For 2022, the world is a much different place now. We have a war between Russia and the Ukraine, record-setting inflation, greater awareness of climate change, and contentious politics here at home. Thanksgiving this year, in my opinion, gives us a chance to be thankful for our wonderful lives, free of war mostly, and now, post Covid (I hope), a bit more normalcy in the world. A Thanksgiving meal is going to cost much more this year. The cost has increased 26%, from $52.59 to $66.39. Since most of our holiday meals will last for several days, the cost per meal becomes a bit more realistic. I enjoy leftover turkey, as well as some of the dishes listed below. My two favorites, beside another dinner, are turkey curry soup with vegetables, and turkey enchilada casserole. Very ... read more

After nearly two and a half years of the Australian Governments border closures, we were at last able to head to Los Angeles and see our daughter. Having been to Palm Springs before, I was keen to again head uo on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and visit the Mount San Jacinto State Park. Previously, I had been up on the Tramay and visited the Mount San Jacinto State Park at Christmas time and with the elevation gain, it was very cold. This time, in mid June, at the Tramway starting point, the temperature was about 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degress Celcius. At the top, the temperature dropped to 66 degrees Fahrenheit or a very comfortable 19 degres Celcius. The tramway takes about 11 minutes to make the trip up to an elevation of 8,516 ... read more

Having traveled a bit during the pandemic, the highly touted United Polaris Lounge has not been available in Chicago, Europe, or SFO. But now, post pandemic, the Polaris Lounges are open for business. I plan to use the one at SFO, though I am flying on Turkish Airlines. From James Dozer at Travel Codex: THE UNITED POLARIS LOUNGE IS THE BEST BUSINESS CLASS LOUNGE IN THE ENTIRE STAR ALLIANCE NETWORK. My favorite lounge used to be the Star Alliance Lounge at LAX but this Polaris Lounge blows everything else out of the water. The lounge is spacious, beautifully decorated and offers passengers a host of wonderful pre-flight amenities. The United Polaris Lounge San Francisco is located in the G concourse of the international terminal (closest to gate G92) and is only open to Star Alliance premium ... read more

Woke up around 6.30am and had a peak outside and we had already docked in Long Beach. We had to be out of the cabin by 8.30 so off to breakfast we go. Kerry went to the buffet and I had a couple of the special Mexican dishes which are just amazing and I would love to have these back home where it could be a genuine rival to the good old bacon and egg roll. This time I had my eggs over medium which is the way to go to avoid having eggs oozing out over my fingers ! I had some time to take a couple of photos and explored the upper decks around the waterslide and found a quiet private adults area called Serenity on deck 15 which had a couple of jacuzzis ... read more

On the eve of the 2022 World Series: From 2008: Fall is a great time of the year for sports fans. College and pro football are the big draws. But it is also time for the Fall Classic, the Major League Baseball World Series, a uniquely American event that has no equal in the world. As a kid, the games were rarely on television, and certainly not in prime time. I was fortunate to get to attend several World Series over the years. In the 1970's, I lived and worked in the City of Alameda. Many of the Oakland Athletics players came into the pharmacy where I worked. The most frequent customer was Dagoberto "Campy" Campaneris, the shortstop of the 3 times world champions in 1972-1973-1974. He came in about weekly and gave game tickets to ... read more

It was a quiet night and we slept pretty well although the air conditioning was a bit annoying. We have had it on heating mode for the last couple of weeks and generally set it around 72 degrees (22 in Celsius) and often we just turn it off before going to bed so we don’t have the annoying on / off cycle happening throughout the night but here in LA the room we were in was set to cooling mode and it got really stuffy as soon as you turned it off so we had to leave it on all night. We had a lay in to let Kerry get some extra shut eye and went down for breakfast around 9.00 am and I decided to make my own waffle for the very first time (they ... read more

Well according to the Stepz App on my phone we have walked 62 km over the last 4 days around NYC so that is a new record. We were collected from our driver who was right on time and we headed to JFK airport for our flight to Los Angeles. The drive took about 45 minutes which is what we expected. We are flying with American Airlines today and arrived approximately at 8.45am and had a bit more than 2 hours until our scheduled departure time. Checking in our luggage was simple and we were through the security checkpoint quite quickly and we were at our gate by 9.30am and we have not experienced any of the delays here you keep hearing about on the news at airports. Just after we boarded there was a lady ... read more

The Arrhenius equation, states that for every 10-degree Celsius increase, the reaction rate doubles. What makes coffee special is its volatiles or the chemicals that produce its distinct aroma. Likewise, the reaction rate halves for every 10-degree Celsius decrease, so keeping coffee cooler will preserve the smell. There’s a right way and a wrong way to store java in the freezer. The best practice would be to keep beans in an airtight container like a Tupperware or Mason jar to keep moisture out. Brianne Linne, a researcher, also recommends batching out the beans and checking each portion individually to ensure it’s completely thawed before use. Pre-ground coffee, Linne says, is extremely dry. Dry things want to absorb moisture, so improperly storing ground coffee in the url=https://www.inverse.com/scien... read more

From Fodor's: For the past two years, disruptive passengers have been a nightmare to deal with. In May, when we conducted Fodor’s Summer Travel Survey, 60% people said they were worried about an encounter with an unruly passenger. The number of incidents have come down since, but drunk and disruptive passengers continue to annoy American fliers. And that does not count delayed and cancelled flights, lost luggage, and indifferent service. The Vacationer conducted an online survey of 1,098 American adults 18 years and older. They were asked, “When flying on a plane, which behaviors from fellow passengers annoy you?” There were frankly no surprises in the responses. The top two most annoying behaviors were tied: disr... read more

For those of you counting, the city of Los Angeles covers 503 square miles and Los Angeles County is 4,752 square miles big. See? HUGE. It’s the second most populous city in the US – a little less than half that of New York City. The map just totally blows me away! In addition, LA has 75 miles of coastline. Almost 4 million people. About 36% of residents were born outside of our country. When I was working, Los Angeles was a nightmare. I even shared an apartment and a car lease with the President of the company, because one of us was in LA so often. And it seems like, no matter where you are, everything is an hour away!! So, you New Yorkers complain about having to go from Central Park West to Chelsea?? ... read more
