On Monday, I was suddenly presented with an opportunity to spend time with Y during the week. What’s a better way to spend it than to go camping? Things might be hectic without V but don’t worry about it, just do it! I searched for the most coveted campsites in the area. This is a rare opportunity to snag a weekday spot! Half moon bay was out solid except for a few RV sites but New Brighton Beach was a go for Wednesday night! That is just a 40-minute drive and that place is always heavily booked 6 months ahead. So excited!! Wednesday morning, we hit the road at 9:20 am. We weren’t particularly in a hurry since the campsite check-in wasn’t until 2 pm. By the time we got to Santa Cruz, it was past ... read more

We started our day with a breakfast stop at a roadside day use area in Nevada in Walker Canyon. After breakfast we headed for Bodie Historic Park, and then on to Mono Lake, ending our day with the June Lake Loop in Mammoth. Actually, from the time I first set foot on the UC Berkeley campus as a sophomore in high school, I fell in love with the UC Berkeley campus. It became both my dream and a goal through my high school years to matriculate to Berkeley. The day I received the letter in the mail, during my senior year of high school was one of the happiest days of my young life. Most people here in the Valley consider me to be a Berkeley liberal. I just consider myself a liberal, though I think I became that way in high school, thanks to friends like Mario Olmos and Bob Osganian. But here are some unique only in Berkeley quirkiness: THE NOBEL IS THE WORLD’S most prestigious award for academic, cultural, and scientific advances. A Nobel Laureate will, ... read more

Has it really been about five years since I trudged up to Memorial Stadium in Berkeley for a Cal football game? Have I given up the notion that my Golden Bears will play in the Rose Bowl on January 1st one of these years, while I am still alive? We have not been to the Rose Bowl since January 1, 1959. We played the heavily favored Iowa Hawkeyes of the Big 10 and lost 38 to 12. But we were the 16th ranked team in the country. Joe Kapp was the star QB for the Bears. He later became the Head Coach. Believe it or not, I was in Pasadena on that fateful day in 1959. Our family was visiting relatives who lived within earshot of the Rose Bowl. I could hear the PA announcer and ... read more

Day 1 of our next adventure to the USA. This trip was planned in 2020 but was delayed a little for some reason ! Kerry & I will be away for 7 weeks this time with the primary goal ticking off the final 6 states so we can achieve the target of visiting all 50 states in the USA. Well we picked up the Kia Stonic (small SUV) rental car from Hertz and left home @ 5.20pm for the drive to Brisbane Airport and topped up with $10- gas (might as well start using the yankee language now I guess) and experienced the stupid parking entry at the Shell Petrol Station near the airport again ! The Stonic is a bit gutless to drive but did the job for 1.5 hour journey from home. Easy drop ... read more
