Dear All Greetings from back in London! On a Sunday morning I arrived back at Heathrow Airport after what turned out to be an incredible two-week journey around the US state of Florida. I enjoyed it immensely, and arrived back with the darkest tan I think I’ve ever had – they don’t call it the sunshine state for nothing! I spent my last two nights on this journey in the amazing city of Miami, and will relate my time there in this final blog entry of my trip. I believe last time I wrote, I had just dropped off my rental car at Fort Lauderdale Airport, and was actually sad to see it go. Out of three car hires I’ve done in my travels, it certainly was the swishest and the coolest! As I took my ... read more

We are in warm and breezy Miami. I love it! Our day started at 3am when we left for the Springfield airport. I slept while Kamie drove. We flew from Springfield to Charlotte then on to Miami on American Airlines. This was our first stop through the Charlotte airport and I was surprised at the enormity of this airport. Charlotte is apparently the American Airlines hub. A hub is basically where all AA planes go… so if you fly AA, more than likely, you will have a layover in Charlotte to get you from Point A to Point B. Delta’s hub is Atlanta and United’s hub is San Francisco. Southwest doesn’t have a hub which is why they got into all that trouble last year and thousands of flights were abandoned for days. There’s your flight ... read more

Miami is cool. We figured that out the first time we were here, back at the end of 2019 & beginning of 2020. We were in Miami for New Years, which is also our anniversary. We saw Pitbull perform a free concert in the park, found a late-night Afrobeats party, exercised at South Beach's outdoor workout park, and spent a day driving south to Key West. On that trip, we figured out what we were about around here. Everybody talks about Miami Beach, but our favorite spot was actually Wynwood. This time, we were here for an overnight layover due to one of our previous flight's being canceled and forcing us to miss our connection (thanks American Airlines!). We got into the airport around 8:30pm, spoke to the ticketing desk to confirm our hotel booking (care ... read more

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but Miami in June is hot. I’ve spent most of my life in the South, but I had always heard of the cool breezes and daily rain showers that kept Miami from being a sweatbox. Perhaps I just had a different idea of a sweatbox. Either way, I was always glad when I could find air conditioning. It took me 6 months to be able to do anything touristy in 2021, but now that summer has arrived, I’m looking forward to spending more time getting out and about. And yes, I am fully vaccinated, so barring some new variant (I’m looking at you, delta) or preventative measures, I’m going to be doing more traveling and writing in the next couple of months. Most of my faithful readers will ... read more

9 – 14 March 2019 Pax Guest House, Mount St. Benedict, Trinidad. A theme this trip has been constant contrast and it continued when we moved to Pax. We left the chaos, congestion and general bustle of Couva for the peace on Mount St. Benedict. This was a stop recommended by friends Paul & Sheila who stayed here a short while ago. The Mount is a hill bordering the rainforest with a view down across the plain. In 1912 permission was given to build a church, monastery, convent and guest house at the top and the complex became an important centre for the Catholic Church in Trinidad. It is a good location as all the main birding sites on the island are within reach and they have a very good guide working with the guest house. ... read more

On Thursday morning, after a sound night's sleep, we awoke about 7am and went for breakfast at 7-40am. It was a grey overcast day but still warm. Once we had eaten we hit the road to return to Miami Airport to drop off the car. The roads were very quiet and as we filled up with petrol I realised it was Thanksgiving so noone was heading to work or school thus it would be an easy trip into Miami. It was such an easy drive that we made it to the car rental return before 10am. It was simple to find the right road and drop the car off. All the rental companies have shuttle buses to take customers straight to the port so we found the one owned by Dollar and were soon having exclusive use ... read more

We are in the Miami Airport waiting for our plane. Kamie is literally snoring next to me. I’m drinking Starbucks so I’m wide awake. We were up at 5:30am this morning which is 4:30am Missouri time. We were in the first group off the ship. We Ubered to the Miami airport. We have a very long layover in Atlanta airport today so we won’t be in Memphis until around 5:30pm tonight. I suspect I will be driving home and all will go well. Kamie’s new car is the smoothest ride I’ve ever experienced…. makes driving in out of Memphis traffic seem like a trip to Ramey’s…. it feels like it glides. Update: Kamie took over in Jonesboro and we didn’t get home until around 11pm and let’s just say his driving made me yell at him ... read more

Today we got on the ship. The End. Just kidding. It was uneventful, however. Breakfast on the hotel’s dime at a small restaurant next door was good. Check-in was easy in Miami and rather quick. The “problem” with today was our boarding time was early (11am) so we were onboard before 11:30am and they were refueling so the entire ship was non-smoking until almost 1:30pm/2pm. Kamie was not a happy camper. Actually, later we learned he could have been inside smoking in the casino but neither of us thought about the casino since it is the only indoor smoking area on the ship. We had beautiful views of Miami leaving the port. Our ship actually turned-around in the small harbor to leave the port! Never seen a ship do that before. We got fantastic views of ... read more

Kamie woke me at 4:05am this morning with an upset stomach. Did I pack anything? Yes, I did. ? Suppose his Dave & Busters beer-battered fries didn’t set well? He should’ve had the quesadilla… (like me and other Rockstars). We were back to sleep in a couple of minutes…. then the alarm beeped at 4:45am. We had an easy drive on 240 to the Memphis airport. This was our first time flying out of this airport, but it was fairly simple to navigate and was not busy with traffic this morning. Kamie was wearing a hat he purchased in Cabo San Lucas a few years back. He looked like a redneck going to drink lots of beer on an island to me. Strange enough, his hat was very popular with the ladies this morning. He received ... read more

Build day #2! This morning we were able to enjoy sleeping in until 7:30 so I slept in my build clothes, ate some burnt peanut butter toast, drank some iced coffee, and tossed a frisbee before loading up the vans to head to the build site for the day. After sitting in some traffic in Miami (yep this place even has traffic at 9am on a Saturday ?) we made it up to near Fort Lauderdale for our build. It’s was a rainy, wet morning, but what else is new?! ??‍♀️“ K2C—we like to get wet!” We helped clean up some debris where a foundation is about to be laid—think moving large stomps, branches, raking sticks, and moving dirt-turned-mud in a trailer. When the waste was carried away, we found out that it weighed 10,000 pounds ... read more
