more

One will do anything for a chance to sleep in their own bed, even if for one night. On the road usually most of the week, I have driven home straight 17 hours to be here. Also, 14 hours, 11 hours, 15 hours, and from locations such as New Orleans, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Houston. Driving is different from flying as it puts you behind the cockpit. There isn’t a security person asking you to dump out your water bottles and take off your shoes. However, on the road, whether you like it or not, you have entered the TRUCKERS DOMAIN. These truckers in America, and the rest of the world, think because they are so big that they can run over the tiny cars. They have their own lifestyles, radio shows, gas stations, etc. which ... read more

Well folks, it looks like we're coming home. After hanging out in Longmont for 5 unprecendented nights (and getting to see snow!), we decided to end the trip and return. Winter is closing in on the high country and our plans to visit relatives in Nebraska didn't pan out. Granted, we could have visited the World's Largest Ball of Twine or the World's largest Prairie Dog, but the Barbed Wire Museum was closed for the season. So why wait? We've had a great trip and have accomplished what we set out to do; I think we're ready to come back. Plus Joe and Diane completely spoiled us with drinks, warm beds and chili. Who wants to camp? We expect to be back in Ktown on Wednesday or Thursday of this week, basically a week early. Probably ... read more

Okay, so I was asked to carry the American Legion Auxiliary banner in the post color guard for the Overland Park, KS parade. I rode my bike to the Legion post building (AL post 370, Overland Park) and I wore my American Legion Riders vest in the parade, so its still going to count as a bike event and be included my blog here. The day started around 10AM as I had volunteered to help decorate the Aux float that morning. When I got to the post Norma the AUX president wasn’t there yet so I sat and had a great conversation with Rabbit a fellow ALR member. Rabbit is such a teddy bear, calm, confident and you just feel secure being around him. So I asked him if he had any inclination to help with ... read more

Just a quick note to share some photos. My guest room has become a disaster zone but the upside is that I've got most of my items packed. I highly recommend the folding/packing things - don't know what they are called but I'll include a photo for you. I had two wonderful going away parties this weekend. Thanks to my family and friends for making my last weekend so much fun. You guys are the best! Here's some background info on Tanzania and Moshi... Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is the southern most country in East Africa. Its mainland borders Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia in the south; Congo (Kinshasa), Burundi, and Rwanda on the west; Uganda and Kenya in the north; and the Indian Ocean in the east. Lake Nyasa forms part of the ... read more

Testing, testing, 1 -2 - 3. Well, I am 9 days away from leaving for my trip and getting very excited. Some background for those who may not know...I am going to spend a month in Tanzania volunteering through Cross Cultural Solutions (CCS). I've always wanted to go to Africa and when I read about "volunteering vacations" I decided that would be a great solution. I want to be able to do something useful for the community and get a better understanding of life in Africa that I wouldn't get if I simply went on a safari. I will be staying at the CCS Karanga house in Moshi which is a small town right at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Moshi just won the "Cleanest City in Tanzania" award and has major amenities like banks, hotels, ... read more

Friday August 10th: We left the beautiful Kansas City and headed west on I 70, 600+ miles. It was a LONG drive with mile after mile of corn, sunflower and soybean. Rolls of hay, cows and horses periodically dotted the landscape. It's hard to imagine what life is like on these farms. Where do you go food shopping?! We only made a couple of stops. Our last was at the "Oasis" in Corey KN complete with 40ft fake palm trees. Our choices included Starbucks, Quiznos, Baskin Robin's need I say more? We actually went to a very lovely visitor center and met a elderly gentleman who works there. I felt bad when we had to say we were just passing through like 99% of the people who stop there. They do have a Prairie Museum ... read more

Dear....God.... Okay, let me try that again. This morning I woke up more excited than usual (especially given my EconoLodge surroundings). Today I was going to find out the truth of the origin of life. Today I was finally to understand the meaning of existence. Today I was going to the Creation Museum. The Museum is a $27 million dollar, 60,000 square foot facility is the crown jewel in the evangelical Christian's fight on science in the name of God. It is a place of refuge; a sight of affirmation; an escape from the nonsense of common sense. I sped down the freeway prepared to be partly scared, partly outraged, partly stupified, and totally amused. I left with only, and totally, feeling pity. After following the roadsigns to the "Creation Museum" from the 275, I rolled ... read more

I have SO much to share, but for now, I just want you to know that I have just gotten home safely. We were 53 hours in transit, this time...instead of the 21 hours it was supposed to take. Whew. This was one of the most amazing months of my life. Now, I need to go rest. More soon!... read more
