We arose early this morning to start our real trek through the Lewis and Clark past, only to realize that we still had to decide what to do with the old guy we "rescued" from Camp Dubois. We found him asleep outside his room. He had arisen early in the morning and gone outside to reconnoiter, become confused by the street traffic, and attempted to return to safety, only to discover that he did not know how to access entry to his room. We went to breakfast with him at our side. Over breakfast we gradually became convinced that he might be who he said he was, and at his earnest request, decided to take him with us. He was certainly entertaining enough. Our first stop was the Daniel Boone Home Historic Site near Defiance MO. ... read more

Day 10 – Little Big Horn and to Gillette With Yellowstone now behind us, the second part of our adventure began – the drive back through Montana and Wyoming and into the Black Hills of South Dakota. The first significant stop on our drive was the Little Bighorn Battlefield where the infamous George Custer made his supposed last stand. Fortunately the battlefield was literally on our route towards the Black Hills, and was conveniently situated just off Interstate 90 which made it really easy to access. We arrived at the battlefield and into the relatively small visitors centre which had a small number of displays and some basic information on the battlefield. There was a short video which outlined the events leading up to the confrontation, and an explanation of how the battle unfolded and the ... read more

So this entry is going to be a little bit eclectic, and have very little correlation in time, but we thought it might be worth writing about a few of the experiences we have had in addition to our travels. We think there'll probably be a bit more of this as travelling won't be as easy for us with the schooling commitments the boys have, but hopefully it means we get out and do a bit of crazy stuff in the local area. AOK Party So the first event worth blogging about is the annual 'AOK', or Australia, Orange (Dutch), and Kiwi party that is hosted on or around Australia Day each year at Fort Leavenworth. It is mostly organised by the international students of said countries who are attending the US Command and General Staff ... read more

Our flight from Australia arrived into Kansas City quite late in the evening but were fortunately met but some of the other Aussies working at Fort Leavenworth. We pick up the hire car and made our way to our temporary accommodation which would be home for the next two weeks. We had a great two-bedroom apartment in Zona Rosa which is a great shopping district in the North East of Kansas City. We spent the next few days unwinding and preparing for Christmas. We did the obligatory Walmart run – Fiona was in heaven, I wanted to neck myself. The boys were very excited and anxious to make sure that Santa would find them in our new house, so we decided to take them into the shops for our annual Christmas photo….big mistake. Our second foray to the United States began on the 18 December as we boarded our United Airlines flight for San Francisco. This time things would be a little different – we would have Patrick (5) and Nicholas (3) in tow. Paddy would start school, so there would be no taking random days off and travelling on a whim. Also, we weren’t destined for sunny Florida, but the small town of Leavenworth in the Midwest of the US…..corn country, and Fiona has a weird phobia of cornfields. Fort Leavenworth would be our home for the next two years. The whole family was pretty keen to head to the US after a challenging year which was dominated by the drudgery of Command and Staff College. However, the upside was the making of new friends who helped see ... read more

Saturday --- 23 May 2009 Well the weather is great and I am ready for a ride. I had been wanting to take some more pictures of Effie out on these bridges I found in March when I was looking up all the Lewis and Clark historic sites in the area. It being my day off, I slept in and then called Daryl to see if he would want to go with me. We made arrangements to meet at 13:50 and ride out. The site is around 60 miles from home. Heading out of KC toward Ft Leavenworth, KS I was in the lead which is unusual. I decided to take Hwy 5 which will take us right to the National Cemetery in Leavenworth. Hwy 5 is twisty and curvy. I call it The Gecko, it ... read more

Very Short Notice Good Luck Mechanic SPC Thomas Regan of Topeka, KS, assigned to the 250th FSC KSARNG, was killed in an automobile accident last weekend. His widow, Rebecca, requested the attendance of the Patriot Guard at his wake and burial. Bring your big flags. Ride Captain is Mechanic. ------- That is how they come. A simple email followed with the instructions on where and when to meet up, or ‘stage’ as they like to call it. The request for the Patriot Guard to join them was late coming, with less then 24 hours notice, 20 riders showed up in Leavenworth, KS, Thursday morning at 9:30am. This would be my first funeral with the Patriot Guard. I had ridden in the 24th Marines Homecoming, but that was different. The visitation was the previous night, but I ... read more

When a fellow veteran in my HOG group said he wanted to do something for Veterans Day I was excited. Gary Palmer asked all the Vets to meet in the back of the room after the regular meeting was over. That was the start of something great. It soon worked into an event that would start at our local dealer then proceed to Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Yes the one known for the military prison. While in Ft. Leavenworth we would join the local VFW group riders for the big Veterans Day Parade downtown, tour the National Cemetery and eat at a Mexican restaurant before coming home. Veterans Day morning was COLD. When the Saturday morning news said it was 32 degrees outside, I found it hard to get out of bed and think about riding in ... read more

April 3 - 17, 2006 Cortez, Colo. - Leavenworth, Kan. Mile 5,375 1,541 Miles this Leg We are now balanced at the easternmost edge of Kansas, more than halfway across the continent from the coast we started on (see Route Map). Since leaving Port Townsend on Feb. 9, we have traveled more than 5,000 miles in nine weeks. Yet we have used up just a quarter of the time allotted for this road trip, and—one might hope—just a quarter of the adventures! This blog entry recounts our time in the Four Corners region of the Southwest, as well as our arrival in America’s Midwest. Which brings us to the unseasonable seasons… In our recent travels through northern New Mexico, spring was properly in force (albeit with less-than-usual rainfall), but we got a good dose of “winter” ... read more
