ABC's of Touring "E" County
Ellsworth county is the first ABC of Touring Photo for this trip. I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. HOG is Harley Owners Group. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Harley Davidson Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the trip. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures.
Friday 22JUN07
The saddlebag fiasco from Thursday night means that I packed late that night. I got the saddlebags back on the bike, but that required a run to 2 stores trying to get the right hardware. I took the saddlebags off because I was getting new tires. CHD used to charge $25 if they had to mess with saddlebags that were in the way. Of course, I take it out there lastweek and the service writer tells me that they don’t charge anymore if the saddlebags are on. Anyway now I am trying to put them back on and I don’t understand, I took special care to put all the hardware in plastic bag when I took
it all off. But it was half gone when I went to put them back on. That had me running around at 9PM Thursday night trying to find the right size nuts and bolts to mount the saddlebags.
I wanted to get up and gone early Friday morning so it was a short night. I headed to bed around 1 AM and then got up at 6AM to head out. The bike was packed and ready to go, so it was a short time before I hit the road. Being cheap and not wanting to pay the toll that is charged for I-70 from KC to Topeka, I took hwys 32 & 24 across KS past Topeka. I stopped at Goodland to get better pictures of the Van Gogh painting. I also made several ABC stops and Road Kill Safari stops. The weather was great until I hit Limon, CO. Then it looked bad, I put on my rain jacket but not the pants. At Deer Trail, CO., I stopped and put on the pants, by then I was pretty well soaked. The wind was pretty strong but it just kept me awake. I got to Denver, CO about
7PM. Kay and Jackie, my cousins, had the food ready and were waiting for me when I got there. They, like me, don’t cook. After a quick shower I had some of the best fried chicken and lots of vegetables which I was hungry for. We talked all evening and Jackie showed me the photos from their recent trip to see the penguins. She is a great photographer and really had some great shots. She judges walks and trips not in how long they are but in how many rolls of film was needed to complete it.
It was 642 miles for the day.
