(The Shepherd’s Staff) I’ve done a poor job of letting you know about our tours. I always get behind when I have to go someplace to use the wifi~~I get here and can’t remember what I was going to do. We are on tour for this project, and at first we thought there would be nothing to see, but then we (Bob!) looked under the surface and discovered that Colby has a museum that would rival a town three times its size. It (the museum, not the town!) covers 24 acres, and at first we allotted 1 ½ hours to tour the building and grounds, and eventually we extended that by another hour, with the thought that people that want more time can come back! The main building is very large, and filled with organized ... read more

Itseasissa en... read more

In October 2008 my former Rotary Exchange Student Trang Nguyen and her husband Huan Tran came to the United States to have their wedding blessed. While they were here they also performed at the 2008 Rotary District Conference in Wichita Kansas. It was also an opportunity for Huan to see some of the places Trang enjoyed while she was here as an Exchange Student in 1999-00 and later as a college student in Barton County Community College in Great Bend Kansas. Huan is an actor and Trang is an Airline Flight Attendant for Vietnam Airlines. Experiencing a Kansas Milo Harvest was one of the highlights Huan got to enjoy. Since 80 % of his countrymen work on farms with mostly hand labor, experiencing a mechanized harvest operation was something very new to him. In 2000 when ... read more

I had a busy weekend. Friday I spent a couple hours at the Open House at the Kansas City Harley Factory. Spent some time in Garnett saddling horses for my Dad and a day here in KC fiddling with Effie. Melany and Willie asked if I wanted to ride out to the open house with them in the morning. Willie brought breakfast, what a sweetheart. I rode the new XR1200 they had in the demo rides. Wow what a fun ride. I am a little short in the inseam though. I could not engage or disengage the kickstand. The controls are in the crotch rocket position that was very different. I was stuck behind a 'sunday ride in the park' bagger demo most of the way around the route. The route was 10 miles and all ... read more

(The Shepherd’s Staff) Hey, Dorothy, we’re in Kansas! And it’s certainly different than any place we’ve visited so far….but haven’t I said that at every place we’ve visited so far! We only have three couples right now, as the other two have medical situations which will delay them a week or two; Glenn and Joyce are the leaders, and we originally worked with them in British Columbia, at Ness Lake; Wilmer and Marilyn worked with us last January through March, in Florida. The other two couples are new to us. Shepherd’s Staff is a ministry that serves other ministries; it provides facilities for the smaller area churches to hold retreats and other functions, as well as offering programs of its own. Because there are no mountains, or water, or other attractions around, Shepherd’s Staff focuses on ... read more

It was 1972 and I was in Jr High. I could not remember a time when nightly updates on the Vietnam War did not happen. The popular phrase was "Make Love NOT War" and I didn't know the true consequences of either. But I got a little taste of the effects of the latter. The Peoples Theater we had in my home town of Garnett offered movies for a quarter, unless it was a Disney then it was 35 cents. None were new releases. They also brought to our little town POW/MIA bracelets and they were popular with my peers. There was a box of them that the ticket salesman had in his booth and you selected the one you wanted. The bracelets had a hole on one end of the bracelet and if the name ... read more

Its Sunday and time for The Ride to the Wall. Saturday evening I had asked Darrel if he wanted to go and if he wanted to get a group together to ride down for the riders viewing of the traveling wall in Garnett. They were offering a free BBQ lunch to all motorcyclist that rode in between 12 and 4PM. Darrel called his brother and we were all on for ride. At 10AM Darrel and I left KC and picked up Brian and his SO Joan in Paola on the way to Garnett. Brian and Joan was riding his new Yamaha V-Star Silverado. We rode in with a temperature in the high 60's. I have to say Garnett has really done excellent in handling the wall. Every thing is calm in the area, there has always ... read more

I went to Garnett, KS on Thursday for the opening ceremonies for the traveling Vietnam War Memorial Wall. The wall was set up in front of the American Legion/VFW building at the south lake. The area is also known a Veterans Park. The ceremony started at 6pm I was there a few minutes for that. Garnett was very pleased that they could afford to have the wall stop there and they have made it a big affair. They are having a variety of programs until the wall is taken down on Tuesday. Friday was to be school day. Garnett is the county seat and many students from all over the county go to school at Garnett. Friday was wet and humid all day. Sprinkling most of the day. I later learned that over 1000 student came ... read more

... read more
