A number of you have asked me for some additional information on how to search for further information regarding the teaching of English at Taizhou Normal College in Jiangsu Province, China. Please take a few minutes and take a look at the College's Website: http://www.tzsz.net or contact Mr. Arthur Lee of the International Exchanges and Cooperation Department: arthurlee65@yahoo.com.cn The school's Website contains great information, photos of the campus, and other relevant statistics. Thought I would continue my previous entry about my visit to China this past summer. No doubt, there are some of you who might consider a similar adventure, preparing to teach in China after retirement, and I would like to give as much encouragement as possible. I have heard from individuals, who are presently involved in teaching English in various places in China, and I have great appreciation for all of the commentary. Please keep the many comments coming, and feel free to quiz me on any of your thoughts and concerns. ..... My first day in China was filled with sights and sounds and smells that will never leave. The streets I travelled were not the China of Beijing or Shangai nor Hong Kong, but it was a "smaller" city of about 5 million, ... read more

Having visited China in July of 2005, I am giving thought to some of the challenges that will face me as I prepare the journey. No book I have read about China, nor any conversations I have had with Chinese Nationals in Miami prepared me for that first visit. Perception will never equate to the reality surrounding a foreigner on first arrival. I was not attached to any tour group, but made a personal visit and so was given the opportunity of a very personal experience. There was no set schedule, only the one agreed to by Mr. Lee and myself. I arrived at night, via NW Airlines, in Shanghai. Mr. Lee met me with a van and its driver, but I was exhausted from the trip, Miami-Detroit-Tokyo-Shanghai. Mr. Lee and I have had many ... read more

2006 has officially arrived in Miami, Florida. As always, the weather is sunny and warm, perfect for the many tourists from around the world, all recovering from a strenuous night. But for me it is the official beginning of my travel and work plans to China. Within a few weeks I have to make the deposit for the Freighter ANL GEORGIA, where a few cabins are available for passenger-travel from the East Coast of the US via Panama Canal to Hong Kong, China. Because my teaching contract is for a year, I will now have to make visa arrangements with the China Cosulate in Houston, Tex. for the "extended" visa and present my teaching contract and letter of invitation from the Taizhou Normal College. A China- Visa-Agency in Ft. Lauderdale has notified me that some ... read more

Days 44 & 45 Another horrid early morning (but we were happy to get up and get out of the pit they call Lima) we headed to the airport to catch our flight. We tried to be proper travellers and use the buses but got half way and were lost so we shared a taxi with some strange old woman (which turned out good for us as she paid for most of it!!). We got to the hostel mid-afternoon and went for a wander. We really liked it there, Ocean Drive was really cool with loads of restaurants and bars lining the road. The only bad thing was it was full of Americans!! Had a lovely dinner on Ocean Drive then went shopping. Had a pretty early night or at least tried to as the other ... read more

Hi everyone! I currently have been trying to get to Jamaica for 33 hours. We left Boston Logan International 3 hours late due to Mechanical problems, and missed our connecting flight to Kingston. This has caused us a couple of problems, because Hurricane Rita is currently reeking havoc on the Florida Keys and will soon be a category 4 hurricane by the time it hits either the LA or TX area. We have been booked on 4 different flights to Kingston, all of which have either been missed or cancelled. American Airlines has thankfully provided us a hotel room for last night and tonight. They have also given us some meal vouchers that pay for the majority of our meals. We are going to try to get on an AirJamaica flight tomorrow morning. If this ... read more

Yes. As Nancy mentioned, we are currently stranded in the windy, rainy, flightless city of Miami, where we've spent the last two days mostly sprawled out on airport floors, talking with various tourists in various lounge areas. This whole ordeal has been incredibly draining, not only for the psyche, but for the body and the wallet, as well. The airline has been nice enough to provide us with housing and food vouchers, but they unfortunately cannot provide a change of clothes - thus, Nancy and I have been sporting the same outfits for three days now. I'm not going to lie - my shirt is pretty rank at this point. Thankfully, we've concocted a plan for tomorrow morning: having stolen red fleece blankets from our Boston flight, said blankets will make a lovely wrap-around skirt. You ... read more
