Jim and I will leave Kansas Wed., Feb. 3 and will drive to IL to Frank and Geneva Carlet's (Jim's parents). We'll spend the night there, load up their car with clothes to last each of us a month and hopefully (with a cartop carrier) we'll all fit and leave Feb. 4 to Florida. We'll stop and spend the night with relatives in Birmingham, AL, stay in a motel one night and then arrive in Orange City, FL noonish on Sat. Frank and Geneva will be staying with relatives in Orange City and will take us to the Orlando airport Monday, Feb. 8 afternoon to fly to Panama. I won't be writing anymore until we arrive there and I can upload some pictures (and hopefully some adventures). Stay turned....... read more

Ruländer or Grauburgunder This is a type of white wine that is produced in Germany. This German wine will taste similar to any type of white wine found in other parts of the world. This is because these are really not German wines. Although these wines are made in Germany, they are distinctly similar to American and French wines and are often just fancy German names given to the wines made in other parts of the world. This is the reason that these wines will taste very similar to any person who is an experienced wine taster. These wines are great to have with any meal because they are not as sharp in taste as other German wines are. Scheurebe This is another type of white wine from Germany. The grapes used to make this wine ... read more

Since my previous Xmas letters are posted in the blog I thought I would post this one too. 2009 Seasons Greetings. I hope this letter finds you well. Seems like it was not that long ago that I was writing last years Xmas letter, but here I am again. I have had a pretty full year. I took advantage of being able to pay someone else to do my job at the American Legion and took 3 trips this year. Early April I was suffering from the cold weather so headed south to ride the Natchez Trace from its beginning at Natchez, LA to its end at Nashville, TN. It’s a National Parkway, 444 miles without a stoplight, stop sign or yield sign. All along the route there were great bits of preserved history. I had ... read more

Heipähei! USA:n hallitus julkaisee työttömyysluvun kuukausittain(mikä on muuten tällä hetkellä 10.2%). Ajattelin että tälläinen kuukausittainen blogikirjoituksen julkaisu taitaa sopia minullekin. Viitisen viikkoa sitten lähdettiin syysloman viettoon New York:iin. Meillä oli punkkapaikat varattu etuk... read more

Here are some links to marching videos when we performed for the Heart of America Band Festival. The pre-game is incomplete, but we only did half of it for this show. I am mostly back field, sorry the films are a bit far away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpnkxWOBr5w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4G12C-UZb4 and here is a picture link http://www.kansasdrumline.com/index/09photos.html#10 I have also added some pictures of my apartment, outings with friends, and of course from marching band. We had a senior day where all of the band seniors stood on the field and had their names announced over the loud speaker. I have been quite busy this semester and band had actually taken up most of my time. I am about to begin second semester and will be taking some new courses and working at the Study Abroad Office. Everyone, I hope ... read more

One year ago Trang and her husband Huan came to the United States to have their wedding blessed in the Holy Nativity Church in Kinsley Kansas. Kinsley and the Kinsley Rotary Club were home to Trang when she was a Rotary Exchange Student. Trang was the first Exchange Student since the new government in Vietnam. I believe a few followed her but Rotary International now says Exchange Students must come from "Rotary Countries," so that has ended a great program to help poor kids of poor countries. Trang was an orphan, she lost her Father when she was eight years old. She has a Mother, but in Vietnam, if you don't have a Dad, you are an orphan. This is a good concept because most women of her Mother's generation are not trained to make a ... read more

I thought I'd include some pictures of relating to the Blues & Jazz Scene for my friends Dan, Soulideth, and anyone else. One of the coolest jobs I ever had was being on the stage crew for lots of Kansas City music events. I worked on the KC Blues and Jazz festival for about 7 of it's 10 or 11 years. Got to work for lots of big name acts but especially enjoyed getting aquainted with several Kansas City music Legends including the Late Jay "Hootie" McShann, Sonny Kenner, and Claude "Fiddler" Williams. Over on the Missouri Side, they opened the American Jazz Museum in the "historic Jazz District" around 18th St. and Vine. I worked on the all star show they had for the grand opening about 11 years ago. They got a nice Charlie ... read more

DAY 16 - WED - 30 SEPT Everyday I have been entering my gas reciepts and mileage in a spreadsheet. Its been interesting looking at my MPG throughout the trip. As I am entering yesterdays reciepts I notice that the best MPG happened yesterday as I was heading north through TX and OK. Believe it or not I got 70 MPG. My average has been around 50, so I double checked my numbers. I have a slight noise in the motor but its not using any oil and I'm getting 70 MPG, make all the noise you want. This was to be a day of heroes. I only had 260 miles to go today. I had planned to take hwy 54 to Iola then head north on hwy 59 through Garnett and then on to KC. ... read more

Day 15 - Tuesday - 29 SEPT I was up early this morning but reluctant to leave because it was cold out. Old age is getting to me. As I was packing the bike I heard a thump thump thump… it was the motel housekeeping swinging a rag at the window ledges to get the dust off them. The motel was as interesting this morning as I had found it last night. The parking lot was huge. This motel had lots of rooms. I can’t wait until I can follow route 66 for its entirety maybe next year. The first stop was Quay county NM, for my ABC’s. Most counties will mark their borders with a sign. Not Quay. I looked all over the county seat before I found something that was marked with Quay County. ... read more
