Since I’m doing more on this trip than just college football, I’m dividing it into two parts. The first will be all about the football gameday experience (and getting there). The second part will talk about all the stuff I did on my way back home, since I had a couple of days to be a tourist before I had to be back home. So let me say that Notre Dame has been a favorite of mine for as long as I’ve been following college football. I know people say they’re always overrated, and in the past few years in the world of UGA fanhood, it’s become the norm to trash-talk Notre Dame. We did beat them both times in the past three years, so the trash-talk is warranted, on some level. But when it comes ... read more

Today was still another moving day. We put a lot of miles on, but we had good weather, so that was a plus. We left the hotel at 7:25 AM and 66 degrees and pointed the car east on I-90. We drove through four states today, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. We drove beside Lake Michigan. We crossed the Mississippi River again today at the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin, where it flows into Lake Onalaska, and this will be the last time for a while. And we also crossed a couple of other rivers, the Wisconsin River, the Chicago River. We drove through more farm land, more corn fields, where the plants have begun to bloom and are leaving a yellow haze across the fields, and some very industrial areas, like Gary, IN. I have ... read more

Geo: 41.6791, -86.254We are on our way home. We are sad to be done but happy to be going home. We also miss our doggies. We stopped for lunch at the University of Notre Dame (a little school spirit). I love the campus. One of my kids should go there. It's so nice. We had lunch at an Irish Pub just off campus and took a walk on campus to see the stadium, touchdown Jesus and on the way to the grotto, the church bells started ringing for 5 PM mass (we had a very late lunch). We decided to go to mass and not have to wake up early tomorrow. Plus, I like to go to mass in different places and this is a big beautiful church. Matthew was not happy but he'll thank me ... read more

We crossed the Mississippi river today - our arbitrary marker for delineating the eastern US from the western US. It just feels different, almost instantly - more cars, more people, more buildings, more...everything. Goodbye wide open spaces. Goodbye starry skies. Goodbye quiet nights, campfires, mountain overlooks and wildlife. We are almost home. Uncle Brian showed off his parenting skills by having all the kids up, dressed and fed and our load of laundry (due to an unexpected shampoo spill in our overnight bag) folded by the time we arrived at 7:10 am. After saying our farewells, we took off for Chicago's Wrigley Field, racing the clock to make a 1:20 pm game (not 2:00 as we originally thought). We almost made it, but of course got waylaid once we arrived in decking everyone out in Cubs ... read more

Brett and Megan came up for the weekend and the whole family made the trip to South Bend to enjoy the day at Notre Dame and see the football game. I had been to South Bend before for my cousin Kevin's wedding at the Notre Dame chapel, but other than the chapel and the grotto, I hadn't seen much of campus. I couldn't wait to see the excitement that a game day brought to campus! It was really cool walking all around, seeing touchdown Jesus, the marching band, the grotto and chapel. We got to see the players coming out of the chapel, where they pray before every game. Tons of people are waiting outside to cheer them on. It was freezing cold and raining during the game, but it was still cool! ... read more

As the moon rises on adventurous day 2, we shall remember this day as the day of friends, both old and new. We were lucky enough for an old pal, Deanna, to come back into our lives and join us in Millennium Park, Chicago for a delicious dinner and drinks. Our new friend, well that’s a whole story in itself…we were just exploring all that Indiana has to offer (corn and basketball goals on the side of barns and more corn) when we arrived at the Sun Aurora Resort. Along the dirt road, leading to the resort, several questionable characters were exiting the premises, but we continued forward. We passed a junk yard and cautiously approached a thick fence with a sign reading “Private Members Only- Inquiries Welcome.” Being the curious girls we are, we ... read more

We made our first fun stop to appease Diana's football fanaticism. We took some pictures of the stadium and golden dome and only took one wrong turn. Notre Dame is also now the location of Gimli's first speed bump encounter and Uhaul U-turn (both resounding successes). The worst part of our visit was the stuborn toll machine on the way in. We now have $6 in change, at least they are dollar coins (Wendell!). ... read more

Hi! I am almost ready to go! I leave on Sunday and after a long-----long flight I will be in beautiful Sydney, Australia... which seems pretty unreal to me right now. I know that I will miss my friends so much and IU and little 5 :( but I am sure this trip will be amazing! I am rather nervous because I have never flown by myself or have lived in another country. Also, I do not know anyone when I get there. I am sure this will be a journey that will help me grow a lot as a person. I guess we will see :)... read more
