Geo: 37.7467, -119.584Yosemite National Park may be the most beautiful park in the US. We drove about 20 miles from Lee Vining into the park. We stayed at the Tuolumne Meadows Campground (elevation 8000 feet). We spent most of the day hiking various trails, including the Lembert Dome that was over 9000 feet high. Yosemite has a great shuttle service that runs a loop all day, but it does not go as far as Yosemite Valley. That is 16 miles as the crow flys, but 56 miles to drive......lots of winding roads.... read more

We returned to Nicely's restaurant up the street from our hotel for breakfast, they opened at 7am so we were on the doorstep at 7.05 am ( didn't want to appear too eager!) in order to get breakfast and on the road as early as possible. The service was great and by 7.25 am we had the car loaded and were on our way. Yosemite - here we come! I've been waiting for this day for so long! Within minutes of setting off we were on Tioga Pass, the main pass that leads to the Park and through it. The Pass twisted and turned it's way up the mountain climbing higher and higher, with each turn the scenery just kept getting better and better. There were lots of places to pull over and take a good ... read more

Another month, another adventure! This time, a little more local- I stayed within the same state! But California is a large state, so it was still a solid 8-hour drive from Carlsbad up to Yosemite National Park. On Friday afternoon, my friend Grant and I loaded up his car with food and gear and set out on a road trip. We made the long haul through all the LA traffic and cruised north until we hit mountains and endless stars. We arrived very late (I guess technically very early the next day), so we parked on the side of the road and created a make shift sleeping space in the trunk. We were up with the sun the next morning, despite only a few hours rest. We cruised into Yosemite National Park and wound our way ... read more

This was another day of straightforward driving. I wanted to get to Bishop, CA in time to see Galen Rowell’s gallery, ‘Mountain Light’. It wasn’t a difficult or long drive and I arrived in Bishop at 2:30pm with lots of time for visiting the gallery. On the way I traversed Yosemite Park on Hwy 120 which is called The Tioga Highway because it goes over the Tioga Pass. That was a neat road to drive and would have been a lot of fun on a motorcycle for sure. There weren’t too many cars and the road surface was in perfect shape. The road climbs out of Yosemite Valley on a steep hill, through tunnels and switchbacks, rising to around 10,000 feet at the pass. The car had to work pretty hard all the way as evidenced ... read more

Before I start my tale of the day, I want to ensure you know that this blog service doesn’t necessarily show all my images in the body of the blog. Often some of the images are further down, below the advertising, at the end of the writing. I don’t like this and will probably not use this service again in the future, but will keep using it on this trip for convenience. —————————————————————— Yosemite Valley is a marvellous sight. Every direction you look there is a view that is unique, not only in the valley, but, to my knowledge, unique to anywhere else in the world. If you haven’t been to Yosemite and walked some of the valley trails, I think you should put it on your bucket list. You won’t be sorry. After two false ... read more

The plan was to walk to Sentinel Dome, but snow and ice overnight meant they had closed the Glacier Point Road - bummer! So instead after some advice from a ranger, we decided to hike the Mirror Lake Loop. It was supposed to be 2 hours, but in true Gary fashion we turned it into a 4 hour hike. Still, it was amazing...you just never get sick of craning your neck to see how high the surrounding peaks are. Mirror Lake had some ripples on it, but was still incredibly clear. It is interesting that Americans come to NZ and wax lyrical about our views, when they have this on their back doorstep. In my view, as beautiful as anything in NZ. Thee was a heap of dung on the trail, at first we thought it ... read more

Most peoples' main association with Yosemite National Park seems to be that that's where Yogi the Bear came from. Not true: he came from Yellowstone National Park or to be more precise: "Jellystone". On the other hand what Yosemite does have is actual bears. When I think of Yosemite I think of the magnificent photos of Ansel Adams the famous American photographer of the mid-20th century whose black and white pictures taken around the park are hyper-real, textural and intense - of skies, forests and most especially giant granite cliffs, waterfalls, lakes and mountains. Maria Chiara and I had one evening, one day and one morning in the park and we had a wonderful experience. After a long drive coming from the south (where we had inevitably lingered slightly too long at a vineyard tasting) we ... read more

Geo: 37.8772, -119.727Today we started very early, I was at the lobby at 4.40 am for the free coffee to eat with my rolls/cake as there was no kettle or hot water facility in the hotel room. I also needed the wifi to book seat for my flight to New Zealand. I was pleased that I managed to get a window seat for my flight. Then we were off to Yosemite Park.I was at the back of the bus again with 3 free seats, perfect for me to rest or sleep. As we approached the Park, the landscape was very scenic with trees and rocks. It is stunning here and I just love the nature. Yosemite Park Yosemite Park is area of outstanding beauty and great wilderness. Yes, we did manage to get a glimpse of Yosemite. After hearing conflicting reports of road closures around the park, we decided to drive the 90 miles to find out for ourselves. Apparently, the government cannot close state roads, and there are a couple of state highways that go into the park. We were met at the entrance and were told that the road was for “thru” traffic only, no stopping, etc. Of course, people pulled off and took pictures, and some even left their cars to walk along paths. What we saw was magnificent. After a short drive we were met by another ranger in a car with flashing lights and were instructed to turn back. So although we couldn’t have lunch on the patio of the famous Ahwahnee Lodge and we didn’t get to ... read more

There had been a massive wildfire burning in and around Yosemite, which at the time was 80% contained, but had affected some routes and causing road closures. Unfortunately for us, the main road (Tioga Pass) that runs through the centre of Yosemite was closed due to the fire, which meant that our plans had to change a little, and most of the next day would be spending driving around the top of Yosemite to reach our next stop in a little town called Bishop. This meant that we only really had this one day to go into Yosemite Valley, so as Jamestown is about an hour away from Yosemite National Park, so we were up and ready by 7am so that we could get there nice and early and have a full day at the park. ... read more
